Weddings should be a time of joy and togetherness, a culmination of a beautiful love story, and a celebration of a relationship between two soulmates. Friends and family get together for a big party that takes a lot of time and effort to plan. But, in the world of movies, anything can happen. The flowers not arriving or a rip in the veil might be the least of a bride or groom’s troubles when there’s a wedding crasher or a snowstorm.

After watching a couple fall in love for about two hours, it is satisfying to see the big day onscreen, so it’s quite special when a romantic comedy includes a wedding scene. There are movies centered solely on the build-up to a wedding, so by the time it comes around, viewers are excited to see what it will look like. While sometimes the wedding isn’t the main focus of a film, the scene is so important that it stands out among the rest of the story.

Love Actually (2003)

As one of the most romantic Christmas movies ever, Love Actually features many scenes that tug on the heartstrings. From the iconic notecard scene to the heartbreaking moment Emma Thompson cries, this film is packed with emotion. It explores many different relationships, including that of Juliet and Peter, who get married at the very beginning of the film. The audience sees a lot of the wedding and reception, as well as a lot of close-up shots of Juliet courtesy of Mark’s video.

But, there is one specific moment during the wedding that makes it stand out. After the couple is pronounced husband and wife and starts to make their way back down the aisle, a singer comes out and begins to serenade them with “All You Need is Love” by The Beatles. Then, more and more people begin to get up playing various instruments as the couple, as well as the guests, look on with delight. Richard Curtis said the idea for this came from Jim Henson’s funeral where a similar thing was done with The Muppets (via Vogue).

The Little Mermaid (1989)

This beloved Disney classic The Little Mermaid is not simply a love story, but the story of a mermaid princess who follows her dreams to live on the shore. When Ariel falls in love with Eric, it is the push she needs to do something about it. After all, her treasure trove of memorabilia from the surface is her most prized collection. Ariel is rebellious and strong-willed, and her decision to go after what she wants isn’t solely based on Eric’s blue eyes; she simply wants to be part of that world.

The way she goes about it probably isn’t the wisest, as getting involved with Ursula is incredibly dangerous. However, after Triton is saved and the sea witch is defeated, he lets his daughter follow her heart and turns her mermaid tale into the legs she so wanted. As the couple gets married aboard a ship, with the merpeople waving out from the water, it shows a beautiful connection between the worlds above and under the sea.

Bridesmaids (2011)

In a movie all about preparing for a wedding, it stands to reason that the event itself would be quite spectacular and, thanks to Helen, it certainly was. As Lilian’s childhood best friend Annie and her new friend fight for her attention, it leads to all kinds of shenanigans. The moment they both try to have the last word at the bridal shower, the viewers are in for a treat. From explosive food poisoning at a dress fitting to getting kicked off a plane mid-flight, their rivalry is hilarious to watch.

By the time the wedding comes around, Helen has already taken over the planning as the new maid of honor, ensuring the ceremony and reception are as over the top as possible. From the elaborate wedding dress to the laser show, there is nothing subtle about any of it. Wilson Phillips is the wedding band, and the vows take place on elevated platforms in a swimming pool. The scene is filled with so many more details that call back to some of the comedic moments from the film, making it the perfect ending.

The Graduate (1967)

The Graduate not only features one of the most famous May/December romances of all time, but also boasts one of the most iconic wedding scenes in history. While Ben is having his affair with Mrs. Robinson, he meets and develops feelings for her daughter, Elaine. The complexity of the relationships get in the way of their budding romance, and Elaine ends up at the altar with another man.

Ben then proceeds to realize that she is the one who got away and makes the very bold decision to crash her wedding and make one more plea to win her back. In the most dramatic fashion, no less. As he runs into the church out of breath and sweaty, he calls out Elaine’s name with desperation as all the guests look at him with shock and horror in their eyes. Elaine’s scream echoes with pain throughout the pews. The couple then run out to an uncertain future, leaving viewers wondering what could possibly happen next.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

The romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians centers around a very affluent family, so it’s no wonder the wedding scene is breathtaking. The dreamlike scene is beautifully shot, extremely opulent, and has a whimsical feel. As Araminta and Colin get married, it’s in one of the most stunning ceremonies in film. Each detail is polished to perfection, from the flooded aisle that looks like a stream to the sounds of water, creating an ethereal atmosphere.

