Star Wars: The Clone Wars had many shocking twists throughout its seven-season run, but one of the most memorable came in the season 5 finale. As Ahsoka Tano is about to be found guilty of a crime she didn’t commit, Anakin Skywalker visits her best friend, Barriss Offee, hoping to find a lead on the real culprit. Barriss initially shows concern for Ahsoka’s plight, remaining consistent with her previous portrayal.

This was especially surprising for fans of the original Star Wars Expanded Universe, where Barriss became a Jedi Knight, took her own Padawan, and died during Order 66.

This makes it completely unexpected when Barriss suddenly ignites a pair of red lightsabers and exposes herself as the one who framed Ahsoka. Making a model Jedi Padawan like Barriss into a traitor made this reveal devastating and showed how much the Clone Wars really affected the Jedi Order. This was especially surprising for fans of the original Star Wars Expanded Universe, where Barriss became a Jedi Knight, took her own Padawan, and died during Order 66.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is famous (and infamous) for subverting audience expectations, meaning it’s full of memorable twists. One of its best comes near the end when Luke Skywalker shows up at the rebel base on Crait, despite having had no way to get off Ahch-To when Rey left. Before the viewer can process this, the movie has Luke duel Kylo Ren, buying the Resistance time to escape.

The scene cleverly hints that something isn’t quite right about Luke without directly spoiling the big secret. This makes it shocking yet believable when Kylo Ren fails to cut his former master down and the real Luke is revealed to be projecting his image all the way from Ahch-To. It’s an impressive display of power from Luke and highly ironic that the First Order’s attempts to kill him could never have done anything.

Like many Star Wars video games that came before it, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has a plot twist that catches players off guard and recontextualizes much of the story. The game’s main character, Jedi survivor Cal Kestis, is aided by his friend Bode Akuna from the first level. Aside from Bode’s skepticism of joining a rebel cell and warning Cal to be careful, there’s almost no indication of ill intent.

Turning one of Cal’s best friends into the final boss makes a tragic conclusion appropriate for a Star Wars story.

Many viewers were stunned to see Darth Maul killed off so early in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, a decision George Lucas would eventually rectify. The Clone Wars season 3 confirmed that Maul had survived his duel with Obi-Wan and now lived in exile, setting Savage Opress on a quest to find his long-lost brother. Maul’s grand return finally came in the last two episodes of season 4 when he regained his sanity and sought revenge on Obi-Wan.

Before these episodes, the idea of Darth Maul returning had been limited to fan theories and non-canon Star Wars comics, so it seemed unlikely it would ever really happen. The Death Star trench run is still one of the most iconic scenes in Star Wars nearly 50 years later, but it was also considered one of the original film’s weak spots. After acquiring the Death Star plans, the rebels discover a tiny port that, when targeted with a properly aimed torpedo, could destroy the entire station in one big explosion. This seemed odd and highly convenient, even by Star Wars standards.

While it was logical to assume that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would address this, nobody could have predicted that this design flaw was intentional. In the movie’s most emotional scene, Galen Erso reveals that he intentionally included this weakness in the Death Star and made it small so the Empire would never find it. Galen’s sacrifice for the Rebellion recontextualizes the Death Star’s flaw and makes its destruction in A New Hope more gratifying.

The entire plot of The Mandalorian season 2 revolved around Din Djarin taking Grogu to the Jedi, so it was inevitable that the finale would end with one showing up. After much theorizing among fans, the Jedi who arrived to save the group was Luke Skywalker, now a full Jedi Master. Even though Luke’s identity is obvious to any longtime fan, it doesn’t take away from the epic presentation.

This twist only works so well because the writers made the audience wait for it all season and consistently built up to it. Rather than just having Luke identify himself, the scene treats Luke as if nobody knows who he is, showing how incredible he is through his actions alone. Topped by fantastic cinematography, an epic musical score, and heartfelt performances from the cast, this twist was a highlight of The Mandalorian.

Following the Star Wars Rebels season 2 finale, fans were desperate to learn of Ahsoka’s fate after her climactic duel with Darth Vader. The episode had hinted at Ahsoka’s survival by showing her walking into the temple, but Dave Filoni suggested that this could symbolize her becoming one with the Force. If Ahsoka was alive, it was simply a matter of how and when she would escape from Malachor.

The answer would come near the end of season 4 when Ezra Bridger discovered a realm called the World Between Worlds, connecting pivotal moments across space and time. As if this weren’t enough of a monumental twist, Ezra found himself looking at Ahsoka’s duel with Vader, pulling her through the portal just before Vader killed her. This twist simultaneously introduced time travel, brought Ahsoka back and answered burning questions.

After playing Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Andy Serkis returned to play one of the best characters in Andor season 1, Kino Loy. Initially hesitant about breaking out, Kino is devastated when he learns that prisoners are never really released, only transferred to work elsewhere. This motivates him to work with Cassian Andor, motivating the other prisoners in one of the best monologs in Star Wars.

Although their plan is successful, Kino can only watch the other prisoners jump to freedom when it’s revealed that he can’t swim. As tragic as the twist is, it’s beautifully heartbreaking that Kino would fight so hard to free his friends knowing that he himself could never escape alive. It’s a gut-wrenching moment and perfectly highlights Andor‘s larger themes about the sacrifices necessary for rebellion.

It may be the most famous twist in film history now, but no plot turn has impacted Star Wars more than Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker’s father. Before this moment, Luke and the audience believed his father and Darth Vader were two different people, representing the hero or the villain Luke could become. By revealing they were the same person, Luke’s worldview and confidence were shattered.

David Prowse spoiled this twist in 1978, but the news didn’t spread rapidly since the internet didn’t exist.

George Lucas was so set on keeping this twist a secret that only a handful of people knew about it, as the shooting script had a completely different line. This ensured audiences would be taken off guard in the cinema, making them feel the shock alongside Luke.
