Many of the best nature documentaries explore the relationship between animals and humanity, but few explore when this partnership is harmonious and symbiotic quite like 2019’s Honeyland. Directed by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov, Honeyland was filmed over three years, following Macedonian beekeeper, Hatidže Muratova, whose peaceful way of life is disrupted when a nomadic family arrives and exploits the bees for commercial gain. Honeyland blends themes of sustainability, tradition, and human impact on the environment. The powerful message about coexisting with nature earned Honeyland critical acclaim, including nominations for both Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature at the Academy Awards.

The film follows several feline personalities as they roam the streets, weaving their way through markets, cafés, and homes, while touching the lives of the people they encounter. Directed by Mark Linfield and Alastair Fothergill, Monkey Kingdom has a lot going for it beyond being a showcase of stunning footage of monkeys. This nature documentary is narrated by Tina Fey, with her unique vocal talents adding a refreshing dose of humor and warmth. While examining primates in a broader sense too, Monkey Kingdom specifically follows a clever toque macaque named Maya as she raises her newborn in the ancient ruins of Sri Lanka and faces social hierarchies within her troop and challenges from the surrounding jungle. Combining stunning cinematography with engaging narration, Monkey Kingdom brings the drama of the animal world to life in a way that is both educational and entertaining.

The fact that the oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface is something many people are aware of. Just how much of the oceans scientists have been able to explore is significantly less, but The Blue Planet does show off some of what has been discovered. The Blue Planet took more than five years to make. Between gathering footage, and making sure everything was factually correct, the amount of effort put into this documentary was enormous and more than paid off. The Blue Planet, and its sequel, are considered some of the best nature documentaries about the ocean.

Netflix is creating more and more originals as it continues to gain popularity. While it does seem to have lots of documentaries on off-beat topics, Netflix doesn’t have a lot of originals when it comes to the best nature documentaries. However, Our Planet is one addition that stands with the best from the Discovery Channel. The episodes are broken up according to habitat, from forests to the coastal seas, the show explores all parts of the world. Filmed over four years, the show explores the beauties and wonders that each habit has to offer and brings a unique look to these ecosystems that viewers have been shown many times.

For fans that wanted more after watching The Blue Planet, almost a decade later they were gifted The Blue Planet II. While the first documentary focused more on the information and details of ocean life and all within it, the second season covered mankind’s influence on the oceans. Not only did the documentary have moments that were never before seen, but the soundtrack behind the film was created by the unexpected duo of Radiohead and Hans Zimmer. The music composition combined with the footage that was caught created an epic sequel about the ocean. This was a BBC series that aired in America on BBC America, AMC, IFC, Sundance, and We tv.

BBC ended up with one of the best nature documentaries ever made.
