The villains of the Marvel Cinematic Universe deserve more credit for their post-Endgame efforts, especially when it comes to dialogue. It would be an understatement to say that the MCU after Avengers: Endgame has been divisive, no longer enjoying the same ubiquity in quality many fans had come to expect. For all the faults that the last two phases of the franchise have endured, one area the series continues improving on is the dialogue of the villains.

Many of the most iconic villainous lines from the MCU come from characters like Loki or Thanos, who have had storied histories in the series up to this point. But many MCU films after Avengers: Endgame have only improved on the series’ track record with villains, introducing compelling new antagonists like Namor or Cassandra Nova. From Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to Spider-Man: No Way Home, the more recent MCU movies have added some deliciously evil and thought-provoking quotes on the bad guys’ behalf.

“There Is No God! That’s Why I Stepped In!”
The High Evolutionary, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s High Evolutionary, the Marvel Cinematic Universe created perhaps one of its most despicable and fun-to-hate villains ever. A megalomaniacal genius, The High Evolutionary created many alien species in the MCU, including the cybernetic experiments on animals that resulted in the birth of Rocket Raccoon. As the Guardians meddle in The High Evolutionary’s plans in an attempt to save Rocket’s life, he slowly reveals just how deep his God complex truly runs.
When one of his assistants frustrates him, The High Evolutionary jumps on the word “God” being used in a sentence, claiming that he is the only God that matters. It’s easy to see how these delusions of grandeur might come to him, considering how he’s created entire civilizations. Nevertheless, the line is delivered with a shaking vitriol that’s impossible not to enjoy, even if it is an utterly abhorrent thought.

“Are You Gonna Be Noble, Like Your Brother? Or Take Care Of Business?”
Killmonger, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Compared to the traditional ways of the rest of her nation, Shuri is something of a skeptic, putting her faith in technology rather than ancient rituals. Despite this, it’s easy to sense the hopefulness she feels when she eats the heart-shaped herb, clearly hoping to meet her late father, mother, or brother in the Ancestral Plane. Chillingly, she instead awakes there to find her cousin, Erik Killmonger, staring back at her.
Killmonger’s presence in Shuri’s vision is a great indication of just how much revenge has twisted her mind, now closer in ideology to the violent Killmonger than her close family. He stunningly demonstrates this with a goosebumps-forming line that asks Shuri what kind of Black Panther she’s going to be. Her silence is all the answer Killmonger needs, having successfully spread his evil influence even beyond the grave.

“You Said You Wanted To Burn The World. Let’s Burn It Together.”
Namor, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Killmonger isn’t the only villain in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to tempt Shuri into giving into her worst angry impulses. Despite being behind the murder of Shuri’s mother, Queen Ramonda, Namor still tries to get Shuri on his side, relating to her as the ruler of a nation feared for its control of vibranium. Namor begs Shuri to join him on a crusade against the surface world, knowing that the combined military prowess of Wakanda and Talokan could easily bring the nations of the world to heel.
Abhorrently, Namor weaponizes Ramonda’s own words to Shuri, revealing that he was eavesdropping on them during their last conversation together. The emotional bomb is almost enough to convert Shuri to his side, empathizing with the pain of loss Namor has lived with and the blackened anger that comes with it.

“Gods Don’t Have To Choose! We Take.”
Green Goblin, Spider-Man: No Way Home
One of the most compelling scenes in Spider-Man: No Way Home is the moment Peter Parker’s Spider-Sense goes off non-stop in Happy’s apartment with all the villains gathered, though no obvious threat has presented itself. Eventually, the cause is revealed to be the Green Goblin’s takeover of Norman Osborn’s mind, taking a valuable opportunity to try to sway the other villains to his side. Rather than go to their home dimensions to accept their deaths, the Goblin prods the other Spider-Man villains to wreak havoc on Earth-616.
To make his point, he calls himself and the other antagonists “Gods”, laying out his ethos of might makes right by suggesting that they use their powers to take whatever they want. Willem Dafoe’s performance as the Green Goblin doesn’t miss a beat after over two decades, just as delightfully sly and insidious as ever. His quick follow-up line quelling Doc Ock’s protests is also pure gold, simply calling him a dog and telling him to be quiet.

“When You Can See Time The Way I Do, You Don’t Get To Close Your Eyes.”
Kang the Conqueror, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Kang the Conqueror has had an unfortunate time trying to become the next major overarching MCU villain to follow-up Thanos. Not only did Jonathan Majors’ tricky legal situation make his casting a precarious choice, but audiences simply didn’t react to Kang the same way they did to Thanos, inspiring the franchise to scrap him in favor of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. That being said, Kang was still easily the best part of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The film takes more time to explain why this variant of Kang in particular is so driven to conquest. Much like Thanos, Kang is a classic “big picture” villain, preferring the order of his rule to the chaotic crash of parallel timelines he’s constantly able to perceive. The explanation he offers Jante van Dyne is a clever way to succinctly sum up how and why his ambitions got him imprisoned in the Quantum Realm in the first place.

