Yelena Belova has gradually become one of the most beloved new characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks in no small part to her amazing dialogue. A definitive role from Florence Pugh, Yelena first showed up in the 2021 prequel Black Widow, the little sister to Natasha Romanoff’s titular assassin. She returned later that same year in the series Hawkeye, officially establishing herself as a fan-favorite among the newer characters of Phase 4.

Yelena’s Russian accent and bratty younger child sense of humor quickly endeared her to fans, adoring her believable chemistry with Black Widow and Kate Bishop. While many of her best moments are hilarious punchlines, Florence Pugh also knows when to let go of the levity to devastate audiences with emotional moments, making for some of Yelena’s best lines. It’s no wonder Yelena was chosen as the major perspective character among the cast of Thunderbolts*.

“It Was Real To Me, You Are My Mother!”
Black Widow
While Yelena might be primarily known for her cocky comedic timing, she certainly has had some great serious beats over the course of her MCU career. Perhaps the most touching of these happens in Black Widow, where Natasha, Melina, and Red Guardian admit to themselves that their family unit established by the state’s leadership was just a facade used to maintain their cover. This is distressing for Yelena to hear, causing her to almost break down in tears at the confession that it was real to her.
As the youngest of the group, Yelena was at a tender age when she was sent to America on an infiltration mission, genuinely believing Red Guardian, Natasha, and Melina to be her family to some degree. She may have been aware of their mission in America, but she also naively assumed her comrades felt the same way about their bond transcending the cover story. It’s brutal to watch Yelena realize the rest of her “family” didn’t see themselves as such so readily, and it’s easily one of the best moments of Yelena’s MCU journey.

“I Don’t Have Any Weapons On Me. Okay, I Take That Back, I Don’t Have Any Weapons Currently In My Hands. That’s A Lie Also.”
Hawkeye
Florence Pugh’s comedic timing while in control of Yelena Belova is second to none. Many of her best jokes come from her appearance in Hawkeye, which does a great job at establishing just how dangerous the average Black Widow is compared to the average person, or even the average superhero. In an attempt to dissuade Kate Bishop’s fears upon breaking into her apartment, Yelena tries to convince her she isn’t a threat.
However, this goes hilariously wrong when Yelena claims not to have any weapons on her, only to quickly and tacitly admit that she’s lying. She tries to clarify that she doesn’t currently have a weapon in her hand, only to look at her hands, still adorned with the classic Black Widow’s Bite wrist launchers, and realize that technically isn’t true either. From her adorably awkward quirks of speaking English to her little pauses as she realizes just how dangerous she is by default, this is one of Yelena’s most entertaining line reads.

“Kate, This Is Not Cutlery.”
Hawkeye
The best part of Yelena Belova and Kate Bishop’s interactions is just how much chemistry Hailee Steinfeld and Florence Pugh have. During her home invasion, Yelena persuades Kate to just have a simple conversation over a pot of boxed macaroni and cheese, seemingly excited to play the role of the older sister for once. Though she’s eventually able to persuade Kate to sit down with her, she’s quick to admonish her bachelorette pad’s lack of utensils.
Something about the way Yelena chides “Kate, this is not cutlery” while waggling Kate’s lone piece of silverware is comedic perfection. All the better that Hailee Steinfeld and Florence Pugh improvised much of this scene, including the small interaction of Yelena pouring hot sauce over her meal coming from the actress’ real-life love of the condiment, whereas Steinfeld is not a fan. The Hawkeye series simply wouldn’t have been as funny without Yelena’s presence.

“I’m Just Going To Kill Barton, Have Some Appetizers, And Then I’ll Go.”
Hawkeye
In the post-credits scene of Black Widow, Yelena is assigned to assassinate Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, by Valentina Fontaine. However, Hawkeye reveals that Yelena would have seemingly been happy to take on the job all on her own, clearly resenting Hawkeye for his perceived role in Black Widow’s mysterious death. The show sees Yelena make multiple attempts on Clint’s life, including once during a high-class party hosted by Kate Bishop’s mother, Eleanor.
With an elaborate braid in her hair and a fancy green overcoat hiding her Black Widow uniform, Yelena runs into Kate in the elevator, not concerned with hiding her intentions to murder her mentor. The way she cheerfully mentions throwing back some light bites alongside taking the life of an Avenger emphasizes just how confident Yelena is in her abilities. Considering she was able to keep up with her sister in a one-on-one fight, this self-assurance isn’t misplaced.
6
“What Was That?!”
Hawkeye
In the same scene, Kate does what she can to prevent Yelena from enacting her revenge, wrestling with Yelena and even pressing every floor button to delay the elevator. Yelena treats Kate as more of a childish annoyance than anything else, effortlessly judo flipping her on her back. During the scuffle, Kate gets the bright idea to slap Yelena across the face open-handed.
The hilarity of seeing Yelena’s shocked facial expression, mouth agape, is only matched by Kate’s own reaction to what she just did, clearly seeing her life flash before her eyes as Yelena stares at her with incredulity. Yelena can only yell “What was that?!” as Kate pleads for forgiveness, realizing the grave severity of disrespecting an ex-Black Widow in such a manner. Niether Kate nor Yelena seem sure on how to react to what just happened, and that only makes her eventual response all the funnier.

