The Green Lantern mythos seems to be an important part of the DCU, and there is no shortage of fantastic storyline that the universe should adapt regarding the Green Lantern Corps. Lanterns will feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart, while James Gunn’s Superman will introduce the world to Guy Gardner. Even though the DCU is just beginning, there are already three Green Lanterns set to appear in the budding universe.

Green Lantern has not had the best luck when it comes to live-action, as the Ryan Reynolds-led movie from 2011 was a massive failure, bombing at the box-office and becoming the punchline of many jokes (from Reynolds himself) about it. Hopefully, the DCU can redeem it, considering HBO’s Lanterns looks to be a more grounded, prestigious attempt at adapting the larger-than-life mythos. Diving into the wider world of the Green Lantern Corps, there are several storylines we hope to see in the DCU.

Blackest Night
Finale Of The Undead
Close
“Blackest Night” could essentially be DC’s answer to Avengers: Endgame, if Endgame was about many dead Avengers coming back to life as Zombies while the rest of the heroes have to stop them. So, it’s basically like Marvel Zombies, but told on a massive, galactic scale that features heroes across the entirety of DC getting their very own Lantern rings (of various colors) to help defeat the Black Lantern Corps.
“Blackest Night” was the finale to the War of Light story arc that Geoff Johns started with Green Lantern: Rebirth.
Honestly, trying to pull off a “Blackest Night” adaptation in a shared universe seems like an impossible task. There are so many moving parts to be put into place and having to kill off a decent number of the universe’s most popular heroes beforehand in order to make the pay-off worth it might prove difficult. Still, having the epic conclusion to the DCU be “Blackest Night” could be one of the greatest superhero cinematic events ever.

Emerald Twilight
A Divisive Hal Jordan Story
Close
“Emerald Twilight” might genuinely be on the table in the DCU given that Kyle Chandler (Hal Jordan) is nearing 60 years old, and John Stewart looks to be the main Green Lantern for the Justice League whenever that becomes a thing. There might not be long-term plans for Chandler as the character, so adapting arguably the most divisive Hal Jordan storyline could be a bold move by the DCU.
Following “Death of Superman”, DC wanted to do another game-changing story for its other heroes. For Green Lantern, it featured Hal Jordan losing his mind after witnessing his entire city destroyed. He goes on to eliminate the entire Green Lanter Corps, which eventually leads to Hal Jordan’s death. “Emerald Twilight” also introduces Kyle Rayner as a new human Green Lantern. It’s divisive for sure, but seems like a possible direction the DCU can take for the character.

War Of The Green Lanterns
A Battle Among The Green Lantern Corps
Close
With Guy Gardner, Hal Jordan, and John Stewart all being introduced into the DCU, that hopefully means more could be brought in later, including the entirety of the Green Lantern Mythos both on Earth and in the universe. The lore behind the Green Lantern Corps is massive, with a lot of material to incorporate into the DCU. Whenever the wider world of the Lanterns opens up, adapting “War of the Green Lanterns” could be a fantastic way to explore it.

“War of the Green Lanterns” is essentially a civil war between various members of the Green Lantern Corps, where Hal, John, Guy, and Kyle Rayner (along with other Green Lanterns) have to stop a subsect of mind-controlled Corps members led by a rogue Guardian, who are the creators of the Green Lanterns. It’s an incredible story that features the various human Green Lanterns getting other colored rings to help in their fight.

Rage Planet
Earth-Based Lantern Story
Close
Lanterns on HBO is supposed to be an Earth-based, grounded story in the vein of True Detective. While very enticing, it’s unclear how much of the wider Green Lantern universe will be featured in the series. If the DCU does want to keep the entirety of Lanterns focused on Earth, adapting “Rage Planet” could be a great way to incorporate other Lantern Corps while still doing that. However, it would have to come with some massive changes to the source material to fit into the DCU’s plans.
“Rage Planet” centers on the Green Lanterns Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz, who have to work together to stop Red Lantern leader Atrocitus from attempting to infect Earth with his rage. It’s essentially a buddy-cop story between Cruz and Baz, but elements of it could be adapted to focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart in similar roles as they try to stop the Red Lanterns from taking over.

Hard Traveling Heroes
An Amazing Crossover
Close
Originally published in 1970, the Green Lantern and Green Arrow team-up story called “Hard Traveling Heroes” featured the two characters in what would go on to be a character-defining run for both of them. The concept is simple enough; the two “Green” characters team up and try to work together despite their differences. It’s a quintessential book for both Green Lantern and Green Arrow fans and could be a perfect way to have a team-up film that explores some heavy things.
Kyle Chandler could make gold with a storyline like “Hard Traveling Heroes.”

