There are many memorable quotes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but some of the franchise’s most iconic lines have achieved greater notoriety because of the ways in which actors have delivered them. Over its 16-year history, some of the most talented and recognizable actors in modern cinema have passed through Marvel Studios’ doors, bringing their screen presence and expert acting skills into the MCU. This has allowed some of cinema history’s most notable quotes to have originated as the most memorable quotes in the MCU.

Incredibly talented actors, such as Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Hopkins and Paul Bettany, among others, have produced some of the MCU’s most iconic lines. This has been thanks in part to their fantastic delivery of these beautifully-written moments. These deliveries mean that viewers can hear these quotes unfold when simply reading them, and, while this list will surely continue to grow as the MCU shows no sign of slowing down, some of these brilliant moments date back to the very beginning of the MCU in 2008’s Iron Man.

Jeff Bridges’ portrayal of Obadiah Stane was incredibly effective, delivering a brilliant human threat to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in the very first MCU movie, 2008’s Iron Man. While many of Stane’s lines were great, Bridges’ delivery of this now-iconic quote will go down in MCU history. Speaking on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast in September 2024, Bridges revealed that he gave Marvel Studios choices with this scene, noting “there’s maybe scenes where [he] didn’t quite blow up that much or blew up more,” but he liked the final version Marvel chose.
I like to, you know, us actors, we do a painting of the thing, and then give it to the editors and the directors, and they cut your painting up and make a collage out of it and put it in different orders… So, there’s maybe scenes where I didn’t quite blow up that much or blew up more or whatever, so when they’re in the editing room, they have a choice… I like that.

The impact of this scene has been felt throughout the MCU, particularly in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home when this moment was briefly seen again. Obadiah Stane shouts at Peter Billingsley’s Stark Industries scientist, William Ginter Riva, who then goes on to work for Jake Gyllenhaal’s Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio, after leaving Stark. No doubt, Williams’ treatment at the hands of Obadiah Stane had a hand in him leaving Stark and turning to villainy. One can only imagine how it felt to be in the room when Jeff Bridges yelled this fantastic line.
11 “He’s Adopted.”
Chris Hemsworth As Thor In The Avengers (2012)
Close
Chris Hemsworth has had some brilliant and memorable moments as Thor in the years since his debut in 2011, but one of his greatest and most simple was delivered in his sophomore movie, 2012’s The Avengers. When Bruce Banner notes that “you could smell crazy” on Loki, Thor urges him to be careful how he speaks, noting that “Loki is beyond reason, but he is of Asgard, and he’s my brother,” before being informed that “he’s killed 80 people in two days” by Natasha Romanoff. This allows Thor to reply, “he’s adopted,” contributing to one of The Avengers’ best exchanges.

Chris Hemsworth’s delivery of this line in The Avengers made the moment even funnier, combining innocence, strength, shame and brotherhood in only two words. This was also the perfect representation of Thor’s early comedic qualities that would be repeated to great success in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. As an alien being from across the cosmos, Thor has always been perhaps the most out-of-touch member of the Avengers, but this line proved that he could deliver human humor and stand tall among the likes of Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff, who are often effortlessly funny.

While Thor’s ability to show his more human qualities has grown over the years, Paul Bettany’s Vision did a pretty good job of doing this same thing in his very first MCU movie, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. After fighting alongside the Avengers to bring down the tyrannical artificial intelligence Ultron, destroying Sokovia in the process, Vision met with the final Ultron drone to finish the job. When the drone called Vision naive for stating it’s a “privilege” to be among humanity, Vision joked that he “was born yesterday” before blasting the drone with the Mind Stone.

Since Vision was an amalgamation of the personalities of JARVIS, Ultron, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, it’s very likely some of this quick wit came from Bettany’s voice career as JARVIS, picking up on Stark’s sarcastic humor. This quote, expertly delivered by Bettany, immediately allowed the audience to warm to Vision, seeing him as a comforting, strangely funny and endearingly awkward being. In the decade since, we’ve seen Vision grow and change massively, though hopefully he’ll retain his humor in the MCU’s upcoming Vision series, which will mark his return in 2026.