“You Should Have Fought Harder”
Hawkeye

Of course, Kate can only keep Yelena away from Hawkeye for so long, leading the two to eventually engage each other in a high-stakes fight that soon turns into an emotional breakdown. Gradually, Florence Pugh begins to realize that Hawkeye isn’t lying to her, and Natasha really did willingly sacrifice herself to save the half of the universe who got Snapped out of existence (including Yelena herself). When Hawkeye tells Yelena that he fought her sister for the honor, she can only unfurl her baton and spit out “You should have fought harder“.
On the surface, this seems like an incredibly cold response to someone who tried to save the life of one’s sister. However, Yelena only says this out of a deep love for her sister above all else, something she eventually realizes that Clint shares. The emotional fallout of their battle is one of the most underrated emotional beats of the entire MCU, carried by Florence Pugh’s remarkable range.

“But, In All Honesty, If I Wanted To Kill You…”
Hawkeye
Once again, Yelena Belova’s skills as a deadly globe-trotting assassin are not to be underestimated. It’s understandable at first as to why Kate would be so nervous to see Yelena suddenly appear in her apartment, especially once she realizes she’s intent on killing her mentor. Though she initially fears for her own safety, Kate soon realizes that for whatever reason, Yelena likes her enough to keep her alive, even after she gets in the way of her mission.
Helping to assuage Kate’s fears is the fact that if Yelena wanted her dead, she wouldn’t have had any time to see it coming. Yelena confirms as much when she breaks into Kate’s apartment, leaving the rest to Kate’s imagination. It’s funny to see Yelena laugh so nonchalantly about the prospect of killing her latest friend, but it’s clear she isn’t joking around when it comes to how confident she is in her abilities.

“Woah…This Would Be A Cool Way To Die”
Black Widow
At one point in Black Widow, Yelena sets out to free her surrogate father, Red Guardian, from prison along with Natasha. The rescue goes south alarmingly fast, and before long the action causes an avalanche of snow to begin pouring down on the entire facility. While keeping the helicopter she had commandeered with her sister in place, Yelena can’t help but admire the chaos, admitting that being smothered to death by an avalanche would be a “cool way to die“.
This line is then alluded to again when Yelena finds herself strapped to an operating table later in the film, expressing disappointment at the “less cool” means of her own death. She’s able to break out, of course, but it’s worth mentioning that her morbid fascinations actually did cause the deaths of dozens of people. After all, plenty of prisoners and guards alike must have perished in the avalanche, quietly making it one of the deadliest events in MCU history.

“I’ve Never Had Control Of My Own Life Before, And Now I Do. I Want To Do Things.”
Black Widow
Even if some Black Widows managed to escape the clutches of General Dreykov and the Black Widow program, they were never truly safe. The events of Black Widow revealed that every individual assassin that made it to the last stages of training was implanted with several failsafes that kept them susceptible to mind control, allowing Dreykov total dominance over their actions. Natasha even demonstrates a particular contingency that prevents any Black Widow from intentionally harming Dreykov thanks to altered pheromones.
It’s only once Yelena and Natasha are able to administer the antidote to all the Black Widows in the MCU that the women are truly freed from his influence once and for all. Knowing this, Yelena basks in the newfound freedom of her life, ready to finally make her own decisions, even if she can’t quite articulate what those decisions are yet. Of course, it’s difficult to get another job with a lengthy CV as an assassin, and Yelena soon finds herself working for Valentina.

“We’re Both Upside Down.”
Black Widow
It’s quite satisfying that Black Widow both begins and ends with the same line from Yelena Belova. At first, this line is said playfull when her and Natasha are both still kids, enjoying the closest thing the two of them have to normalcy. Ever competitive, Yelena says the line when the two are both doing back bends, prompting them to see who can hold out for longer.
The film brings it full circle when Natasha finds Yelena survived the fall from Dreykov’s plane, approaching her upside down. The delirious Yelena recalls the memory, saying the words again, thankful to see her sister somehow alive. This line bears repeating because it emphasizes the found-family nature of Natasha and Yelena’s relationship, strongly bonding them despite being far from a traditional sisterhood, even by Marvel Cinematic Universe standards.
