Rekha Gupta, senior leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and MLA of Shalimar Bagh have been announced as the new chief minister of Delhi. BJP sources confirmed her appointment after a legislative meeting. Gupta’s appointment marks the BJP’s power to return to Delhi after 27 years. Rekha Gupta is the fourth female chief minister of Delhi, behind only Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit and Atishi Marlena Singh, as well as the second BJP chief minister.

Election Victory

Gupta defeated AAP’s Bandana Kumari in the Shalimar Bagh constituency with 29,595 votes in the recent Delhi parliamentary elections. She won 68,200 votes in the 2025 Delhi Parliamentary Election. The BJP won 48 of 70 seats in parliamentary elections.

Early life and political career

Gupta began her political career in the early 1990s when she became Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of the Daulat Ram College of Delhi University. She was elected president of the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) in 1996-97. Gupta was a former member of the BJP and vice president of the State. She also served as secretary-general of the Governor of the State BJP Party of Delhi and was a member of the party’s state supervisor. She was elected to MCD from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007.

Oath and safety arrangements

Her swearing-in ceremony will be held on February 20 in Ramlila Maidan. The presence of senior BJP leaders may provide memorials for the ceremony. More than 25,000 security forces will be stationed in the central, northern and New Delhi area of ​​the city.

Gupta owns assets worth Rs 530 crore and liabilities of Rs 1.2 crore. She is famous for her grassroots work and organizational capabilities within the party. Her priority areas are community development, empowerment of women and educational reform.