There were few opportunities to laugh in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as the movie acted as a beautiful memorial to the late Chadwick Boseman, who played T’Challa prior to his sudden passing in 2020. Even so, there were some moments of levity in the Phase 4 sequel, one of which saw Winston Duke’s M’Baku declare Danai Gurira’s Okoye to be a “bald-headed demon.” M’Baku has always been a source of comedy in the Black Panther franchise, while also being one of Wakanda’s most formidable protectors, and this was a fantastic example of his quick tongue.
M’Baku was teased to have become King of Wakanda at the end of
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
, so this will surely be explored more in
Black Panther 3
, which has recently been confirmed by Hollywood legend Denzel Washington, who’s been cast in the as-yet-unannounced sequel.
As two of Wakanda’s most notable citizens and warriors, the relationship between M’Baku and Okoye has been great to explore in the MCU. They can share jabs at each other, but, when it comes down to it, they are both supreme fighters and loyal Wakandans with a great deal of respect for the other. All of this can be felt in this line from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and even in Okoye’s subsequent little smirk, and the fact that M’Baku delivers this line slightly under his breath in the presence of Angela Bassett’s Queen Ramonda makes it even funnier.

8 “But You’re Not King!”
Anthony Hopkins As Odin In Thor (2011)
Close
When he debuted as Odin in 2011’s Thor, Anthony Hopkins was one of the most recognizable and acclaimed actors in the MCU. Hopkins made his start working with Laurence Olivier on stage in the 1960s, and used his theatrical and dramatic background to inform Odin, with this presence and power shining through in this one line shouted at Thor. While Hemsworth’s God of Thunder wanted to declare war on the Frost Giants for seemingly breaking into Asgard, Odin opposed, yelling that Thor was not yet Asgard’s King, which silenced him immediately.

Anthony Hopkins’ delivery, and the silence that followed this line, was chilling. At once, this quote showed Odin’s command of Asgard, strictness over his sons and compassion, as he refused to declare war on Jotunheim for the actions of a few. This moment also underlined Thor’s early hunger for war and desire to be the best, which softened following his experiences on Earth in Thor. “But you’re not King” was expertly delivered by Anthony Hopkins, and will go down in history as one of the most powerful and striking quotes in the MCU.

Set deep within the Multiverse Saga, Deadpool & Wolverine was perfectly primed to bridge the gap between the MCU and 20th Century Fox’s X-Men universe, though it also introduced variants from a number of other realities. One of these was Nicepool, a version of Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson who sported a more-armored costume, had no scarring, wore his hair longer and traveled with a canine companion, Dogpool. Nicepool proved he, too, could gently tap the fourth wall by stating “The Proposal” to the camera in one of Deadpool & Wolverine’s most hilarious and memorable moments.
Of course, Nicepool’s fourth wall break referenced 2009’s The Proposal, which starred Ryan Reynolds as the assistant to Sandra Bullock’s domineering Canadian editor-in-chief of a New York book publisher who is roped into a fake engagement in order for her to acquire a visa renewal. Reynolds’ gentle delivery of this line displayed Nicepool’s calm and collected nature perfectly, and the subsequent few seconds’ pause made this moment even funnier. Deadpool & Wolverine’s The Proposal reference was brilliant, standing out as one of the movie’s best lines, in competition with many others.

Paul Bettany As Vision In WandaVision (2021)

Paul Bettany’s Vision has taken on many forms during his decade in the MCU, so it makes sense that more than one of his quotes would be considered perfectly-delivered and incredibly memorable. While his Avengers: Age of Ultron quip was funny, this moment in 2021’s WandaVision was heartbreaking and powerful, delivering completely different textures. As he was beginning to realize that something was wrong about their life in Westview, Vision confronted Wanda Maximoff, noting that it wasn’t up to her what he knew about their home and accusing her of lying to him.

At this time, Vision was only beginning to understand that his wife had constructed a false world for them and their growing family to reside in. When he asks what’s outside Westview and Wanda responds with “you don’t want to know,” Vision snaps, yelling “you don’t get to make that choice for me” with a tone that showcases his raw emotion, loss of patience and desperation. 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marked James Gunn’s final project with Marvel Studios, but it was certainly one to remember, and this was thanks in part to Chukwudi Iwuji’s sinister new MCU villain, the High Evolutionary. The High Evolutionary’s remorseless experimentation on living beings, including Rocket Raccoon, was a product of his god complex, which was put front-and-center when he claimed that he “stepped in” to replace a nonexistent god. This line, delivered by Iwuji with ferocity and power, is hard to forget, underlining the High Evolutionary’s entire motivation.
Chukwudi Iwuji previously worked with James Gunn in
Peacemaker
season 1, in which he portrayed the leader of Project Butterfly and infamous black ops agent Clemson Murn, who was revealed to be a rogue Butterfly himself, Ik Nobe Llok.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made many changes to the High Evolutionary’s Marvel Comics backstory, but managed to retain the villain’s intimidating persona and obsession for genetic manipulation. Seeing the High Evolutionary scream that “there is no god, that’s why [he] stepped in” in the face of Miriam Shor’s Recorder Vim was terrifying, especially since this was followed by the High Evolutionary emitting an explosion that left him as the sole survivor. The villain’s power and lack of empathy is truly haunting, so the High Evolutionary’s possible future in the MCU is exciting.

