What makes Pokémon “mythical”?
Image via Pokemon Company
Mythical Pokémon are Pokémon that are only obtainable through some kind of event in their first generation. The definition of a Mythical Pokémon has not been clearly stated anywhere, but they can usually be identified based on this criteria. However, to make things a little more complicated, Mythical Pokémon can sometimes be obtained through normal play in subsequent games. One example of this is Deoxys, which can be battled and captured in the Delta chapter of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire without any Pokémon or items being distributed through events.
Mythical Pokémon may seem to overlap with Legendary Pokémon, but in recent games, Legendary Pokémon are treated as something completely different from Mythical Pokémon. For example, the official website for the Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield states that until then, “you’ll be able to encounter all Legendary Pokémon that have appeared in the main series of Pokémon games.” This would only be true if Mythical Pokémon weren’t listed as a subset of Legendary Pokémon. This may seem like nitpicking, especially now that some Mythical Pokémon can be found normally in-game, but it’s worth noting that the distinction between Legendary Pokémon and Mythical Pokémon is one of the few things we know for sure about the definition of Mythical Pokémon.
