10 Best MCU Memes Of 2024, Ranked

As 2024 comes to an end, it’s time to round up some of the absolute best memes from across social media that immortalized moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)
fandom. Memes have become one of the biggest love languages on the internet for fans to express their affinity and connection to shows, movies, franchises, actors, characters and so much more. And considering the popularity of the MCU, it naturally attracted a lot of attention from clever social media users who provided insightful takes that resonated with the rest of the fanbase.

In 2024, shows like Echo received lower ratings, with the new character failing to generate a lot of attention online. However, X-Men ’97 hit a nostalgic note for many, leading to plenty of engagement from fans. Following that success, Deadpool & Wolverine doubled down with a movie that delivered a love letter to the Marvel movies that came before the MCU, and Agatha All Along finished out the year on a huge high, creating one of the most visually stunning and unique stories from the MCU to date.

Billy Maximoff Has Mommy Issues

Momma’s Boy Billy

Agatha All Along saw several characters struggle with their perceptions of who they are. With witches whose powers had been lost for decades, and a boy who felt like he was living someone else’s life, the series spent a lot of time exploring identity and origins. However, eventually Billy Maximoff learned his true identity, and it still took a moment for him to settle with that new knowledge.

Would Deadpool & Wolverine’s original ending have been better?

Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy revealed that the MCU movie was originally set to reveal that Deadpool and Wolverine had survived the ending almost immediately. However, a note from Blake Lively led to more tension being added to the moment, with Paradox making a speech before the heroes arrived. I like the finished movie’s ending better, as the thought that one or both of the heroes might have really died made the moment they appeared safe and sound more epic and emotional.

After learning who his mother is, Billy still struggles to embrace the truth. And that inner turmoil, with Billy declaring he has a mother, led to this gem of a meme. Wanda struggled with the loss of her beloved children, and despite having made them through magic, she searched high and low for a way to bring them back. Agatha All Along now reveals that Billy actually survived, only to have him reject the mother who gave him life.

The Carousel Of Cameos In Deadpool & Wolverine

Endless Cameo Carousel

The Boys is a show that prides itself on its ability to parody the superhero genre and expose some of the weaker elements of this evolving part of cinema. However, sometimes the mainline superhero movies end up parroting aspects of the show in a hilarious twist of fate. This scene, which is used as the basis of the meme, draws hilarious parallels between The Boys and Deadpool & Wolverine due to the abundant use of cameos.

The movie had brilliant writing and a multiverse story that sets up all these cameos, but the comparison is hilarious all the same, and it’s one of the funniest memes of the year.

The thing is, Deadpool & Wolverine did a tremendous job at including dozens of cameos in a way that felt satisfying, but it did feel like a showreel of Marvel heroes and villains. The movie had brilliant writing and a multiverse story that sets up all these cameos, but the comparison is hilarious all the same, and it’s one of the funniest memes of the year. And it immediately feels like at least four of the cameos that appeared in Deadpool 3.

The MCU/DC Crossover We Always Dreamed Of

MCU/DC Crossover Dream

X-Men ’97 was an exceptional blast from the past as it revived the classic cartoon from the 1990s. The show is a faithful update, picking up from where the original series left off, and maturing alongside the audience who would have grown up since it aired, but there was some noticeable changes. Namely, updating the animation for a more modern audience, and being conscious of the way it presents female figures, Rogue appears to have had a reduction.

Obviously this is one small part of an animated cartoon, but the way the internet latched on to X-Men ’97 reducing Rogue’s derriere has been absolutely hilarious. And as a result, this meme, which sees the DC Universe and the MCU collide, is incredible in so many ways. Taking the popular template that came from Christian Bale’s Dark Knight, and applying it to the viral adjustment was inspired and stands up as one of the best from 2024.

It Was A Pretty Hot Scene TBF…

Steamy MCU Moment

There was serious consideration to leaving this section at enough said, but it’s worth expanding on the idea. So, Deadpool & Wolverine was one of the best movies from Marvel’s Phase 5, and it delivered on several fronts. Nostalgia, paying homage to older Marvel films, Deadpool’s growth from washed up hero to MCU All-Star are all incredible. But one element above any other made this movie what it is, and that was the heroes, Deadpool and Wolverine, finally appearing together on-screen.

This beautiful partnership between two of the most beloved heroes in film was outstanding, and it leaned into a lot of raunchy humor from Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool in particular.

And while there are plenty of scenes that rev the engine, the scene where Deadpool and Wolverine go all out in the car is on another level. The bitter rivalry, the underlying tension, and the non-stop comedy beats are spectacular and a huge win for the film overall.

Agatha All Along Is Speaking Straight To The Audience

Agatha’s Direct Address

There’s no doubt that Agatha All Along was an outstanding series that resonated with a huge fanbase despite some viewers coming in unsure of what to expect. The series had some lower expectations, due to the cast of smaller characters from the background of the MCU, but Agatha All Along fought for and earned its place. And along the way, it found a dedicated fanbase in the queer community.

Did Kathryn Hahn just tease that Agatha Harkness will not return to the MCU?

Kathryn Hahn recently spoke about her time in Agatha All Along. While the actress did tease that she would love to continue playing Agatha Harkness and does not know what the future holds, Hahn stated that she faced the MCU series as a “satisfying way to say goodbye to this incredible character.” Based on the success of the MCU series and how Agatha and Billy Maximoff have a new mission ahead of them, I’m convinced that we will see Agatha again, with Hahn’s comments simply being a worst-case scenario kind of thing.

