Developed and published by Capcom, the game was originally released on Nintendo 3DS in 2013 and later on iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. The team aimed to make a huge impact with this installment, focusing on reviving the trial system. They used 3D graphics while retaining the look of earlier games and incorporated localization into the development. Critics praised the audio, visuals, and characters, but some criticized the game for not always accepting logical inputs during trials. Despite this, it sold well compared to previous games in the series.

In Dual Destinies, players will control three defense attorneys: Naruhodō, Apollo Justice, and Athena Sykes. Their goal is to solve the case and prove their clients’ innocence.
The game is mainly divided into two parts: Investigation and Trial. During the investigation, players need to find evidence at the crime scene, talk to witnesses, present evidence and move between different locations. Apollo’s “Perception” ability helps to detect lies visually, while Phoenix’s “Mind Lock” can reveal hidden truths.
During the trial, players cross-examine witnesses, ask for more information, and present evidence to uncover contradictions. False evidence can reduce the judge’s confidence, potentially leading to a game over. Athena’s “emotional matrix” can detect conflicting emotions in testimony and help uncover the truth. Finally, players use “re-visualization” to reason and draw conclusions.
Ace Attorney Dual Destiny
The story of Dual Destinies takes place one year after the events of the previous game, Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice. The justice system is in trouble, and false accusations and fabricated evidence have become commonplace. Defense attorney Wright Phoenix regains his badge and recruits Athena Sykes, a young lawyer with a talent for psychology, to join his agency along with Apollo Justice.
Under the supervision of Detective Bobby Fulbright, Phoenix, Apollo, and Athena tackle several cases. They defend Mayor Damien Tenma, who is accused of murdering Councilman Rex Kyubi, and reveal that the real murderer is Tenma’s assistant Florent L’Belle. Later, Athena defends her friend Juniper Woods, who is accused of murdering a teacher, and reveals that the real culprit is another teacher named Aristotle Means.

After an explosion at the space center, Apollo’s friend Clay Tran is found dead, and Athena and Apollo defend an astronaut named Solomon Starbuck. During the trial, a bomb explodes and Apollo is injured, but they reveal the real bomber to be bomb squad expert Ted Tonut. Feeling involved, Apollo investigates further, while Phoenix takes over Solomon’s case to prove his innocence. However, new evidence links Athena to Clay’s murder, leading to her arrest.
Phoenix delved into the murder of Athena’s mother seven years earlier, which led to Kuroba’s conviction. The day before Kuroba’s execution, his sister took hostages and demanded a retrial. With the help of Edgeworth, Phoenix proved Athena and Kuroba’s innocence and revealed the real culprit to be Phantom, an international spy posing as Fulbright. With the help of the team, Phoenix unmasked Phantom and ended the Dark Ages for the law.
