Pokémon GO
Pokémon GO is a mobile game released in 2016 that allows players to find, capture, train, and battle virtual Pokémon in the real world using their smartphones. The game is free to play but offers in-app purchases for additional items. The game originally featured 150 Pokémon, and now has around 700.
When it first launched, people loved the idea, but there were some technical issues. Despite this, it became very popular, with more than 500 million downloads worldwide in 2016. It is known for using location and augmented reality (AR) technology to encourage people to get active and even help local businesses attract more customers. But it has also been criticized for causing accidents and nuisances in public places. Some governments are concerned about its safety and have regulated its use.
By 2018, the game had over 147 million monthly players and over 1 billion downloads by 2019. It makes a ton of money, with revenues exceeding $6 billion by 2020.

Augmented reality gameplay in Pokémon GO begins with players creating and customizing their avatars. These avatars then appear on a map based on the player’s real-world location, with landmarks such as PokéStops and Pokémon Gyms displayed on the map. PokéStops can be equipped with Lure Modules to attract more Pokémon, while Gyms serve as battle locations for team matches.
As players move around, their avatars move around the game map. Different types of Pokémon appear in different areas; for example, water-type Pokémon appear near water. When encountering a Pokémon, players can use their device’s camera to view it in AR mode, or against a generic background.
Although the game is free, players can purchase items such as Poké Balls and incense in the app. Players can catch Pokémons by throwing Poké Balls at them when they encounter them. After successfully catching Poké Balls, players can get game currencies such as candy and stardust, which can be used to upgrade and evolve Pokémons.
Events like Community Days increase the number of Pokémon available and offer exclusive moves. New Pokémon are added regularly, including region-specific and Legendary Pokémon. Gyms are revamped to be more team-friendly, while Raid Battles allow teams to take on powerful Pokémon for rewards. Trainer Battles and Team GO Rocket Battles add even more layers to the game, making Pokémon GO an ever-evolving adventure.