What works best about “Hard Traveling Heroes” is how it defines the morality of both Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern and Green Arrow. They are political opposites and go about being heroes in different ways. It dives into a lot of social issues that still feel relevant over 5 decades later, and helps Hal Jordan see the world in a different way than ever before. Kyle Chandler could make gold with a storyline like “Hard Traveling Heroes.”

Wrath of the First Lantern
Deeper Lantern Lore
Close
If the DCU really wants to get into the complex Green Lantern Crops, adapting “Wrath of the First Lantern” could be a mind-blowing way to do just that. The story features the First Lantern attempting to destroy the Guardians along with the rest of the Green Lantern Corps with his ability to alter reality. Known as Volthoom, he was the first to ever weld a power ring. He cannot die, having lived for ten billion years.
Arguably, some of the best moments in this story revolve around the relationship between Hal Jordan and Sinestro. The contentious “friendship” between the two characters is explored during the events of the story. In fact, one of the greatest Sinestro quotes comes from it. “That’s the tragedy of all this, Jordan. Hal. We’ll always be friends.” It’s a complex moment between the two best Green Lantern characters of all time.
4
Sins of the Star Sapphire
Violet Light Of Love
Close
One of Geoff Johns’ greatest contributions to DC Comics as a whole was his reimagining of Green Lantern’s mythos. After bringing back Hal Jordan in Green Lantern: Rebirth, Johns began to establish the emotional light spectrum, which featured a number of different colors which corresponded with an emotion, and each eventually got their own Lantern Corps. One of the most interesting is the Star Sapphire Corps.
Wielding the violet light of love, “Sins of the Star Sapphire” is the first big story revolving around Star Sapphire Corps. Despite powering their rings through love, they are typically shown as being antagonists to the Green Lantern Corps, with Hal Jordan’s own love interest, Carol Ferris, being a member of their Corps. “Sins of the Star Sapphire” was just one piece in Johns’ War of Light story arc, adding another layer to the ever-evolving narrative.
3
Rage of the Red Lanterns
Uncontrollable Amounts Of Rage
Close
Alongside the other Lantern Crops, Johns introduced the Red Lanterns during his War of Light story arc. “Rage of the Red Lanterns” dives into the origins of the new Corps and how they wield the red light of rage. Atrocitus is the leader of the Red Lanterns and has become one of Green Lantern’s greatest villains over the years, thanks to “Rage of the Red Lanterns” and Geoff Johns’ work in establishing the various Lantern Corps.

Seeing “Rage of the Red Lanterns” play out in the DCU could be a dream come true for Green Lantern fans. The Red Lanterns are easily the most violent and unpredictable villains for the Green Lantern Corps due to the uncontrollable rage they use to power their rings. It would be awesome to see how the DCU is able to bring the Red Lanterns to life and how they could become a formidable force in the universe.
2
Agent Orange
Green Lantern’s Most Underrated Villain
Close
A personal favorite, “Agent Orange” is most notable for introducing one of Green Lantern’s most underrated villains, Larfleeze, into the wider Green Lanterns mythos. The story revolves around the Green Lanterns discovering the Larfleeze and the Orange Lantern Corps. Orange Lanterns are powered by avarice (greed), which makes it particularly funny that Larfleeze is actually the only member of the Corps. He wants the power all to himself and thwarts anyone who he perceives as a threat to his power ring.
Larfleeze uses his powers by summoning an army of orange light avatars of all the beings he has killed.
Larfleeze is a lot of fun as a villain, as he is essentially Green Lantern’s version of Gollum, only much more powerful. One of the coolest ways that Larfleeze uses his powers is by summoning an army of orange light avatars of all the beings he has killed. He may be a silly little guy, but he is also one of the most dangerous Green Lantern villains around. Adapting “Agent Orange” would be a unique angle to take for the DCU.
1
Sinestro Corps Wars
All-Out War Against Green Lantern’s Greatest Enemy
Close
“Sinestro Corps War” is perhaps the greatest storyline in Green Lantern history. Sinestro is the quintessential Green Lantern villain and the story goes into the formation of the Sinestro Corps, led by Sinestro himself, as they wield the yellow light of fear. It had massive ramifications for the Green Lantern Corps in the comics and could play the same type of role for the DCU if it is ever adapted.
“Sinestro Corps War” could be the perfect way to have a massive, blockbuster superhero film that revolves around the Green Lanterns and their all-out war against the Sinestro Corps. It also explores the morality of the Green Lanterns Corps and the limitations of their rings. It’s such a fantastic story, with some of the best Lantern action there has ever been. It would be a slum dunk for the DCU to adapt.

DC Universe
The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
