10 Most Underrated Iron Man Movie Quotes

Iron Man was the character who started it all in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)
, and while he is often quoted, there are several more lines from the character that go underappreciated. Tony Stark may have begun his time in the MCU as an egotistical, eccentric billionaire, but he quickly changed his tune after a life-altering experience where he was kidnapped by men wielding his own weapons. The weapons manufacturer then resolved to use his incredible intelligence for the good of others, instead of making weapons of mass destruction.

As Iron Man, Stark became one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, defending the planet from extraterrestrial invasions and global threats. He also served as a leader and mentor, helping others on the team to see their full potential, and providing the means and opportunities to become heroes themselves. Stark is often credited as a source of inspiration, but there are even more hidden gems from the man in the metal suit that deserve some recognition.

This moment, between a mortal man and a god should clearly see one character stand out as more impressive than the other. But the fact is, Tony Stark has such a powerful presence, and an ability to command attention, that he easily controls the situation. This moment also cements the heroes as The Avengers, rather than simply having the codename, it becomes their purpose.

“It’s Good To Meet You, Dr. Banner…”

The Avengers (2012)

Bruce Banner and Tony Stark with SHIELD in The Avengers

When Stark and Bruce Banner first meet, the pair become fast friends. Both are inquisitive and curious minded geniuses who have managed to do extraordinary things in their fields. However, while Stark’s approach to science is often to try, fail, and try again, it resulted in him building the most advanced suit of weaponized armor ever made.

“It’s good to meet you, Dr. Banner. Your work on anti-electron collisions is unparalleled. And I’m a huge fan of how you lose control and turn into an enormous green rage monster.”

However, Banner’s work led to an incident that forever changed his physiology, and caused him to be far more reserved in his approach to experimentation.

While both men are extremely intelligent, their personalities reside on opposite sides of a spectrum. To Banner, Stark may appear reckless, and stubborn.

Meanwhile, to Stark, Banner seems uptight and overly cautios. The truth is obviously much closer to the middle, but when the men first meet, Stark applies his usual blunt humor and compliments Banner on his failed experiment, with genuine admiration of a thing that Banner still struggles ti accept.

“So, If I Were To Wrap This Up Tight With A Bow Or Whatever…”

Iron Man 3 (2013)

Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark having surgery at the end of Iron Man 3

At the end of Iron Man’s trilogy, the character has reached an incredible level of growth and maturity that did not seem possible for Tony Stark. While Stark makes his declaration that he is Iron Man at the end of the first movie, it isn’t until everything is removed in the threequel that his identity is really cemented. As he mentions in the above quote, this “cocoon” of the Iron Man suits helped him to grow from an immature arms dealer, to a real-life superhero.

“So, if I were to wrap this up tight with a bow or whatever, I guess I’d say my armor, it was never a distraction or a hobby: it was a cocoon. And now, I’m a changed man. You can take away my house, all my tricks and toys. One thing you can’t take away? I am Iron Man.”

And the fact that this line actually lays out what happens in the course of the film, including Stark losing his home and most of his suits, he is more capable and powerful than ever. Despite this being yet another iteration of his “I am Iron Man” declaration, this moment brings that idea home. And after this point, he stands out as one of the greatest heroes the world has ever seen.

“Actually, He’s The Boss. I Just Pay For Everything And Design Everything And Make Everyone Look Cooler.”

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Tony Stark and Ultron in Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron sees the team perform as a fully formed, functional superhero, after their debut in The Avengers. While the team had kinks to iron out initially, this film sees them settle into their roles more comfortably. While the leadership of the Avengers team could be argued, the reality is that Captain America is the leader of the heroes. In The Avengers, Tony took issue with this idea, but in Age of Ultron, he happily and hilariously accepts his role.

Despite not being the official leader, Tony plays a central role in the Avengers in several key areas. His funding, using his immense fortune to help bankroll the team, his engineering skills, designing and creating suits, and his flair. Tony is also playful and witty, which is highlighted here perfectly. It’s a great line and one that helps further refine the character.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

The cracks in the team also begin to appear in AoU when Stark and Steve Rogers appear to have different motivations behind their actions. Stark lives in fear of an enormous threat coming and hurting the ones he loves. Rogers believes in right and justice, and will fight with everything he has to ensure that those who need protection are protected. While both have noble intentions, it leads to very different approaches, and Stark’s anxieties directly lead to the creation of Ultron.

Despite this, it’s important to recognize what lies at the heart of Stark’s motives. He may act preemptively, and design things that could outrun his control, but Stark feels an enormous weight of responsibility on his shoulders. He has the knowledge and means to save so many people, so he does his best to do just that. But he also wants to build a safer future. His approach may not always be perfect, but his heart is in the right place.

“If We Can’t Accept Limitations, We’re No Better Than The Bad Guys.”

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

And evidently, by his next appearance, Stark learns his lesson when it comes to playing god. After creating Ultron, and seeing countless people suffer due to his failed experiment, Stark accepts responsibility and limitations in a whole new way. It does mean that he sides with the United Nations, and the Sokovia Accords over his friends like Steve Rogers, but again, Stark needs to act on what he believes is right.

Stark recognizes the limitless potential of heroes, both for good and for evil. Because the heroes have access to such powers, Stark agrees that there should be safeguards put in place, to avoid incidents like what happened with Ultron. Whether or not he was right to sign off on the Accords, Stark was doing what he believed to be right, and in the best interest of the world, not just his own ego.

“I’m Sorry, Earth Is Closed Today. You Better Pack It Up And Get Outta Here.”

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Even with all of his growth and development in the MCU, Stark never lost his sense of humor. In Avengers: Infinity War, when the Black Order lands on Earth, Stark, Banner, and Doctor Stephen Strange walk out to confront Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian in the streets of New York. These powerful aliens strike fear into the hearts of civilians, but this is not the first time Tony has wrestled with aliens, and it shows.

The clever wit, the sarcasm, and the general lack of fear all combine to reveal how comfortable and confident Tony has become, and how he has settled into the hero role as Iron Man.

He boldly calls out with the above line, and suits up ready to fight for the planet he loves alongside his friends. The clever wit, the sarcasm, and the general lack of fear all combine to reveal how comfortable and confident Tony has become, and how he has settled into the hero role as Iron Man. While things don’t go exactly according to plan, Stark’s confidence is key.

“It’s Not About How Much We Lost. It’s About How Much We Have Left. We’re The Avengers. We Gotta Finish This.”

Avengers: Endgame Trailer (2019)

Tony Stark saying I am Iron Man in Avengers Endgame

While this final line was actually used in the trailer for Avengers: Endgame, it is no less important or valuable as one of Tony Stark’s best lines in the MCU. Having worked together for years, growing as a team, fallen apart, losing everything and building back up from nothing, only to ultimately lose to Thanos at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, this line encapsulates Stark’s point of view going into the conclusion of the Infinity Saga.

As he mentioned before, if they can’t protect the Earth, then they will surely avenge it, and that is what comes to pass in Avengers: Endgame. Tony gives everything to protect the people that matter to him, and he finds ways to bend time and space in order to put things right, and when all is said and done, he puts his own life on the line to save everyone else. It’s a beautiful send-off for the iconic hero who started it all in the MCU, Iron Man.
