10 Intense Courtroom Dramas That Might As Well Be Thrillers

It’s unsurprising that the thriller genre and the courtroom drama go hand in hand, as most movies that touch upon a legal case are packed with tension. In the films that successfully blend both types of stories, the case is high-stakes and certain to make the audience sweat, waiting to hear the verdict and discover who’s telling the truth and who’s hiding a deeper secret. Most of these films eschew the courtroom drama tropes that aren’t realistic, though a few of the older ones can be credited with helping to create some of these formulas through their popularity and reception.

Many of the best courtroom drama movies of all time tackle the experiences of the lawyers, accused, and juries who work together to uphold the law. However, when thriller elements are introduced, the law becomes more dubious, and the characters begin to question their ethical and moral lines both inside and outside the courtroom. Though the theatrics that take place in court are fun to watch, many of the most tension-packed moments in these movies take place in the real world, where people are willing to cross into dangerous territory.

Paranoia runs deep throughout JFK, a movie not only about legal dramas and violence but also about the nature of conspiracy within American culture. Kevin Costner plays Jim Garrison, a District Attorney who believed that there was more to the assassination of John F. Kennedy than the actions of Lee Harvey Oswald. The fact that JFK so readily dived into the possibility of truth surrounding conspiracies made the movie a lightning rod for controversy, but it also elevated the drama to a new level.

Throughout JFK, Garrison works to uncover what he believes to be the holes in the reports surrounding the assassination, even though the other characters in the film are just as doubtful as the audience. However, JFK is about much more than proving Garrison’s theory and becomes a complex exploration of the man himself. The truth at the heart of JFK becomes less important as the viewer is taken on an unforgettable, action-packed adventure.

Clint Eastwood’s latest directorial achievement is a great addition to the courtroom drama genre. Due to its quality, Juror #2 should be much more widely recognized than it was. Nicholas Hoult gives a jaw-dropping performance as Justin Kemp, a young man called to serve on the jury of a murder case. There are plenty of legal dramas that touch upon the experiences of the lawyers and the accused. However, Juror #2 tackles the moral quandaries of the jury without copying the formula of 12 Angry Men.

At first, the case that Justin follows seems cut and dry, but political aspirations and prejudices make it clear that things are never as simple as they seem in Juror #2. It comes to pass that Justin himself might be further implicated than he ever imagined, complicating the case further and forcing him to put himself at the center of the argument against conviction. A nuanced and ambiguous exploration of the true nature of guilt, Juror #2 will leave you shocked.

Even those who haven’t seen A Few Good Men can likely quote a few of its most iconic scenes. Though A Few Good Men isn’t always the most accurate depiction of a courtroom, it’s easy to overlook this because of the undeniable drama and entertainment that the project offers. Aaron Sorkin based the script on his play, which is full of the snappy dialogue and unforgettable twists that the writer is known for.

Blending elements of military intrigue and betrayal with the courtroom format, A Few Good Men instantly made an impact on the genre.

However, it’s the ensemble cast and the way they deliver Sorkin’s lines that truly set A Few Good Men apart. Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson lead the cast as Daniel Kaffee and Nathan R. Jessep, who are on opposing sides of a legal battle that will determine who murdered a young Private in the Marines. Blending elements of military intrigue and betrayal with the courtroom format, A Few Good Men instantly made an impact on the genre.

Judgment at Nuremberg doesn’t just touch upon the inherent drama of the legal system but makes a larger commentary about the aftermath of World War II. With an all-star cast led by Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, and Marlene Dietrich, the early ’60s drama touches upon the real cases that tried Nazis for their crimes against humanity. Judgment at Nuremberg sees Tracy’s Chief Judge Dan Haywood try to make sense of how atrocities go not just overlooked but allowed by the common people.

The message and thematic importance of Judgment at Nuremberg hasn’t lost any of its potency as time has progressed, becoming only more relevant with time. Though it’s not as famous as her most iconic projects, Judgment at Nuremberg is one of Judy Garland’s best movies. Her work in Judgment at Nuremberg makes a case for remembering the late star as not just a musical theater performer but also as a dramatic actress.

