Anne Heche’s Last Movies — All 5 Posthumous Releases, Explained

With a career going back to the 1980s, late actor Anne Heche was gifted with a versatile talent that allowed her to portray a variety of roles. From playing the romantic lead in Six Days Seven Nights to providing strong supporting characters in movies like Donnie Brasco, Heche showed her dedication to her craft, no matter how big or small the part was. Even after she received homophobic backlash when she began a romantic relationship with Ellen DeGeneres in 1997, Heche never hid from the spotlight.

The actress’ abilities even extended to dance, as evident when Heche stole the show on Dancing with the Stars in season 29 of the competition reality series. Two years later, Heche was seriously injured in a car crash, and died in a hospital a week later on August 12, 2022. Following Heche’s death, there were five films that continued to be released posthumously that featured the actor, and a sixth one is still on the way. All independent titles, these movies showed Heche’s love for acting as well as her ability to take on just about every type of genre.

This Tubi original movie is a rom-com about a woman named Frankie who meets a handsome veterinarian named Jack when he saves her dog from being hit by a car. Although there is an instant attraction between them, Jack is already engaged to someone else. Anne Heche plays Katrina in the movie, the mother of Frankie’s friend Melody and a somewhat surrogate mother for Frankie. She offers helpful advice in the ways of love while encouraging Frankie to live in the moment.

Heche’s costars, Joey Lawrence and Samantha Cope, had high praise for the late actor following her death. “She had so much energy and so much love and light,” Cope told People. Lawrence complimented Heche on her professionalism, stating:

“She was so good that we really couldn’t even edit too much around those scenes because she was just ad-libbing and making up stuff. She just brought so much to it.”

You’re Killing Me (2023)

Astrid Schroder

Anne Heche as Astrid holding a hand mirror in You're Killing Me

In this indie horror, high-schooler Eden Murphy needs a scholarship to get into the university of her dreams. She attends a party hosted by fellow student Barrett Schroder, the son of a congressman, hoping to get his help. Things get out of hand when Eden discovers that Barrett has a dark secret — one that even his parents are willing to kill for to keep it quiet.

Anne Heche plays Astrid Schroder, Barrett’s mother and the wife of Congressman Schroder. Taking on a role that is very different from her previous work, Heche gives a very convincing portrayal as the sinister Astrid, a woman who will do anything to keep her family’s reputation intact.

Wildfire: The Legend Of The Cherokee Ghost Horse (2023)

Diana Jones

Anne Heche as Diana wearing a hat and petting a horse in Wildfire

Inspired by the 1975 song “Wildfire” by country artist Michael Martin Murphey, Wildfire: The Legend of the Cherokee Ghost Horse tells the story of a young girl who befriends a mysterious wild horse. A teenager named Samantha moves to her aunt’s horse farm in Oklahoma after the death of her parents. There, she comes upon a roaming white stallion that she names Wildfire, and with the help of a former rodeo champion, Samantha learns how to ride it.

Anne Heche plays Diana Jones, the champion cowgirl who teaches Samantha how to ride Wildfire. This indie family film is a nice tribute to the Murphey song, as well as a feel-good watch that will pull on the heartstrings.

Anne Heche’s Last Movie Still Hasn’t Been Released Yet

Title only of the Chasing Nightmares promotional poster

The release date of Anne Heche’s final film, Chasing Nightmares, is still TBD, but with the cast having signed on back in 2019 (via Deadline), it’s possible we may see its arrival sometime soon. According to the film’s IMDb page, Heche will play the role of Claire, alongside Outlander actor Graham McTavish as Bill. The synopsis for the movie reads:

A college student risks her and her friends’ lives to track down the meaning behind the nightmares she has about a girl and a delusional masked man.”

The movie was written and directed by indie filmmaker Chris McGowan, and also features cast members Spencer Daniels, Aubrey Cleland, Sarah Moliski, and Jay Huguley, among others. The status of the movie on IMDb is listed as being in post-production, so hopefully, we may see the release of Chasing Nightmares, Anne Heche’s last movie, sometime in 2025.
