These 10 moments from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith changed the Star Wars galaxy forever. Revenge of the Sith is truly one of Star Wars’ best movies, not only because it includes many of the most beloved characters in the franchise, but also because it represents one of the most critical periods in the Star Wars timeline. Revenge of the Sith is massively important on micro levels (such as with Padmé’s death and the birth of Luke and Leia) and macro levels (with the fall of the Jedi and the rise of the Empire).

In fact, the plot points of Revenge of the Sith continue to have a lasting impact on Star Wars movies and TV shows. Even more recent shows, such as Ahsoka and Obi-Wan Kenobi, still draw a direct connection to the events of the movie. Of those many significant events, these 10 Revenge of the Sith moments most shaped the future of the Star Wars galaxy.

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith is undoubtedly a beloved and even fan-favorite movie, but these 11 reasons prove it’s Star Wars’ best.

10 Anakin Killing Count Dooku

With Count Dooku’s Death, Palpatine Needed A New Apprentice

Count Dooku

Anakin’s murder of Count Dooku was so much more than just another violent, heinous act on Anakin’s path to becoming Darth Vader. For one, this moment was distinct from the more egregious attack on the Tusken Raiders in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones because, with the Tusken Raiders, Anakin felt no remorse. In fact, he doubled down on what he’d done, telling Padmé he’d “slaughtered them like animals.”

With Count Dooku’s death, however, Anakin felt genuinely conflicted. Even as Palpatine was directly egging him on, Anakin hesitated, saying he shouldn’t kill him because it wasn’t the Jedi way. When he followed Palpatine’s orders anyway, it no doubt confirmed for Palpatine that his trap was complete and Anakin was ready to be fully turned. Importantly, Count Dooku’s death also required Palpatine to acquire a new Sith apprentice, so this was perfect timing for Anakin to be susceptible to Palpatine’s influences.

9 Palpatine Killing Mace Windu

The Confrontation With Mace Windu Sealed Anakin’s Fate

Mace Windu

Created By George Lucas Cast Samuel L. Jackson First Appearance Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace Alliance Jedi

One of the most interesting aspects of Anakin’s fall to the dark side is what comes immediately before. Anakin had already done numerous horrible things at this point, from killing the Tusken Raiders to using Force choke on multiple people throughout Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but he had yet to turn. Even when he was in the room with Mace Windu and Palpatine as they were having their confrontation, he was still aligned with the Jedi, enough so that he reminded Mace Windu of the Jedi way in an attempt to prevent him from killing Palpatine.

What seals Anakin’s fate is that Palpatine kills Mace Windu. Anakin had cut off Mace’s arm, which would have been enough to have him thrown from the Order, but he hadn’t intended to kill him or known Palpatine was going to kill him; arguably, he was just impulsively trying to stop Mace Windu killing Palpatine and ruining his chance at saving Padmé. However, as soon as Palpatine killed Mace Windu, Anakin knew he was too far gone and could never return to the life of a Jedi. This is why Anakin says, “What have I done?” after Mace Windu falls.

8 Anakin Skywalker Turning To The Dark Side

Anakin Becoming Darth Vader Changed Everything

Once Anakin had fallen to the dark side, it truly changed everything. With Anakin’s fall came a shocking number of changes to the larger galaxy, beginning with the murder of almost all the Jedi. Yes, Palpatine had already laid the plans for Order 66 long before Anakin turned to the dark side, but it was his fall specifically that kicked off this event. Presumably, Palpatine was specifically waiting for Anakin to turn before enacting his plan, meaning that Anakin joining the dark side was the catalyst for all the horrible events to come.

Anakin joining the dark side was the catalyst for all the horrible events to come.

It’s difficult to say what Palpatine’s plan could have looked like had Anakin not joined his side. Palpatine had long established that he would always find a replacement apprentice, which makes sense given the Sith Rule of Two requires a master and an apprentice. However, Anakin also had specific advantages that another apprentice likely wouldn’t have had. Most importantly, Anakin was still able to infiltrate the Jedi Temple, and his contributions to the eradication of the Jedi were considerable.

Of course, Order 66 is one of the most significant events in the entire Star Wars franchise, as it is the reason the Jedi were nearly completely wiped from the galaxy. In addition to the sheer loss of life, Order 66 has also fundamentally reshaped how the Jedi exist in Star Wars. After centuries of a Jedi Order in the High Republic Era, the fall of the Jedi during Order 66 has left a (so far) permanent scar; no new Order has been successfully created.

Disappointingly, even Luke Skywalker, one of the most powerful Jedi in Star Wars, was unable to create a new Jedi Order, although many had hoped that was what the sequel trilogy would reveal. Instead, Luke’s Jedi Temple had fallen, under circumstances alarmingly similar to the downfall of the prequel trilogy’s Jedi Order. Now, Rey’s upcoming Star Wars movie, rumored to be titled New Jedi Order, may finally bring about a new age of the Jedi. However, Order 66 has clearly done decades of damage.

6 Chancellor Palpatine Becoming Emperor

The Empire Would Shape Star Wars For Generations To Come

After securing an assassination attempt as his excuse for massacring the Jedi, Palpatine successfully turned the Republic into the Galactic Empire. This moment represented a massive shift in the Star Wars galaxy—one that the newest movies and shows are still grappling with. In fact, while shows like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian have depicted how the galaxy attempted to pick up the pieces following the fall of the Empire, it’s clear that those efforts were barely off the ground before Imperial remnants arose.