“Crazy Rich” is very much the theme of this wedding as the main protagonist, Rachel, looks on with awe. Each elaborate part of this lavish event reinforces the differences between her world and that of her boyfriend Nick who belongs in this setting of luxury while she feels out of place. The Godfather (1972)

It also gave Coppola the opportunity to present the key members of the Corleone family. The audience is introduced to Sonny and Michael, and learns all about their past and family dynamics. Tom Hagen’s character is also established, which shows just how important he is to the family. A lot of exposition and groundwork all happen during this one wedding, which includes setting up the rules of the crime world as well as the relationships within the Corleone family.

Coming To America (1988)

In Coming to America, Prince Akeem is the crown prince of the fictional kingdom of Zamunda but has never experienced life outside the opulent confines of his privileged upbringing. When it comes time for him to marry, instead of following tradition and going through with an arranged marriage, he chooses to find his own bride. He travels to New York, specifically Queens, because that’s where he believes he will find his future queen. He begins working at McDowell’s, where he meets Lisa, whom he soon develops feelings for.

Their love story is not a simple one, especially as he does not reveal his true identity to the woman he loves. When his parents come to fetch their runaway son and bring him back to Zamunda where his arranged marriage is to go ahead, all is revealed and Lisa is left hurt and confused. Back in his kingdom, an elaborate wedding is taking place complete with ornate decorations and one of the biggest wedding dresses in movie history. Just as Akeem and the viewers prepare for the possibility of a sad ending, it’s revealed that it’s Lisa under the veil.

27 Dresses (2008)

Part of Katherine Heigl’s impressive collection of romantic comedies, 27 Dresses tells the story of Jane. She’s a hopeless romantic, and a very good friend, who has been a bridesmaid 27 times. When her little sister ends up getting engaged to the man of her dreams, she is once again called up for bridesmaid duty, but the whole ordeal takes many twists and turns. One of them involves her favorite lifestyle journalist covering the nuptials. During one of their interviews, Jane shows Kevin her entire collection of bridesmaid dresses and opens up in the process.

In true rom-com fashion, it is, of course, Jane and Kevin who fall in love and get married, and the scene is both romantic and satisfying. While she doesn’t have the wedding she envisaged, Jane ties the knot in an intimate ceremony at the beach with possibly the largest bridal party ever. As the camera pulls away, all the women whose weddings she was in are lined up wearing the hideous bridesmaid dresses that she was required to wear. It was a sweet moment that shows that Jane’s friends all showed up when it was her time to shine.

Father Of The Bride (1991)

This charming comedy follows George Banks as he grapples with his daughter’s upcoming nuptials. From his over-the-top reaction as he finds out about the engagement, to a big meltdown about hot dog buns, it’s safe to say he is not taking this well. That fear and apprehension mostly stem from his love for his daughter, and not wanting to let her go. There is a beautiful scene on the eve of the big day when he grabs his heart as he hears both his kids shout goodnight from their respective rooms one last time.

When this day finally comes around there is a lot going on. With a wedding planner like Franck Eggelhoffer, any event is guaranteed to be fabulous. Multiple memorable scenes happen throughout, including Annie wearing the sneakers her dad made for her, Matty helping park cars, and Franck getting emotional when George congratulates him on a job well done. But it’s the moment George tries to get to Annie before she leaves for her honeymoon but just misses her that is the most heartrending.

He’s so sad to have missed this final moment with his beloved daughter, as she leaves both literally and metaphorically. But then, Annie calls and the two share a very sweet heart-to-heart over the phone. This moment perfectly encapsulates how a wedding changes the dynamic of a family, and how parents can sometimes find it difficult to let their child go.
