J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novel is full of magical artifacts, and many were made by the Elves. Published in three parts between 1954 and 1955, the novel formed the basis of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, which adapted a part of the novel per movie. Elves like Galadriel, Arwen, and Legolas featured heavily in Jackson’s trilogy, but most of The Lord of the Rings’ Elf lore was actually shared in The Silmarillion. This 1977 book of stories had been entrusted by Tolkien to his son for final editing and publishing after his passing.

The Silmarillion discusses the types of Elves in Middle-earth and their wide-ranging achievements. While the Dwarves were responsible for the mining of mithril and the resultant armor that sprang from it, the Elves created items imbued with special powers. Elven Rope

Elven rope may have untied itself in The Lord of the Rings. In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring movie and the first part of Tolkien’s novel, which the movie was named after, the Elf Galadriel gave the Fellowship of the Ring gifts. The Hobbit Samwise Gamgee received Elven rope from Galadriel in both the book and the movie. Elven rope is made of hithlain, which is made from the inner bark of mallorn trees.

The Elven cloaks were another gift of Galadriel’s to the Fellowship of the Ring, and they provided high-tech camouflage beyond their unassuming appearance. The Elven cloaks shifted with their surroundings, providing a chameleonic covering. Warm and practical, filling the role of a coat, the cloaks also hid wearers in their environment. The cloaks’ colors seemed to shift with the changing light.

What often seemed magical to Hobbits and Men in Lord of the Rings was merely technologically advanced to the Elves.

This seemingly iridescent quality may have reflected a style of fabric; velvet and crushed velvet are known to catch the light and reflect it in varying colors. The cloaks were also warm or cool as needed, exhibiting some kind of thermal ability, which wasn’t widely available in the medieval times that Lord of the Rings reflected. This shows how what often seemed magical to Hobbits and Men in Lord of the Rings was merely technologically advanced to the Elves.

Lembas Bread

The super-nutritious lembas bread, or waybread, was not the invention of the Elves, but it was made and used by them throughout The Lord of the Rings well into the Third Age. The baking of lembas was an art of the Valar passed down to the Elves during their time in Valinor. The Silmarillion tells of how Melian the Maia taught Galadriel how to bake lembas. Galadriel used this crucial skill in The Fellowship of the Ring.

The wise leader of Lothlórien sent the Fellowship off with enough lembas bread to get them through their journey, and it would sustain them in times of need. This super-powered bread packs the punch of a meal 10 times its size or more, so eating it sparingly is advised. Pippin learned this the hard way in Peter Jackson’s Fellowship of the Ring movie when he ate four.

The Mirror Of Galadriel

Divination Mirror

The famed mirror of Galadriel was used by Frodo and Sam in The Fellowship of the Ring, showing them important occurrences in other places and other times. This divination mirror was one of Galadriel’s tools, showing what may come to pass, what may be, or what has been. Some things shown by the mirror may never come to pass, making the mirror both good and dangerous, as Galadriel stated.

Samwise Gamgee had been stating his desire to see Elf-magic in Lord of the Rings, and Galadriel confirmed that she wasn’t sure what he meant, but she would show him the mirror, as this would seem magic to him. Galadriel said that the term magic was more often associated with darker sorcerers. This lined up with Tolkien’s view on magic – Tolkien associated magic with the dark alteration of nature. However, in line with the legendarium’s mythopoeic nature and its related inconsistencies, the word magic was also occasionally used for the forces of light.

Sting

Frodo’s Sword

Sting was the Elvish dagger that became Frodo and Bilbo’s sword in Lord of the Rings. This Elvish creation glowed blue when Orcs were near, alerting its owner to impending danger. While not a match for some of the Elves’ most powerful creations in The Lord of the Rings, this handy dagger saved both Bilbo and Frodo on more than one occasion. Bilbo found Sting during the events of The Hobbit.

After besting the trolls along with Thorin and his Company, Bilbo had access to the hoard of the trolls. This hoard contained some surprising assets, which Elrond noted must have been long-lost Elvish works. While Bilbo claimed Sting, Gandalf claimed Glamdring, a famous sword that Elrond noted once belonged to Turgon. Turgon was High King of the Elves in the First Age, ruling over the Elvish stronghold of Gondolin.

