The Marvel Cinematic Universe could be seeing a renaissance of returning actors going to the dark side in Avengers: Doomsday, with plenty of comic precedence for evil Avengers to draw from. The controversial casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom replaced Kang as the MCU’s fascinating new direction to go in for an overarching crossover villain. Many have speculated that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doom, in particular, will be an evil variant of Iron Man who takes up the moniker of Doom, something that has happened in the Marvel Comics.

It seems as though this idea might be more likely to be true with the announcement of Chris Evans’ MCU return in Avengers: Doomsday alongside his fellow flagship character co-lead. Many have speculated that Evans’ role will correlate to the infamous comic run that turned Captain America into a HYDRA agent via the all-powerful influence of the Cosmic Cube, making another villain out of a former Avenger. This begs the question as to what other evil versions of the Avengers from the comics the film might be able to pull from for its cast.

Finally fulfilling his near-miss casting

Among the actors who almost played Thor, Tom Hiddleston is far and away the most interesting. While Hiddleston’s audition for 2011’s Thor saw him cast as Loki instead, a character he excelled as for years in the MCU, it’s fascinating to imagine how differently he might have portrayed the God of Thunder compared to Chris Hemsworth. After Loki’s soft-exit from the MCU at the end of Loki season 2 and Thor’s semi-retirement, raising Love off-world, the stage is set for a new Thor to step into the ring.
No actor has already played as many different versions of the same character in the MCU than Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, and it would be interesting to see him finally take his chameleon acting skills to a new Asgardian god altogether. Seeing Hiddleston return to his more unambiguously evil side with a nastier Thor might generate hype worthy enough to almost overshadow Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. If nothing else, it’d be a good way to get Mjolnir back in the picture for the MCU.
9 Jeremy Renner Could Play A Truly Evil Version Of Ronin
Ronin’s return could see an end to non-lethal heroes

Jeremy Renner’s time as Ronin went tragically under-explored in the MCU. During the Blip, Clint Barton hung up his Hawkeye bow in favor of a sword, roaming the Japanese countryside murdering criminals as the enigmatic Ronin. This is an arc that lasts far longer in the comics, and Avengers: Doomsday might be a good time to see Jeremy Renner probe Hawkeye’s dark side a little deeper.
Avengers: Doomsday could explore a Ronin that blurs the lines between anti-hero and villain, perhaps going overboard in his pursuit of dead criminals. The Hawkeye series explored the effect being Ronin had on Clint Barton’s psyche and reputation, with few people actually knowing that the katana-wielding vigilante and Hawkeye were one and the same. Perhaps Clint’s secret being unleashed could lead to an unapologetic return to his murderous ways.
8 Marvel Could Bring Back Edward Norton To Play An Evil Hulk
Norton could finally reprise his original MCU role at long last

The cameos of Deadpool & Wolverine set a whole new precedence for who could realistically appear in the MCU going forward. Everything from past versions of current characters to castings that died in development limbo are now on the table to re-appear, even in spite of old feuds like Ryan Reynolds and Wesley Snipes’ famous on-set beef during the filming of Blade: Trinity. It’s more likely now than ever that Edward Norton could finally reprise his role as The Hulk after being recast in The Avengers due to his creative differences with Marvel Studios.
Norton’s Hulk was altogether darker and more tortured than Mark Ruffalo’s, suiting him well for a villainous take on the incredible Avenger in Avengers: Doomsday. The most famous evil variant of The Hulk in Marvel Comics is easily Maestro, a version of the character from an alternate reality boasting Bruce Banner’s intelligence and The Hulk’s strength while having the worst personality traits of both. Maestro ends up inhabiting the Old Man Logan reality in the comics, which was briefly shown off in Deadpool & Wolverine.

7 The Evil Doctor Strange From Multiverse Of Madness Could Return
The MCU has played with one evil Avenger already

It’s easy to forget in all the excitement of the upcoming roles that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has played with the idea of an evil version of an Avenger in a mainline movie once before, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Earth-199999’s Doctor Strange, also known as “Sinister Strange”, grew cold and callous after the loss of Christine Palmer, becoming a dark wizard obsessed with power, slowly being corrupted by the use of the Darkhold. Sinister Strange eventually dies after a battle with his heroic self, brutally impaled on the spiky fence of his Sanctum.

If there’s one character who could believably come back from the brink of death, however, it’s Sinister Strange. Doctor Strange himself is well-versed in astral projection and other techniques that separate the body and spirit, and there’s no telling what other manner of profane, forbidden magics his evil counterpart might be familiar with to circumvent his own death at the last moment. The return of Benedict Cumberbatch’s sneerign smile as Sinister Strange would be a welcome sight in Avengers: Doomsday.
6 Robert Downey Jr. Could Pull Double Duty As Steel Corpse
Doctor Doom isn’t the only way evil Iron Man could work
A lot of speculation still surrounds the topic of whether Robert Downey Jr.’s Doom will be an Iron Man variant or simply a new adaptation of Victor von Doom that happens to use the same actor. If the latter ends up being the case, the MCU could still have their cake and eat it too by bringing Iron Man back in a sense, with Doom ultimately behind the controls of the hero’s evil return. The MCU could look no further than Steel Corpse from the comics in order to achieve this.

