History of Paralympic wheelchair basketball
Wheelchair basketball has a long history. The sport was first played around 1946 by soldiers injured in World War II. The International Paralympic Committee states: “Wheelchair basketball first appeared in the United States around 1946, invented by soldiers injured in World War II. Most of them were previously able-bodied players who wanted to continue playing the sport. Simple adaptations and slight changes in the rules allowed wheelchair basketball to spread across the United States and eventually around the world.” The sport took over the Paralympics in 1960 and traces its roots back to the first official Paralympic Games held in Rome in 1960.