The Rainmaker sees Francis Ford Coppola take on the courtroom drama with Matt Damon starring as Rudy Baylor, a rookie attorney who comes up against a major firm. Rudy goes through a lot early in his career, making mistakes that ultimately make him a better lawyer and allow him to stand up for a family suing their insurance company. With Damon’s likable performance and the morality of the case, it’s easy to root for Rudy to win, even when he stretches the truth.

The chemistry of the cast provides some comedic relief and breaks the tension as the case Rudy and Deck argue grows even more high stakes.

Alongside the main plotline of the trial, Rudy becomes involved with a young woman, Kelly (Claire Danes), and their relationship becomes fraught with violence and drama because of Kelly’s husband. Danny DeVito also gives a surprisingly effective dramatic performance as Rudy’s partner, Deck. The chemistry of the cast provides some comedic relief and breaks the tension as the case Rudy and Deck argue grows even more high stakes. It’s not just an issue of right and wrong but of defeating the legal machine in The Rainmaker.

Few performances within the legal genre are as iconic as Marlene Dietrich’s as Christine in Witness for the Prosecution. Directed by Billy Wilder, one of the most prolific filmmakers of his generation, Witness for the Prosecution might be an older film, but it is no less gripping and attention-grabbing than any contemporary project. Adapted from a play by Agatha Christie, it’s no wonder that the mystery and thriller elements of the story come through clearly, elevating the narrative and keeping the audience’s hearts pounding.

Set in London, Witness for the Prosecution hinges on the inherent shock value of the fact that Christine agrees to testify against her husband during the trial in which he’s accused of murder. However, this quickly turns out to be the least significant twist in Witness for the Prosecution, as the story becomes more winding and impossible to predict with every new revelation. Trying to understand Christine and guess her motivations as she manipulates the court makes watching Witness for the Prosecution a fantastic ride.

Anatomy of a Murder is full of classic tropes of the noir and thriller genres, not just the courtroom drama. With a femme fatale, conflicting testimonies, and an ambiguous ending, the movie is considered a must-see classic for many reasons. James Stewart leads the cast as the lawyer Paul Biegler, who’s pulled out of his small-town routine and thrust into the middle of a difficult case. Paul, in desperate need of money, represents a man claiming temporary insanity as a defense for the murder he committed.

In his work as Paul, Stewart demonstrates many layers to the character, proving him to be interested in justice but just as interested in winning his case and showing his skills as an attorney.

Alice Diop, known for her work within the documentary genre, steps into fiction with Saint Omer, an exploration of the parallel lives of two women during a life-changing case. Kayije Kagame stars as Rama, a young woman watching the trial of Laurence Coly (Guslagie Malanda), who’s been charged with the murder of her infant child. Rama immediately identifies with Laurence, and we explore the story through her eyes as both an observer and someone looking to mine the drama to inspire a narrative of her own.

Saint Omer leaves the results of the trial open to interpretation, leaving the viewer on edge and uncertain in the final moments of the story, mimicking life itself. Saint Omer takes the individual experiences of these two women and touches upon issues of immigration in France, motherhood, and race both in the courtroom and outside it. It’s gripping both narratively and emotionally, encouraging the audience to think deeply about what they’ve witnessed onscreen.

The French Oscar-winning courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall mines the legal genre for all the tension it’s worth. It stars Sandra Hüller as Sandra, a woman who must prove that she didn’t murder her husband, and Hüller gives a performance that has cemented her legacy as an actress on the international stage. The open-ended nature of the story and the many conflicting testimonies and plot points presented in Anatomy of a Fall ensure the audience is never quite certain of Sandra’s innocence.

There’s a case to be made that it doesn’t matter if Sandra killed her husband or not, as this concrete truth isn’t exactly what the court is looking for. As the story progresses, more information comes to light that could sway both the viewer and the court either way, making the anticipation for the verdict grow with every passing moment. Written and directed by Justine Triet, it’s clear that the filmmaker intended to weave elements of the thriller genre into the DNA of Anatomy of a Fall with the intensity of the relationship between Sandra and her husband.
