5 Theories About Metal Sonic’s Origin & Creator After Sonic The Hedgehog 3’s Post-Credits Scene

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Sonic the Hedgehog 3!

Metal Sonic was finally introduced in the post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and here are five theories about the character’s origins and who created him. Metal Sonic seems to be the villain of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s post-credits scene showing off an army of Metal Sonics as well as featuring the debut of Amy Rose. However, Metal Sonic’s robotic nature means that he had to be created by someone. So, here are the five best theories as to where Metal Sonic will come from in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continued the live-action movie series’ trend of introducing new characters in post-credits scenes, with the third film actually introducing two. After accidentally running all the way to New York, Sonic finds himself being attacked by a robotic version of himself. Things become much worse when Sonic realizes that there isn’t just one, with him instead having to face off against an army of Metal Sonics. Luckily, Amy Rose jumps in just in time to smash the robots with her hammer, saving Sonic and setting up the story of Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Theory: Ivo Robotnik Created Metal Sonic In Secret

After Faking His Death In Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Close

Jim Carrey’s Ivo Robotnik has been the villain in each Sonic the Hedgehog so far, and if he is behind Metal Sonic’s creation, he could continue this trend in the fourth film. As Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reveals, Robotnik went into hiding after he seemingly died in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Although he doesn’t seem to have been up to much, he has worked on a few inventions, and it is possible that Metal Sonic is one of them.

Robotnik’s obsession with Sonic means that it only makes sense for him to have tried to recreate Sonic’s powers, albeit in a robotic form. Doctor Robotnik’s possible death at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 could have triggered some sort of contingency plan, unleashing the Metal Sonics into the world. However, it could also be that Robotnik secretly survived, with him being behind the metallic army.

Theory: Gerald Robotnik Created Metal Sonic As Shadow’s Backup Plan

He Modeled Metal Sonic After Shadow

Close

Ivo isn’t the only Robotnik who could have created Metal Sonic, as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduces an entirely new candidate: Gerald Robotnik. Gerald Robotnik was the mind behind Project Shadow, with him experimenting on Shadow the Hedgehog until G.U.N. blew up the facility that he was being housed in. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reveals that Gerald had 50 years to come up with Metal Sonic, with him potentially using his time after prison to create the machines.

Rather than modeling Metal Sonic after Sonic, Gerald could have modeled him after Shadow. After all, Gerald Robotnik knows Shadow inside and out, and an army of Metal Sonics would be helpful if the Ultimate Life Form decided to go rogue.

Theory: Agent Stone Creates Metal Sonic After Robotnik’s Death

Taking Up Robotnik’s Villain Title

Close

One popular theory in the wake of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is that Agent Stone could be inspired to take up Robotnik’s mantle after his death in the Eclipse Canon. After all, Agent Stone has been around Robotnik for years, meaning that he has probably absorbed a lot of Robotnik’s robotics knowledge. It could be that Agent Stone immediately began developing Metal Sonic after Robotnik’s death in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, explaining why they only pop up in the film’s post-credits scene.

Theory: GUN Created Metal Sonic In Secret

In Case Sonic Turned Against Them

Close

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 proves that the Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.) isn’t as altruistic as they seemed, with the film highlighting some dark secrets from their past. It could be that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will see Sonic learn that G.U.N. developed Metal Sonic, with the army acting as a contingency plan in case the blue blur turned against the organization. After all, Sonic does break into G.U.N. headquarters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, with this possibly being what triggered the organization to send the Metal Sonics after him.

Theory: Eggman Nega Sent Metal Sonic From The Future

Utilizing Sonic CD’s Time Travel Story

Close

Both Metal Sonic and Amy Rose originate from Sonic CD, a video game that heavily features the concept of time travel. If Sonic the Hedgehog 4 wants to continue this theme, it could reveal that rather than being developed by Ivo Robotnik, Metal Sonic was developed by Eggman Nega. In the games, Eggman Nega is a descendant of Eggman, with him coming from the future to stop Sonic. This would explain why a new villain is obsessed with Sonic, as well as allowing Jim Carrey to play another Robotnik, making this the perfect reveal for Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
