Thelma, a surprise hit comedy, is one of 2024’s best hidden gems. June Squib plays 93-year-old Thelma, a determined grandmother who embarks on a journey to locate and take back money that was stolen from her by a phone scammer. As Thelma treks across Los Angeles, she learns that while she is still useful and capable at her age, it is okay to ask for help — and Squib’s performance as Thelma is a delightful watch.

It’s not often that a character like Thelma is given the chance to take the lead in a story because of Hollywood’s problems with ageism, but Squib delivers an engaging performance. As Thelma races across LA to locate her stolen money, all while trying to avoid her overprotective family, Squib’s portrayal of the character plays on the comedy of her absurd situation. At the same time, Squib embodies Thelma’s challenges, as a spunky woman who is frustrated by the complications of her age and a world that underestimates her.

Clint Eastwood’s latest drama Juror #2 hit streaming platforms after a short theatrical run. The crime drama stars Nicholas Hoult as Justin Kemp, a juror who is chosen for a high-profile murder trial. However, as evidence and details from the case boil to the surface, Justin must confront his own dark secret and possible involvement in the murder, making for a fascinating performance to watch on-screen.

Hoult shows Justin silently struggling throughout the film to come to terms with his secret and how to proceed as a jury member. Though Justin is far from perfect (battling a troubled past as an alcoholic and an unreliable partner to his wife), Hoult’s portrayal makes the audience feel sympathy for his dilemma as well as his hopes to better his life. While Hoult’s character keeps his emotions and troubles hidden under the surface for the majority of the film, his subtle performance is impactful.

Another powerful performance in 2024 came from Elizabeth Olson, who plays Christina in the Netflix drama film, His Three Daughters. Olson is just one of three estranged sisters who must meet in New York to prepare for the passing of their ailing father. Along the way, they struggle to reconnect due to competing personalities. Though Christina is the quieter than the other two (Rachel, played by Natasha Lyonne and Katie, played by Carrie Coon), her performance stands out.

Unlike her more combative siblings, Christina is the glue of the family, struggling to keep the peace while fighting to control her own sensitive nature. There are many moments of silence for Olson’s character as she fights to keep her sadness and frustration at bay (a result of being the closest to her father), yet Olson’s presence is commanding in her few emotional breakdown scenes. By the end, Christina sings a familiar song to her father and her sisters as he passes.

Saoirse Ronan returns to the screen to deliver a stirring performance as Rona in the poetic drama The Outrun. The film, which is based on the autobiographical book of the same name by Amy Liptrot, focuses on Rona’s sobriety journey after coming out of rehab. When she returns home to the Orkney Islands to recover, Rona must face demons from her past in order to move forward.

The Outrun is based on Amy Liptrot’s novel, but takes several liberties with the film, such as renaming the lead from “Amy” to “Rona.”

Ronan has earned ample critical acclaim and media attention for her performances in the past. Although The Outrun is yet to generate as much buzz as previous projects, her portrayal of Rona is just as brilliant. Over the course of the film, Rona undergoes a transformation from combative and depressive, to hopeful, taking a job in conservationism to better herself. However, along the way, Rona battles internally with the desire to do better while also wishing to return to her addictive tendencies. This is embodied masterfully by Ronan, whose emotional performance is inspiring to audience members.

Preeti Panigrahi’s performance in Shuchi Talati’s film, Girls Will Be Girls, is one of the most impressive of 2024. The film tells the story of Mira (Panigrahi) an ambitious and accomplished teenager who becomes the prefect of her strict boarding school. However, Mira begins to embrace her rebellious side, learning about young love, sexual expression, and reexamining her relationship with her mother.

Panigrahi’s performance is captivating, as she successfully embodies Mira’s change from the more restrained and traditional young girl, to an outspoken and unapologetic adolescent. Panigrahi captures the ups and downs of girlhood, from the euphoria of first love and curiosity of sexual awakening, to deep insecurities around her body and self-image. By the end, viewers feel sympathy for Mira, who faces sexism because of her newfound freedom.

One of the lesser-known horror films of the year is Cuckoo, Tilman Singer’s title about an American teenager, Gretchen (Hunter Schafer), who moves to the German Alps to be with her father after her mother’s death. However, she soon discovers that she is being hunted by a monster, threatening the safety of both her and her family. Cuckoo is exciting for the Euphoria star’s career, and Schafer’s performance is full of dramatic twists and turns.

Baltasar Kormákur’s film, Touch, is a tender romantic drama about the endurance of love and human connection. Touch follows Kristofer (played at a younger age by Palmi Kormákur), an ailing older man who is determined to locate the whereabouts of his first love, who went missing when he was a young man. Kormákur’s performance is intimate, capturing the excitement, mystery, and pain of a first love.

Beyond this, Kormákur’s is an exciting character to watch onscreen, as a young and rebellious free-thinker who challenges the conventions of conservative British society. His connection to the Takahashi family is beautifully woven throughout, and Kormákur’s chemistry with his love interest, Miko (Kôki), shines through the screen. Though Kormákur is only the younger version of Kristofer, his likable portrayal of the bright-eyed young man is one of the highlights of the film.

Justice Smith’s performance in the coming-of-age mystery is an emotional ride, as he plays Owen, a lonely and isolated teenager who struggles to find his place among his peers. Along the way, Owen reconnects with an old childhood friend over a strange late-night show known as “The Pink Opaque,” and her disappearance leaves him with more questions.