In a reality where the Avengers are forced to hunt down mutants, Steel Corpse exists as a horrific version of Iron Man whose body is all but decayed, kept alive against his will by a government-controlled Iron Man suit built around his living corpse. Tony Stark’s brain is used as a control unit for the powerful suit, which can be taken over to act outside his own will. Robert Downey Jr. pulling double-duty as a Steel Corpse piloted by Doom would earn back a lot of good will the MCU lost with Downey Jr.’s casting.
5 Scarlett Johansson’s Red Cat Could Be The Catwoman To Spider-Man’s Batman
An interesting twist on the typical evil Avenger

Interestingly enough, there aren’t many unambiguously evil versions of Black Widow from Marvel Comics, with Natasha Romanoff herself being by default a morally flexible superhero with a very dark past of misdeeds. One alternate version of Black Widow Scarlett Johansson could return to play, Red Cat, could subvert the typical expectations of an evil Avenger. In one alternate reality created by the Hobgoblin, Spider-Man’s love interest cat burglar, Black Cat, is replaced by Red Cat, a variant of the character who serves as that universe’s Natasha Romanoff.
Like Black Cat, Red Cat is less of a villain and more of a criminal with a heart of gold, just as likely to help Spider-Man as she is to go up against him on the other side of the law. Though she might not be all that evil, Red Cat could be an interesting way to challenge Spider-Man’s moral compass in Avengers: Doomsday. Seeing Scarlett Johansson return to playing a version of Natasha Romanoff would be more than worth the effort of writing Red Cat in.
4 Ioan Gruffudd Could Return As The Master
Could pit The Fantastic Four’s best modern villain against their best classic one
✕ Remove Ads
It’s no secret that The Fantastic Four will likely play a huge role in Avengers: Doomsday, considering that Doctor Doom is a Fantastic Four villain first and foremost. With this being the case, it would be all the sweeter to see an evil variant of one of the quartet exists alongside Doom, perhaps even providing him with a villainous rival to contend with as well as the heroes. Enter The Maker, the Mr. Fantastic from the Ultimate Marvel Comics continuity who becomes an egotistical supervillain mastermind.
It would be thrilling to see Ioan Gruffudd reprise his role as Reed Richards in the capacity of The Master, who could cause just as much trouble as Doom himself. Gruffudd’s Reed was mentioned in the MCU once already thanks to the cameos of Deadpool & Wolverine, and seeing him step back into the MCU after a self-aggrandizing off-screen journey would be a real treat. Even if he only ends up as a minor antagonist, The Maker would be an excellent addition to Avengers: Doomsday.

3 Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Could Finally Succumb To The Venom Symbiote
The symbiote storyline is long overdue for the MCU’s Spider-Man
Custom image by Felipe Rangel
As one of the most prominent Avengers still active in-universe, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is also likely to have some heavy screen time in Avengers: Doomsday. Considering the lonely and frustrating spot he found himself in at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it’s never been a better time for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to begin his symbiote suit arc, as was done in the Sam Raimi trilogy. Thanks to a leftover chunk of Venom left behind by Tom Hardy’s cameo in the same film, this possibility is tantalizingly close to manifesting.

Clad in a black symbiote-empowered suit, Spider-Man’s temper and grief could be channeled into his hero work, slowly prodding him towards more and more evil actions before some kind of intervention. Admittedly, this would be best explored in a Spider-Man 4 solo film. However, the fact that in the comics, Spider-Man first donned the black suit in the Secret Wars storyline means that Avengers: Doomsday might be the perfect spot for the MCU to introduce Peter Parker to the symbiote for further use in Avengers: Secret Wars.
2 Tom Cruise Could Finally Play Iron Man, But Evil
Cruise is one of the biggest stars the MCU never captured
Many actors nearly played Iron Man before Robert Downey Jr. got the role, with Tom Cruise’s near-miss being among the most eyebrow-raising. Long before the MCU was a glimmer in Marvel Studios’ eye, Tom Cruise was nearly attached to an Iron Man script circulating in 1997, falling out at the last second when the project ultimately fell through. After decades, this near-miss in Cruise’s career could pay off as a record-shattering appearance in the MCU as an evil Iron Man variant.

Seeing Robert Downey Jr. stand across from the actor who nearly took his spot as Iron Man behind the mask of a new character would be an incredible premise to watch play out. It’s also rare that Tom Cruise gets to play a villain, but when he does, like in Interview with a Vampire, it results in some of his best performances. Cruise’s maniacal smile blazing atop a suit of Iron Man armor would be a welcome terror to unleash on the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday.
1 Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch Could Return As A Villainous Avenger
Scarlet Witch’s evil story might not be over with
Custom Image by Severina Chu
Few MCU characters have had as long and varied a journey throughout the MCU as Scarlet Witch. Going from villain to hero to villain again only to be “redeemed” by a last-minute display of selflessness and grief, Wanda Maximoff’s death beneath the collapse of Mount Wungadore was always something of an anti-climactic end to her tumultuous story. Many fans have speculated that she survived the event, considering her corpse is never seen, and if there’s one character in the MCU powerful enough to shrug off a literal mountain, it’s the reality-warper Scarlet Witch.

Perhaps the return of Scarlet Witch under the employ of Doctor Doom could be the ace-in-the-hole he needs to truly threaten the MCU. Doom’s influence could easily see Elizabeth Olsen return as Scarlet Witch in an even more unambiguously evil role, turning her awesome powers against the Avengers once more. It would also be nice for Avengers: Doomsday to not have to establish any more new antagonists than Doom himself.
