Adam Devine’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

Adam Devine
has been steadily acting since he first started touring in the Mail Order Comedy stand-up group and his best movies and TV shows often have a focus on comedy. Some of his projects, however, show that he is much more than an actor who can land a good joke. Devine has proven himself adept as a complete entertainer with singing, dancing, voice over work, comedy, and drama in his projects.

Most recently, he has found success on the small screen with the HBO series The Righteous Gemstones. With the final season premiering in 2025, however, Devine will have time to head back to the big screen if he so chooses. Much of his work outside of the series in recent years has involved lending his voice to animation or podcasts, likely because it’s a little easier to schedule while filming a TV series. Some of his best work is likely still to come, but for now, these movies and TV shows fit the bill.

Because The Lego Batman Movie is fantastic in its own right, it has to appear among Adam Devine’s best movies. The truth, however, is that Devine’s voice role in the movie is a very small one, so it cannot be the best, despite being the best reviewed movie in Devine’s portfolio.

The Lego Batman Movie sees Batman anger the Joker by telling him he does not need the villain. It also sees Bruce Wayne accidentally agree to adopt Dick Grayson when he is not paying attention to a conversation. Those two tipping points combine to kick of the story in which the Joker gets himself exiled to the Phantom Zone in order to recruit other villains and Dick Grayson becomes Batman’s sidekick Robin.

Devine appears in the movie as The Flash, one of the heroes that Batman would team up with. The focus here, however, is on Batman’s journey to embracing the fact that he has a family and that he and the Joker need one another to perform their respective functions in Gotham. Though The Flash and Superman appear, they are not the focus, though they would have likely been given a lot more screen time if the sequel, which would have seen a team-up of more heroes, had been made.

Adam Devine’s House Party is unique among Devine’s movies and TV shows. He is not just an actor in the project. He is also one of the creators of the television series as well as a writer and executive producer on the show. With so much creative control, this is likely the project that is closest to Devine’s own interests, though it’s not the absolute best showcase of his acting skills.

The initial premise of the series is that Devine is hosting a house party in every episode and several comedians are visiting for it. Each episode combines scripted elements with stand-up from the comedians. There are new comedians in every episode as well as new storylines so episodes do not have to be watched in order. The house party premise is mostly abandoned after the first season, however, since season 2 is filmed in a bar in New Orleans and season 3 is filmed in a resort in Hawaii.

Devine is able to demonstrate his great comedic skills here, but the real showcase is the rotating cast of comedians, many of whom are friends of Devine in real life. If it was more of a showcase for his own comedy, it would rank higher as an acting project for him. It’s still an impressive show that he put together.

The Intern is an interesting fusion of comedy and drama. While the movie itself is a comedy, and the supporting cast is populated by comedic actors, the main roles require some heavier dramatic efforts. Devine is a supporting cast member in the movie, while Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway take on the main roles.

The movie follows a man in his 70s, a widower, who gets back into the workforce after long being retired. He becomes a senior intern at a fashion website where he bonds with the CEO, who happens to be a workaholic, and teaches the younger members of the company some of his old-school methods.

Robert DeNiro’s quiet performance in the movie (rightfully) gets most of the attention, and his character is the most fleshed out of the script. The movie examines ageism and gender differences in high-powered careers, but it does so with plenty of comedy and heart. The comedy largely comes from the ensemble at the company, which includes Devine’s character. Devine’s Jason and other younger employees get to have snappy one-liners, but they also get to show a willingness to learn from those who have come before them.

Without characters like Devine’s Jason, there is not a mirror for DeNiro’s and Hathaway’s characters to look into.

Like Adam Devine’s House Party, Workaholics aired on Comedy Central during its run. Also like the other series, it was co-created by Devine. Devine created the show alongside Blake Anderson, Anders Holm, and Kyle Newacheck, his friends and members of the Mail Order Comedy group with him. All four also worked as writers and producers on the show and eventually formed their own production company together. The show is able to draw on the real chemistry of the group as a result.

Devine, Anderson, and Holm star as a group of friends who met in college and have continued their college friendship (and partying ways) into adulthood after deciding to drop out of college. They share a home, a drug dealer, and all work at the same telemarketing company.

While critics were divided on the show while it aired, The AV Club described it best when they called it “a more adult version of Ed, Edd n Eddy.” What sells the show is the absurdity of the humor and the willingness of the actors to commit to it. Devine and his friends are shameless in their desire to make others laugh, and that makes them all likable, even in the most ridiculous of storylines.

While much of the praise for the show has gone to the animation and the scripts, Devine and the rest of the cast certainly deserve equal praise…

Dr. Seuss is known for classic children’s books. Many of those books have been successfully adapted for the screen, but not many of the adaptations have attempted to change the source material in the same way as this animated series. Green Eggs And Ham crafted a fun and funny adventure series that was inspired by two Seuss books, but it was not constrained by what initially appeared on the page, and that’s part of what makes it work.

The series sees Sam-I-Am rescue a chickeraffe from the zoo and end up on an adventure with Guy-Am-I and a little girl named E.B. and her mother. While they are working together to save the chickeraffe, they’re being pursued by a poacher in the first season. The second season sees the group get embroiled in a spy operation.

Devine’s Sam-I-Am is hyperactive and, of course, a green eggs and ham fan. All along on their adventure, he is encouraging his new friends to try the food, which is the biggest way the show is able to link to the original book. Devine is perfect for voice over work as he is a very expressive actor who has long been able to do impressions and tone changes in his comedic work.

While much of the praise for the show has gone to the animation and the scripts, Devine and the rest of the cast certainly deserve equal praise for bringing the characters to life in a new way.