Over the duration of Agatha All Along’s first five episodes, Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness slowly pieced together the true identity of Joe Locke’s sigil-protected “Teen,” culminating in her declaring him to be “so much like [his] mother” at the end of episode 5, “Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power.” The subsequent episode revealed that Billy Maximoff’s disembodied soul had entered the recently-deceased body of Locke’s William Kaplan, allowing him to be reincarnated and set out to find his missing brother, Tommy. Agatha All Along’s finale revealed Billy even created the Witches’ Road to accomplish this mission.

Wanda erected the Hex around Westview, New Jersey, to get what she wanted from life in WandaVision, and Billy did exactly the same with the Witches’ Road in Agatha All Along. “Teen” being outed as Billy Maximoff’s Wiccan was a brilliant reveal, enhanced by Kathryn Hahn’s incredibly creepy and captivating delivery of this line that instantly put her back in a position of power following her murder of Alice Wu-Gulliver.

While the Scarlet Witch’s WandaVision villain has produced one of the most well-delivered lines in the MCU, so has Wanda Maximoff herself. In fact, so many of Wanda’s lines have become so iconic that it’s hard to narrow it down, but her exchange with Josh Brolin’s Mad Titan, Thanos, during the Battle of Earth in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame carried a great deal of power, emotion and intensity that makes it the best. Returning five years after the death of Vision, though mere moments for her, the Scarlet Witch confronted 2014’s Thanos, stating that his variant “took everything” from her.

Wanda Maximoff had no way of knowing this version of Thanos wasn’t the same one who killed Vision in Avengers: Infinity War, which likely made the villain’s retort of “I don’t even know who you are” even more heartbreaking. She didn’t let it phase her, however, as she simply noted, “You will,” before showing off her strength by almost destroying Thanos singlehandedly. This moment was so powerful and striking, and bridged the gap between Vision’s Infinity War death and the events of WandaVision perfectly, with Elizabeth Olsen filling these few moments with fire and heart.

Kenneth Tigar As German Old Man In The Avengers (2012)

It’s not only the MCU’s main characters that have produced the best-delivered quotes in the franchise’s history, but one of the greatest was actually delivered in one of the franchise’s smallest roles. Kenneth Tigar had a tiny part in 2012’s The Avengers as “German Old Man,” a man who stands up to Loki after he makes Stuttgart citizens kneel before him. When Loki claims humans will always kneel, Tigar’s character proudly states, “Not to men like you.” Loki retorts that there are no men like him, and the German Old Man states, “There are always men like you.”

American actor Kenneth Tigar is best known for his television roles in projects including
L.A. Heat, Cheers, Dallas, Growing Pains, House of Cards
and
The Man in the High Castle
, among many others.
Such a simple exchange carries a huge weight, as a German citizen stands up against a man trying to subjugate them. This is even more powerful as Tigar’s character is possibly old enough to remember the events of World War II, and this called back to Abraham Erskine’s line in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, which saw him note that people forget “the first country the Nazis invaded was their own.”This line was beautifully delivered with pride, determination and confidence, enough to even anger the Asgardian God of Mischief before the Avengers arrived to apprehend him.

Of course, the best-delivered line has to have come from Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, who was the MCU’s face from his debut in 2008’s Iron Man to his emotional sacrifice in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Both these projects saw Stark declare, “I am Iron Man,” at two pivotal moments in his life, and, both times, this line was delivered to an effect that is hard to replicate. In Iron Man, this marked the final line of the movie before the post-credits scene, introducing Stark to the world as Iron Man, while it had the opposite impact in Avengers: Endgame.

Tony Stark once again delivered this iconic line after Thanos stated that he is “inevitable” after seemingly claiming the completed Infinity Gauntlet and snapping his fingers in Avengers: Endgame. It was revealed that Stark had moved the Stones onto his own armor, allowing him to declare his superhero moniker proudly and win the day, sacrificing his own line in the process. The simplicity of this well-delivered quote marked a beautiful, heart-breaking and bone-chilling full-circle moment for Robert Downey Jr., and one can only hope Marvel Studios doesn’t ruin it when he debuts as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