While Disney and Marvel have been criticized in the past for their lack of representation, Agatha All Along featured a predominantly female cast, with several queer characters, and it did a lot to represent this community in the show. And with the title character, Agatha Harkness, being so bold and confident in her expression of her sexuality, it was a riot to see her interact with other characters and assert her identity.

A Dogpool Wants What A Dogpool Wants

Dogpool’s Crazy Cravings

Another brilliant use of a popular meme template, this time replacing the head of popular rapper/singer Drake, with the head of Dogpool. Deadpool & Wolverine explored the fractured relationship between Wade and Vanessa, but a much more potent love story from the film was between Deadpool and Dogpool. These two sparked up an instant connection that could not be denied, and this meme does a great job of showcasing the drama.

Dogpool was actually the pet of the Deadpool variant, Nicepool, and he adored the puppy whom he was always close behind. However, Dogpool appears to have taken an immediate interest in the original Deadpool, and runs into his arms at every opportunity. While Deadpool initially has to begrudgingly return the pup, the pair eventually find eachother, and their relationship endures.

No Explanation Needed Agatha, We Get It

Agatha’s Obvious Point

Returning to Agatha All Along for a moment, the huge reveal about Aubrey Plaza’s character was an iconic moment. Rio Vidal was none other than the reaper herself, Death. The visuals at that moment were incredible, and seeing the face of Death was a moment that has major implications for the future of the MCU. However, it was also a moment that cleared up some details about Agatha Harkness and her mysterious past.

Agatha is shown from early in the series to have had a former romance with Rio, but when Rio’s true identity is exposed, it could raise eyebrows about her deeply questionable choices. The thing is, Aubrey Plaza absolutely killed it in this role, and it may be possible that she has never looked better or appeared as more of a seductress. Agatha caught feelings for obvious reasons, and that was also an experience the majority of the audience got to live first hand.

This Meme Made The Rounds Among Disappointed Fans

Fan Disappointment Meme

For context on the earlier meme regarding Rogue’s rotund rear end, this is one of the memes that really gave that moment life. Wolverine from the classic superhero cartoons has become a viral meme, but seeing him pining over what was lost in this context is another level of inception memery for the cartoon. Yes, there are obvious elements of this kids’ cartoon that are problematic and likely unhealthy, but it’s odd that when the cartoon grew up, the assets disappeared.

For the most part, the fanbase engaging with this moment understand the approach is intended with levity and good humor, but one design was also clearly more comic book accurate than the other. This template with Wolverine lying on the bed also grew in popularity thanks to several more popular figures picking it up and running with it. Starting with the man who tackled the role in live-action.

Hugh Jackaman Got Involved And Recreated The Meme!

Hugh’s Meme Recreation

Hugh Jackman is an extraordinary talent who has delivered astonishing performances in musicals, live theater, film, and so much more, but Hugh Jackman’s biggest and most enduring role has to be the actor’s performance as Wolverine. The actor may be from Down Under, but there is no denying he has become a national treasure thanks to his contributions in Hollywood down through the decades. And his latest and greatest success in 2024 has to be his landmark return to the role of Wolverine for Deadpool & Wolverine.

In the classic yellow and blue suit, he recreated the meme, and used it to declare Deadpool & Wolverine’s success to spectacular effect

After the film’s incredible success and a record-breaking run at the box office that made the movie number one in a variety of ways, including the highest grossing R-rated film of all-time and the most popular film for several weeks straight, Jackman paid tribute to the film’s success with this absolute beauty. In the classic yellow and blue suit, he recreated the meme, and used it to declare Deadpool & Wolverine’s success to spectacular effect. Well done Hugh!

Ryan Reynolds And Deadpool Are Definitely The Same Person At This Point

Reynolds & Deadpool: One Soul

But of course, did Hugh Jackman really even post on social media if Ryan Reynolds isn’t lurking somewhere close by? The pair have a very public friendship which is frequently publicly displayed through social media exchanges between the pair, affectionately poking fun at one another. And on this occasion, it’s exactly the same.

Ryan Reynolds decided to siphon off some of Hugh Jackman’s attention for his own socials when he suited up in the skin-tight red suit and lovingly stared at, (and stroked?) the picture from Hugh’s Instagram. Deadpool’s appreciation for his co-star, Ryan’s overt yearning and pleasure at seeing this meme brought to life, and the collective joy experienced by everyone who saw it makes this the clear winner of the best meme of the MCU of 2024.

Summary

The monolithic franchise that kicked off with Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is one of the industry’s longest-running and largest cinematic franchises. Based on the heroes from Marvel Comics, the MCU is a new way for fans and newcomers alike to enjoy the ever-expanding universes of some of the world’s most famous superheroes. Releasing as “Phases,” Marvel Studio’s first three Phases came to be known as “The Infinity Saga,” which surrounded the formation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and their showdown with the Mad Titan known as Thanos as he sought to collect the Infinity Stones. With his ultimate goal of indiscriminately wiping out half of all life in the universe, this plot ultimately reveals itself over ten years of films, ending in a two-part finale that changed the world’s fate – and the core cast forever. Currently, the MCU is preparing to enter the fifth phase, focusing on Kang the Conquerer as the new core series villain.
