Key Insights

  • Citizen-centric initiatives: Leading cities have taken steps to improve the overall quality of life by developing green spaces, hosting cultural events and providing social opportunities. Strategically, this is done to attract and retain talent, eliminate geographic disparities and ensure inclusivity.
  • North American cities fall in the rankings: Many US cities have fallen in the rankings over the past three years. Washington, DC, Denver, and Los Angeles each dropped 12 points, while New York City ranked relatively high among US cities at 34th1.
  • Asian cities rise: While European cities lead, Asian cities are also making progress. Singapore has consistently ranked high, now in fifth place. Other cities to watch include Beijing (13th), Taipei (16th), Seoul (17th), and Shanghai (19th).
  • Future challenges: Bruno Lanvin, president of the Smart Cities Observatory, said cities should develop plans to deal with issues such as health crises and climate change. Despite some initial concerns, the current challenge for AI is to make city management more human-centric.

Asian cities are improving their smart city rankings through strong digital infrastructure and high-speed connectivity. Instead, Asian cities focus on integrated urban planning, emphasizing liveability, public-private partnerships and citizen engagement through participatory governance, as well as social inclusion initiatives. Best practices in sustainable development include green technologies and climate adaptation planning. Another is regional cooperation – the ASEAN Smart Cities Network – which is facilitated by collective action and knowledge sharing. It aims to seek technological leverage to improve the quality of life while effectively addressing the challenges facing cities.

This means that this year’s ranking theme marks a huge growth curve for sustainable urban development and innovative governance models that emphasize citizen engagement and well-being. These smart cities are forming the backdrop against which global challenges are taking shape.