“I Can Finally Come Out Of The Shadows Using The Only Natural Resource That The World Has Too Much Of- Girls.”
General Dreykov, Black Widow

Even if he isn’t the most show-stopping or flashy villain, General Dreykov owns one of the coldest MCU villain quotes after Thanos’ death. Technically, Dreykov’s words echo out before this event, taking place in the prequel film Black Widow. After luring Natasha Romanoff back into the Red Room, Dreykov is able to activate her Winter-Soldier-style mind control, officially placing an Avenger under his command.
Dreykov takes the time in the victory to explain his preference for girls in the Black Widow program, calling them “the only natural resource that the world has too much of.” Whittling down the women he kidnapped to be little more than a resource for him to exploit presents General Dreykov as one of the most callous villains the MCU has ever known, even if his words are strangely affirming of how undervalued young girls can be the world over. At the very least, it’s an ominous quote that offers a lot to chew on.

“Either You Kill Me, Or I Kill You. Both Wonderful Options.”
Cassandra Nova, Deadpool & Wolverine
In truth, Cassandra Nova’s actual best line is one of Deadpool & Wolverine‘s most R-rated moments, involving brutal murder at an atomic level and an Enya box set. In terms of something that can actually be written about while maintaining some degree of class, her line to Deadpool upon being held hostage is a pretty close runner-up. With Juggernaut’s helmet preventing her psychic powers from working, Cassandra reveals she’s physically incapable of sending him home.
This presents quite a dilemma to the Merc with a Mouth, who Cassandra promises to kill the second the helmet is removed. Conversely, Cassandra realizes that her own life is at risk, something she’s more than seemed to make peace with. Lines like this and her weak confession of “I wish I knew” when Deadpool asks her why she’s “like this” both hint at a deep well of sadness and self-loathing lurking beneath the surface of the deranged mutant villain.

“I Have Eaten More Salt Than You Have Had Rice In Your Life!”
Xu Wenwu, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
After teasing him in Iron Man 3, the Marvel Cinematic Universe finally unleashed the real Mandarin with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. An immortal warlord, Xu Wenwu, a.k.a. The Mandarin, is one of the most fearsome and tyrannical despots the MCU’s history has ever known, having imbibed in multiple lifetimes of violence. He shows off his age and experience to his young son at one point, issuing a warning that translates oddly to direct English.
To say one has “Eaten more salt than you have had rice in your life” is actually a typical Chinese proverb. Beyond establishing the film’s cred as a realistic depiction of the culture, the line warns Shang-Chi of his relative lack of experience compared to his elder. More specifically, it’s a grave warning for the up-and-coming hero to beware of just how much experience in warfare and exercising his well Xu Wenwu truly has.

“Why Aren’t You Smiling?”
The Leader, Captain America: Brave New World
The most recently-released MCU film at the time of writing, Captain America: Brave New World added several new villains to the franchise’s roster at once. Despite The Leader’s controversial physical appearance, there’s no denying that Tim Blake Neslon excels as the smarmy supervillain. Case in point, he delivers a deliciously devilish line to Sam Wilson at the worst possible time, sending chills down the spine.
Silently watching and waiting, The Leader mockingly questions why Captain America’s instincts seem to be kicking in at a seemingly normal presidential function. Of course, this line leads into the amazing reveal that The Leader had meddled with President Ross’ very DNA, turning him into an unstoppable Red Hulk. It’s a shame that this transformation was spoiled in the film’s advertising, as the line would have helped make for a bombastic reveal to anyone not in the know.

“See, That Wasn’t So Hard!”
Mysterio, Spider-Man: Far From Home
The very first MCU movie after Avengers: Endgame was quick to prove that the franchise hadn’t lost its touch with villains after Thanos’ defeat. Enter Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio, an amazingly conniving manipulator who doubles as a perfect twist villain for those not familiar with the comics. At first appearing to be Peter Parker’s friend, he convinces the young hero to hand over the exhausting command of the E.D.I.T.H. glasses. Shockingly, the bar scene goes on as Peter walks away, satisfied with his decision.
As the surroundings of the bar gradually begin to fade away, Mysterio finally breaks character, practically corpsing as he giggles “See, that wasn’t so hard!” to his off-screen collaborators. Beyond being a phenomenal showcase of Jake Gyllenhaal’s acting skill, this line is a stellar way to both humanize Mysterio and mark him as the antagonist. The celebration that follows makes this line one of the most emotionally impactful in the entire MCU.