The Elfstone

Elessar

The Elfstone is one of the Elves’ lesser-known creations, but its great powers were rumored in many tales. Elessar means Elfstone in the Elvish language of Quenya. The Elfstone is most commonly known as Galadriel’s gift to Aragorn in The Fellowship of the Ring, but its origins remain mysterious. Although, some say it was made in Gondolin during the First Age and handed down. It was said to have healing and restorative powers.

Aragorn had some healing prowess himself, and it was never clear if any of this was due to the Elfstone.

This beautiful green stone was given to Aragorn as a promise of sorts. The stone had previously been in Arwen’s possession, so Galadriel knowingly gave it as a foreshadowing of Aragorn’s marriage to Arwen, although she wasn’t sure how things would turn out. Aragorn took Galadriel’s gift to heart and took the stone on as his royal namesake, naming himself Elessar at his coronation. Aragorn had some healing prowess himself, and it was never clear if any of this was due to the Elfstone.

The Phial Of Galadriel

Galadriel’s Gift To Frodo

Galadriel’s gift to Frodo was the Phial of Galadriel, and its bright, evil-repelling light saved him and Sam from certain death. The Phial of Galadriel contains water from Galadriel’s fountain. This mysterious liquid also fills the Mirror of Galadriel, so it clearly has some kind of magical power attached to it – if the word magical can be used. The water in the fountain holds some of the light of Eärendil’s star.

How Galadriel managed to capture the light of the star in the water isn’t certain, but the star itself is no less than one of Fëanor’s radiant Silmarils. A jewel bright enough to shine like a star in the sky millions of light-years away from Lothlórien, this is one of only three such gems in the world. With the other two lost, this remaining Silmaril fueled Galadriel’s most powerful magic in The Lord of the Rings.

Palantíri

The Seeing Stones

The Seeing Stones were also known as the palantíri, and they were unquestionably one of the Elves’ most powerful creations in The Lord of the Rings, with a couple of other trinkets able to rival them. These incredibly advanced technological feats enabled communication over long distances, amounting to Middle-earth’s version of the telephone, but with far more intriguing properties.

The palantíri were instrumental in the War of the Ring for both sides. Sauron used them to corrupt Denethor and Saruman, whereas Aragorn and Pippin managed to use them to the Fellowship’s advantage.

The palantíri were not necessarily easy to use, and mastering them required strength, practice, or both. The Stones enabled their users to see what was going on near to a linked stone. Not all stones were linked. They also had to face a certain direction in order to show a certain thing. However, the better a user was, the more clear and targeted their vision would be.

Silmarils

The Jewels Of Fëanor

In many ways, it is hard not to name the Silmarils as the most powerful objects of Elvish creation in Middle-earth. They did, after all, see to the cursing of one third of the Elves (the Noldor) and begin the War of the Jewels. When all is said and done, it is almost hard to see what good the Silmarils did, in the end. With one lost to the sea, and one lost to the earth, the only Silmaril still fueling good is in the sky with Eärendil, lending power to Galadriel’s fountain.

The jewels were so beautiful and bright that many who saw them became obsessed. Firstly, Fëanor, the creator of the Silmarils, was obsessed. Unfortunately, the Vala Morgoth also became obsessed and stole them. Fëanor and his sons swore an extremely problematic oath to recover the Silmarils, come what may. This oath led Fëanor and his kind to slay fellow Elves to steal ships in pursuit of the Silmarils. Once in Middle-earth, the bloodshed kept on coming.

The Elven-Rings

The Rings Of Power

Although the renowned Elven-rings may realistically take second place to the Silmarils, they display tangible proof of powerful accomplishments during the Second and Third Ages. The Silmarils may have had the most potential, but the Elven-rings’ potential may have been better realized. Sauron, in disguise, provided the lore necessary to complete the Elven-rings, and he had been one of the most powerful smiths of the Maiar – the Ainur order lower than the Valar.

The creation of the Elven-rings was guided by one of the greatest Maiar smiths, who was guided by the greatest smith in the universe – the Vala Aulë. However, the rings were actually made by Fëanor’s descendant, Celebrimbor. This makes sense, bearing in mind the greatness of the Silmarils. The Noldor were known for their skill in craft. Given these formidable origins, it is understandable that the rings had the power to fend off the decays of time, and that they preserved the Elves and their life on Middle-earth long after their sell-by date in The Lord of the Rings.
