10 Fun Adventure Movies You Can Stream Right Now (That You Probably Haven’t Seen Before)

From fantastical tales that could never take place in the real world to thrilling accounts based on near-unbelievable true stories, there’s no set form to a perfect adventure movie. “Adventure” is a notably broad term in and of itself, meaning that as long as the experience depicted within them qualifies as an exciting, unusual, or daring one, a wide variety of movies can technically be classed as “adventure” movies.

The biggest streaming platforms all have dozens of adventure films, to the point that most viewers probably haven’t even seen many of them before. That said, there are a lot of fun entries, ranging from legitimately excellent films to riotously entertaining B-movies, that many might not be familiar with.

A modernized adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic novel of the same name, 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth follows Brendan Fraser’s Trevor Anderson and his nephew, Josh Hutcherson’s Sean, as he journeys to the planet’s center in search of his lost brother. Journey to the Center of the Earth seemed tailor-made as Fraser’s The Mummy replacement, only for him to be swapped out for Dwayne Johnson in 2012’s sequel, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

The movie does exactly what it says on the tin, making it more than worthy of a revisit nearly twenty years after it was initially released. Based on the remarkable true story of the 1952 SS Pendleton rescue, 2016’s The Finest Hours depicts a daring mission against the elements to rescue stranded crew members after their ship is partially destroyed by a cyclone. Featuring an all-star ensemble cast, the A-list likes of Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, and Ben Foster do their best to pay respectful tribute to the incredible heroism demonstrated by these real-life individuals against the backdrop of a polished adventure-disaster outing.

Clocking in with an entirely respectable Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer Score of 64%, The Finest Hours is the quintessential old-fashioned adventure-disaster movie, sticking to tried-and-tested methods for success without breaking any particularly new ground. A stylish adaptation of a mind-blowing true story, Craig Gillespie’s film is one of several excellent lesser-known adventure films currently available to stream on Disney+.

Set in Finland during WWII, 2022’s Sisu chronicles a selection of gruesome adventures encountered by a seemingly indestructible former Finnish commando, as he attempts to get a trove of gold nuggets to Helsinki with a Nazi platoon hot on his heels. A fast-paced and viscerally intense war movie, Sisu keeps audiences glued to the edge of their streets through a riotously entertaining and comically violent tale.

As a Finnish production, Sisu is often overlooked in favor of its more Western contemporaries when it comes to similar outings of its ilk. It’s a crying shame, given that Jalmari Helander’s movie is one of the most unabashedly entertaining outings of the last decade, irrespective of genre. A gleeful blend of dark humor and relentlessly graphic violence that doesn’t remove its foot from the gas until the credits roll, Sisu presents essential Netflix viewing for anybody currently struggling to find a bloody adventure romp.

Serving as one of the most underrated movies currently streaming on Disney+, 2019’s Togo is based on the true story of the eponymous aging lead sled dog and his handler. The pair underwent an epic journey in 1925, enduring perilous conditions to obtain vital medicine supplies following a diphtheria outbreak in Nome, Alaska. Togo brings their stirring adventures to life onscreen, courtesy of some excellent direction from Ericson Core and a typically assured lead performance from Willem Dafoe.

Receiving glowing reviews from critics, Togo is a polished historical adventure outing that pays tender tribute to its real-life heroes while lending new meaning to the expression “we don’t deserve dogs.” With a Hollywood mainstay like Dafoe at the helm and a first-rate 92% Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer Score to boot, it’s somewhat remarkable that Core’s movie remains such a hidden gem for the wider genre.

Despite an impressive box-office return of more than $250 million worldwide against a budget of less than half that amount, some critics went as far as to label Roland Emmerich’s 10,000 BC as one of the worst films ever made. Chronicling the adventures of a prehistoric hunter-gatherer tribe, this unenviable state of affairs is underlined by the movie’s dismal Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer Score of just 10%.

Despite their prominent placement in Emmerich’s movie, species like wooly mammoths or saber-tooth tigers were actually on the verge of extinction at the time 10,000 BC is set – if they hadn’t died out already!

However, for anybody willing to forego a meaningful story, nuanced characters, or general historical accuracy in favor of a ludicrously silly action-adventure popcorn romp, 10,000 BC presents ideal guilty pleasure viewing. The quintessential bad movie with great special effects, Emmerich’s cheesy outing is so stupidly over-the-top and factually inconceivable that it actually makes for a riotously fun watch if one is to let go of any expectations whatsoever. Accordingly, it’s one of the more entertaining obscure adventure outings that Prime Video currently has to offer.

Based on Jack London’s novel of the same name, The Call of the Wild depicts the adventures of a dog named Buck after he is kidnapped from his home, following the colossal Saint Bernard-Scotch Shepherd mix from his former life of comfort all the way to the wilderness of the Yukon. While Chris Sanders’ film was subjected to some criticism for the borderline-creepy photorealistic computer animation used to bring the movie’s animals to life, The Call of the Wild still serves as a worthy cinematic adaptation of a seminal literary adventure.

Earning widely positive reviews for its affectionate and earnest take on London’s classic story, the 2020 movie is currently available to stream on Disney+. The Call of the Wild may have been a box-office bomb but presents one of modern cinema’s better dog movies, a state of affairs aided by its timeless central premise and a soulfully gruff turn from Harrison Ford as Buck’s eventual owner, John Thornton.

Starring the late Paul Walker as the dogs’ handler, Jerry Shepard, 2006’s Eight Below follows the adventures of eight sled dogs trapped in the frozen waste of Antarctica. The team is forced into a fight for survival after being separated from their owner, battling hunger and the brutal elements as Shephard desperately tries to organize a rescue mission. While Frank Marshall’s picture received positive reviews on release, the film has faded into obscurity in recent years, meaning that it’s well worth a revisit as of 2025.

A survival film that will strike a tender chord with anybody who has ever had dogs of their own, Marshall’s Picture is one of the best lesser-known adventure films that Disney+ currently has to offer.

Despite being one of cinema’s saddest dog movies courtesy of several tear-jerking furry casualties throughout the story, Eight Below is an ultimately uplifting underdog tale of survival against all odds. A well-paced survival adventure that will strike a tender chord with anybody who has ever had dogs of their own, Marshall’s movie is one of the best lesser-known adventure films that Disney+ currently has to offer.

Led by The Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen, 2004’s Hidalgo chronicles the legend of long-distance racer, Frank Hopkins, and his eponymous Mustang. The duo are alleged to have pipped an array of pure-blooded Arabian horses and their Bedouin riders to win the “Ocean of Fire”; a 3,000-mile race through the searing heat of the Najd desert for a lucrative cash prize that forms the premise of Joe Johnston’s equestrian adventure outing.

Hidalgo may have only received middling reviews, but the film sees Mortensen arguably turn in one of cinema’s best portrayals of a real-life person in a Western. The Eastern Promises star’s stirring bow in this perennial underdog story is worth giving the movie a go in and of itself, with Hidalgo’s considerable watchability aided by an array of first-rate action sequences. Offering ideal viewing for anybody looking for a gripping adventure based on a real-life tale, Hidalgo is currently streaming on Prime Video.