The Final Girls is a meta take on slasher movies, though not in the same way that the Scream franchise is. It sees a young woman, whose mother was the star of an 80s horror slasher, grieving her loss after a car accident. When she and her friends end up transported into the film during a fire at a movie screening, they interact with the characters to attempt to find their way out. It allows the young woman another chance with her mother, providing an intricate look at grief, and it also deconstructs horror movie tropes.

The premise of the movie was inspired by writer Joshua John Miller’s own experiences. His father was a cast member in The Exorcist, and he grew up, like the movie’s protagonist, with a parent who was iconic because of their role in a horror movie. He and co-writer M.A. Fortin decided to explore what that same idea would be like when coupled with grief and being trapped in the movie itself.

Devine’s character is not one of the young adults who ends up trapped in the movie but is instead one of the slasher movie characters. Kurt is very much a stereotypical camp counselor in an 80s slasher flick, and Devine does an exceptional job at bringing him to life, right down to his one-track mind when it comes to sex and his panic at a killer being on the loose.

The movie was a film festival darling, earning numerous nominations around the circuit. It was also nominated for three Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

Adam Devine met his now-wife Chloe Bridges on the set of The Final Girls.

Devine gets to be in another very meta movie, though this time, the storyline takes on romantic comedies instead of horror flicks. He also costars with his frequent collaborator Rebel Wilson. Isn’t It Romantic marks the fourth time the two have played love interests. They also appear in Workaholics, Pitch Perfect, and Pitch Perfect 2 together.

Natalie (Wilson) grew up loving romantic comedies, but as an adult, has become jaded, disliking the clichés found in them. When she is mugged and hits her head in the subway, she finds herself suddenly living in one. Her assistant (Bety Gilpin) at work is now her nemesis. A wealthy client (Liam Hemsworth) in the real world seems like the perfect rom-com love interest. Her best friend (Devine) at work falls for a model (Priyanka Chopra) and “yoga ambassador.” She tries to fight the cliches but eventually embraces them to learn more about herself.

Isn’t It Romantic divided some critics who lamented that it employed the very clichés it initially railed against. As the movie points out, however, rom-coms are like comfort food, and there is a reason those clichés work when they’re employed with a fun story and believable actors. Though Devine is more of a supporting player here as this is thoroughly Wilson’s starring vehicle, he makes for a convincing leading man instead of being the comic relief, where he is often employed.

The entire cast has great chemistry and genuinely look like they’re having a good time in the cheesier rom-com scenes.

The Righteous Gemstones has proven to be a surprise hit with critics. The series follows a family who run a megachurch on their misadventures that often stray far from the path of God they preach.

The Gemstones are led by patriarch Eli (John Goodman). The widower is in charge of their church and most of their activities. Their work has made them all incredibly wealthy as their schemes bring them more profit than anything else. Eli’s three children are all wealthy and have their own religious schemes hoping to bring in more money.

For example, Devine’s Kelvin is the youngest sibling of the group. While he is a youth pastor at the church, he also starts a Christian bodybuilding group during the run of the show. He also finds himself kidnapped more than once and in the middle of blackmailing and murder mysteries. The outlandish storylines are what largely inform the comedy of the show while the family connections help to bring the pathos to the series.

Devine is fantastic as Kelvin, and this is one of his most critically acclaimed projects to date. Though Kelvin means well, his character is also portrayed as incredibly selfish and focused on his own wealth and how much he wants his father’s approval. He also hides his same-sex relationship from the family until season 3, giving Devine a different character arc to play.

The series has been nominated for four Emmys and three Satellite Awards.

The Pitch Perfect franchise consists of a movie trilogy and a television series so far. Devine appears in three of the four projects. He is also the lead of the television series, Bumper in Berlin. Though Devine had been pretty steadily working before the first movie was released, it could be considered his big break as it certainly brought him more attention from audiences and casting directors.

The Pitch Perfect movies focus on the Barden Bellas, a female collegiate acapella group as they struggle to get back on top of the competition circuit after various obstacles are set in their path. They often go up against the Treblemakers, a male acapella group that Bumper initially leads. In Bumper in Berlin, the titular character heads to Germany on his own for a contest and to record an album.

Bumper in Berlin reunites Devine with Modern Family costar Sarah Hyland.

Bumper is not supposed to be liked in the two Pitch Perfect movies in which he appears. He is definitely a comedic character, but he is also sexist, crass, and looks down on those he considers to have less talent than he does. While Devine does a great job in the movies, it’s actually Bumper in Berlin that better showcases his talents – including his singing. There, his character is more fleshed out and he becomes much more likable as he begins to really grow up and show a more vulnerable side.

Modern Family shows that Adam Devine can be more than simply the token funny guy.

Adam Devine only appears in 22 episodes across the long-running series. Despite that, his character makes a huge impression on the audience and Modern Family is Adam Devine’s best tv show.

Modern Family follows a large extended family in a sitcom format. There are the Dunphys, the Pritchetts, and the Tuckers. Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neil) is the family patriarch and his children, Claire (Julie Bowen) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) are the spouses of the other families. Because of how long the show is, nearly every possible family conflict and vacation is explored among the different dynamics of the characters and the audience gets to watch their children grow up.

Devine enters the series in season 5 as a nanny for Jay’s new son. Andy and Haley (Sarah Hyland) end up hitting it off. Though the two initially are just friends, they end up romantically involved for a time. Devine’s Andy leaves the show in season 7, but does make additional appearances in season 9.

Andy is one of the best roles Devine plays because he gets to be a three-dimensional character here. So many of Devine’s roles rely on him simply to be the person with the one-liners. He does not always have to be the funniest person in the scene here, and instead, gets to dig into who Andy is as a character. He also gets to play a sweet love story and complicated emotions. Modern Family shows that Adam Devine can be more than simply the token funny guy.