The upcoming Ahsoka season 2 may reveal what happens to those remnants, especially now that Thrawn will so clearly be making a grab for power. However, the sequels have already confirmed in two different ways that the Empire lingers. For one, the First Order arose just a few decades after the Empire had fallen, and it was obviously modeled off of the Empire. For another, Palpatine was resurrected, revealing that the Empire had never truly gone away after all.

5 Obi-Wan And Anakin’s Battle On Mustafar

This Revenge Of The Sith Lightsaber Fight Is One Of Star Wars’ Best

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Created By George Lucas Cast Alec Guinness , Ewan McGregor First Appearance Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope Alliance Jedi

Anakin and Obi-Wan’s battle on Mustafar is one of the most iconic events in all of Star Wars, and for good reason. This fight is choreographed beautifully and undoubtedly is one of the franchise’s most masterful duels. However, this battle was also significant because of its emotional weight; Anakin and Obi-Wan, who had for so long been brothers, were now fighting to the death.

The impact of this fight extended far beyond the former master and apprentice, though. This fight also ended in Anakin losing all his (flesh) limbs and being severely burned. In light of that, Anakin had to wear the Darth Vader suit the character is known for. This is so much more than a change in appearance; the Darth Vader suit, along with being symbolic, was something that caused Vader daily pain, sending him further and further to the dark side. Effectively, this fight and its outcome confirmed Vader’s extremely dark future to come.

4 Padmé Dying

Padmé’s Death Changed The Fates Of Many

Close

Padmé Amidala

While Padmé’s death was devastating, it also had a significant impact on the larger galaxy. For one, Padmé had been the great love of Anakin Skywalker, and her death fueled even more of Darth Vader’s anger and hatred. For another, Padmé had been a significant voice of the Republic, and she had devoted followers who believed in her and all she stood for. Perhaps the best evidence of that was the creation of the Amidalans, a group who worked against the Empire in Padmé’s name, led by her former handmaiden and close friend, Sabé.

Of course, Padmé’s death also meant that Luke and Leia were adopted by other families, growing up without one another and without any real knowledge of who they were. Interestingly, this may very well have kept them safe. Had Padmé lived, Vader surely would have come searching for her and her child (as they didn’t seem to know she was having twins). With her death, Padmé committed one final selfless act, protecting her children with the guise that she had died while pregnant.

3 Luke And Leia Being Born

Luke And Leia Were The Hope For The Future

Luke Skywalker

Even separate from their parents, the birth of Luke and Leia was a massive moment in the larger Star Wars history. Each of the twins had their own impact on the galaxy, and without them, it’s quite possible that first the Empire and then the First Order wouldn’t have fallen. Both twins took after their parents in unique ways, but it’s clear that Luke adopted more of Anakin’s Force sensitivity, and Leia inherited her mother’s political wisdom.

Luke adopted more of Anakin’s Force sensitivity, and Leia inherited her mother’s political wisdom.

Because of that, Luke was the hope for the future of the Jedi, and Leia was the hope for the future of the Republic. Although each suffered during the sequel trilogy, it’s undeniable that Luke and Leia’s efforts helped them to survive long enough that, hopefully, in this new era, they will continue on. Even so, it’s quite possible that without Luke and Leia, the Empire wouldn’t have been destroyed, suggesting that their birth was absolutely pivotal in Star Wars.

2 Obi-Wan Going With Luke To Tatooine

Obi-Wan Ensured Luke Became A Jedi

Once the twins were born, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Master Yoda agreed that they must be separated and hidden. Ultimately, this led to Obi-Wan agreeing to go with Luke to Tatooine, keeping watch over him from a distance. As the Obi-Wan Kenobi show and A New Hope confirm, it was really only because of this that Luke ever became a Jedi.

Without Obi-Wan, Luke might never have discovered much less developed his Force sensitivity, and he wouldn’t have learned the Jedi way or been equipped to re-establish the Jedi. In fact, given the Imperial Inquisitors and their efforts to kill Force-sensitive children, it’s possible Luke may not have even survived the Dark Times had Obi-Wan not decided to go with him to Tatooine and wait until he was old enough to be trained. This one relatively brief moment in Revenge of the Sith therefore had massive implications.

Without Obi-Wan, Luke might never have discovered much less developed his Force sensitivity.

1 Leia Being Adopted By Bail And Breha

Leia Became The Person She Was Because Of Her Parents

Leia Organa

Created By George Lucas Cast Carrie Fisher , Ingvild Deila , Vivien Lyra Blair First Appearance Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope Alliance Rebel Alliance, New Republic, Resistance

While plenty of attention is given to Luke going to Tatooine and remaining under the watchful eye of Obi-Wan, until the Obi-Wan Kenobi show, much less thought was often given to Leia’s life on Alderaan. In truth, Leia’s fate after birth was just as significant as Luke’s. As Obi-Wan Kenobi makes clear, Leia was deeply affected and shaped by her adoptive parents, Bail and Breha Organa, who instilled in her the values of compassion, confidence, bravery, and leadership.

It feels almost random that Bail decides to take the baby in Revenge of the Sith, yet this decision led to Leia becoming the incredible Rebel and Resistance leader she ultimately came to be. Like Luke’s influence on the future of the Jedi, it’s difficult to even imagine what the future of the Republic would have been without Leia. As with the other inclusions on this list, the impact of Leia’s adoption is just one example of how drastically these 10 moments from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith shaped Star Wars forever.
