A Minecraft Movie’s 10 Biggest Changes To The Video Game

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for A Minecraft Movie!

A Minecraft Movie is an odd adaptation of the Minecraft video game, with the film making 10 massive changes to how the original game plays. Minecraft is one of the most popular video games of all time, with all kinds of people from around the world being incredibly familiar with the game’s world and rules. Because of this, most viewers were able to recognize the biggest changes that A Minecraft Movie made to the original game, and here are 10 of the biggest ones.

Despite being an adaptation of Minecraft, A Minecraft Movie is about much more than just the world of the video game. A Minecraft Movie sees a band of human characters find a portal to the Overworld, connecting their Earth to the world of Minecraft. After becoming trapped in the Overworld, the characters must help fellow Earthling Steve defeat the forces of the Nether and find a way home. Along the way, they discover all kinds of rules about how the Overworld works, although only some of them align with the rules of the original Minecraft game.

Earth Is Another Dimension Alongside The Overworld & The Nether

But The End Isn’t Featured

Close

One of the biggest changes to the game in A Minecraft Movie is that it adds another dimension: Earth. In the Minecraft video game, there are only three dimensions, with those being the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. The End isn’t explored in A Minecraft Movie, with the movie instead making Earth its third dimension. Humans from Earth are able to access the Overworld with the use of a blue orb, with Steve and the rest of their characters leaving their home dimension with the orb’s help.

Alongside adding a new dimension, A Minecraft Movie also adds a new portal. The portal from Earth to the Overworld is blue, with it looking a lot more like the portal to the Nether than the portal to the End. However, when the orb’s glass casing is broken, the portal to Earth closes, with it not reopening until the humans find another glass casing and reunite the two objects.

Characters Don’t Respawn In A Minecraft Movie’s Universe

At Least It Is Implied They Don’t

Close

Although it isn’t explicitly stated in A Minecraft Movie, another big change in the movie is that characters seemingly don’t respawn. In the game, when a player character dies, they drop their items and are sent back to their last spawn point. None of the humans in A Minecraft Movie actually die, but the fact that Steve and the gang are scared of death signals that dying is permanent in the universe of A Minecraft Movie.

It could be argued that respawning is a non-diegetic aspect of the original game, with the characters not literally coming back to life in-universe. However, A Minecraft Movie makes several other gameplay elements into diegetic parts of the Overworld, so it would be weird to omit respawning while keeping things like how blocks are placed and floating item drops.

Pink Sheep Are The Most Common Version

The White Sheep Are Barely Seen

Close

Another incredibly odd change that A Minecraft Movie makes has to do with the movie’s sheep. In the original Minecraft game, pink sheep are incredibly rare, with them only having a 0.164% chance of spawning. Instead, white sheep are the most common type, with black, brown, and gray sheep also being found fairly often. In A Minecraft Movie, pink sheep are the most commonly seen sheep type. They are so common that Steve is even able to make a house entirely out of pink wool. Other colors of sheep are only seen in the background of shots, with pink sheep only ever getting the focus.

A Minecraft Movie’s Flowers Are Blocky

Unlike The Flowers From The Games

Close

An incredibly minor change that A Minecraft Movie makes has to do with its flowers. There are all types of flowers in the original game, with players being able to pluck them and place them in different positions. However, every flower in Minecraft are non-solid items that lack depth, with them being pixel art rather than blocky. While some of these flowers are seen in A Minecraft Movie, the Overworld also features blocky, solid flowers. This change is never explained, with them simply acting as decorations that aren’t interacted with throughout the film.

Almost Anything Can Be Crafted In The Overworld

The Movie Is Full Of Original Items

Close

Crafting is half of what makes Minecraft what it is, and A Minecraft Movie makes a big change to it. In the Minecraft video game, there are all kinds of craftable items. However, there is a finite number. Only certain combinations of items can be used to generate craftable items, with there being a set number of formulas. In A Minecraft Movie, humans can craft seemingly anything. Without following a formula, Jason Momoa’s character is able to craft two buckets connected by a chain, something that isn’t seen in Minecraft.

On top of that, Henry uses items that he brought from Earth to create a unique weapon: a tater tot launcher. This is not only a unique item, but it also uses unique items in its recipie, as things like a paperclip and a tater tot obviously can’t be used in crafting in the original game.

A Minecraft Movie Adds A Golem Of Swiftness

Using An Item From Minecraft Dungeons

Minecraft Iron Golem Mob to Farm for Iron Ingot Resource at Villages

A Minecraft Movie not only adds new items, with it also adding a new type of mob. The characters in A Minecraft Movie are introudced to Iron Golems fairly early on in the film, with them being told that the defensive mob protects villagers. Later in the film, the characters decide to make an army of Golems to fight off the forces of the Nether. While most of these Golems are Iron Golems, Henry uses the Boots of Swiftness (an item exclusive to the spinoff game Minecraft Dungeons) to create a Golem of Swiftness, a superfast Iron Golem that isn’t present in the game.

Endermen Spawn In Woodland Mansions

On The Top Floor In The Movie

Close

Interestingly, a Woodland Mansion is one of the key locations seen in A Minecraft Movie. The characters must go there in order to find an item that will help them get home, with them knowing they are walking into dangerous territory. Before heading into the Woodland Mansion, Steve breaks down the threats that they will face. While he talks about Pillagers and Vindicators, Steve also explains that Endermen appear on the third floor. In Minecraft, Endermen do not spawn in Woodland Mansions, with this being an addition to the movie.

3

Portals Are Much Bigger In A Minecraft Movie

They Tower Over The Characters

Close

The portal to Earth and the Nether portal are both prominently featured in 2025’s A Minecraft Movie, although they do feature a big difference from the games. In Minecraft, Nether portals can be as small as 4 blocks by 5 blocks, with this being the most commonly seen size. However, the Nether portal seen in A Minecraft Movie is absolutely massive, with it towering over the main characters.

2

The Piglins Are Led By Malgosha

She Is The Film’s Main Villain

Close

In Minecraft, Piglins are a real type of enemy, with them being a mob that spawns in the Nether. They also zombify if they go into the Overworld, as the movie explains. However, the big change that A Minecraft Movie makes has to do with the addition of Malgosha. Malgosha is the main villain in A Minecraft Movie, and while she is depicted as the head of the Piglins, she doesn’t appear in the original game at all. Malgosha is an original character, with her being created for the film.

Nether Mobs Can Come To The Overworld

Through The Nether Portal

Close

The big threat in A Minecraft Movie comes when the forces of the Nether come to the Overworld, with them attempting to block out the sun. The characters have to face off against Piglins, Ghast, and more in the Overworld. However, this wouldn’t happen in the game, as mobs from the Nether can’t enter the Overworld without player intervention. Interestingly, A Minecraft Movie does stay true to the fact that Piglins in the Overworld begin to zombify.
