All 4 Named Dragons In The Lord Of The Rings Mythology

This article contains spoilers for The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.High fantasy author, JRR Tolkien, wrote the hobbitwhich inspired fantasy dragons for generations to come, but Tolkien also wrote about dragons in some other stories set in The Lord of the Rings world. Published in 1937, the hobbit The famous dragon was actually a completely original invention at the time, even though dragons are a mainstay of the fantasy genre these days. Intelligent and with their own distinct personalities, Tolkien’s dragons were an evolution of the aggressive beasts of Norse myth. Peter Jackson hobbit The trilogy did a great job of bringing this concept to life.

Tolkien’s 1927 poem about Oliphaunts was not overtly set in Middle-earth, but later formed the basis of a poem mentioned in the lord of the rings. Aside from that debatable entry to the legendarium, the hobbit It was the first publication of The Lord of the Rings world. The main villain of this work was a dragon, demonstrating the centrality of dragons in Tolkien’s Middle-earth lore. But Tolkien had been writing tales about Middle-earth and its dragons since 1914, and only after his death did his son publish this broader tradition in the form of The Silmarillion and The history of Middle Earth.

Éowyn was one of the best characters in The Lord of the Rings and in The return of the kinggave Merry a horn that “It came from Scatha the Worm’s treasure.“Éowyn commented that”Eorl the Younger brought him from the north.“It referred to an ancient Rohirrim king, who lived between 2485 and 2545. In the time of Eorl, the Rohirrim lived further north than the plains of Rohan of the late Third Age. This placed them near the Ered Mithrin, known like the Gray Mountains, a Mountain Range at the top of Rhovanion. This was the territory of Scatha.

Scatha was one of the
“long worms”
according to “Appendix A”, but it is not clear whether they differed from the others

(dragons).

Watchers of The rings of power You may recognize Rhovanion as the territory of the Harfoots in Tolkien’s Second Age. Tolkien endorsed the Harfoots’ placement in the show in his prologue to The Lord of the Ringsand also placed Scatha in that general vicinity, calling him “the great dragon of Ered Mithrin.“The story of Scatha is set out in more detail in “Appendix A” of The Lord of the Rings but Peter Jackson’s the lord of the rings and hobbit The movies never went into details. The ancient Rohirrim Fram killed Scatha, starting a dispute with the dwarves over her treasure.

3 Glaurung

Glaurung the dragon.

Glaurung was the main villain of “De Túrin Turambar”, the twenty-first chapter of The Silmarillion. As such, it appeared largely in The Children of Húrinwhich was an alternate version of Tolkien’s Turambar story. Tolkien’s son Christopher returned to the Turambar story after its publication. The Silmarillion and created this longer edition of his father’s work. The resulting publication was a novel describing the fall of the heroic Húrin and the slow, painful annihilation of his children by Glaurung.

In 1914, Tolkien worked on a story about Kullervo, a doomed character from a Finnish epic published in 1835. He would later turn this into his story of Túrin Turambar. Tolkien wrote the first drafts on Middle-earth in 1914, and also tackled Eärendil. This makes the story of Glaurung part of Tolkien’s earliest imaginings of the lord of the rings and its mythology. Glaurung cast a spell on Túrin’s sister Nienor to make her forget her past. Túrin did not know her in his adulthood, so he fell in love with Nienor when they met. Needless to say, this ended in tragedy.

Smaug in The Hobbit The creation of the ancient Dwarven Lord of the Rings would have completely changed the outcome of The Hobbit

An ancient dwarven creation from a Tolkien story could have changed the events of The Hobbit, creating an entirely different story.

Glaurung also dealt with the ruin of Nargothrond, which was the kingdom of the elf Finrod Felagund. Finrod was the brother of Galadriel, and this lesser-known Tolkien character had established one of the largest kingdoms of the First Age before Glaurung invaded and took control. Glaurung was the first dragon Morgoth created and took a long time to mature. As such, he was known as the Father of Dragons and may go down in Eldar history as the worst and most devastating of them.

2 Ancalagon

the biggest

Artist's rendering of Earendil sailing in a seaplane to confront a giant black dragon, ancalagon.

Ancalagon the Black was known as the largest of Morgoth’s dragons and had wings, unlike Glaurung. While the flightless Glaurung represented Morgoth’s first tentative experiments with dragons, Ancalagon was the lethal evolution of Glaurung. Both Glaurung and Ancalagon were confirmed in Tolkien’s stories to be fire dragons. Fire dragons were fire-breathing dragons known in the Elvish Quenya language as Urulóki. Ancalagon fought on Morgoth’s side in the War of Wrath, one of the great Wars of Beleriand.

Both fire dragons and cold dragons existed in Middle-earth, and an unnamed cold dragon killed the dwarves Dáin I and Frór.

The War of Wrath was so catastrophic that it sank most of the kingdom of Beleriand, ending the First Age and beginning the Second. Ancalagon and the nameless dragons who fought with him had a great influence on this extensive destruction. This Great Worm was slain by Elrond’s father, Eärendil the Sailor. Aided by the Great Eagles, Eärendil”he killed Ancalagón… and threw him from the sky; and it fell upon the towers of Thangorodrim, and they were shattered into ruin.“This fire dragon from the First Age has never been adapted for the screen, nor has Glaurung, unlike Tolkien’s more famous dragon.

1 Smaug

Near

Smaug the Golden is, of course, the antagonist of the hobbitfinding central importance in Jackson’s second film hobbit trilogy. Bilbo and Thorin’s Company confronted Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaugbut it was Bard of Lake-town who finally slew the beast. Smaug’s arrogance and intellect made him an entirely new type of dragon in the literary landscape of 1937, when the hobbit was published for the first time. Smaug exemplified a characteristic common to the dragons of Middle Earth: protection and the hoarding of wealth.

In
The lost path and other writings,
Tolkien wrote an essay on etymology that listed Gostir as the name of a dragon meaning terrifying look, but no details were given about any dragon with this name.

Perfectly expressed by Benedict Cumberbatch in the hobbit movies, Smaug lived in the middle of a giant treasure that he had claimed as his own. Evicting Thorin’s ancestors from their home in Erebor, Smaug took his place as owner of the treasure, killing anyone who stood in his way. In The Lord of the RingsGandalf indicated to Frodo that “There are no dragons left on Earth where the old fire is hot enough. [to melt the Rings of Power].“This implied that Smaug may be the best-known dragon in Middle-earth, but he was not the last.
