It later became available for Nintendo Switch in March 2021 and for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in March 2022. Prior to starting a match, players form squads of either two or three players and choose from a variety of predefined characters known as “Legends,” each possessing unique abilities. Apex Legends offers two gameplay modes. In the “Battle Royale” mode, up to 20 three-person squads or 30 two-person duos parachute onto an island, scavenge for weapons and supplies, and engage in combat with the goal of defeating all other players.

The playable area on the island gradually shrinks over time, compelling players to remain mobile or risk being outside the safe zone, which can be fatal. The last surviving team emerges as the winner. The second mode, called “Arenas,” involves three-player squads competing against another squad in a 3v3 team deathmatch across multiple rounds. The match ends when a team accumulates at least 3 points and maintains a 2-point lead.
Apex Legends is set within the science fiction universe of Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall series, featuring appearances by various characters from the Titanfall franchise either as playable Legends or minor characters. Development on the game began in late 2016, but it remained a closely guarded secret until its surprise release in 2019.
Prior to its launch, it was widely believed that Respawn Entertainment was working on a third installment of the Titanfall series, their previous major game. The game received positive reviews from critics, who commended its gameplay, progression system, and successful integration of elements from different genres.
Many considered it a formidable competitor in the battle royale genre. Apex Legends attracted over 25 million players within its first week and reached the milestone of 50 million players within the first month. As of April 2021, it boasted approximately 100 million players, establishing itself as one of the most popular video games of all time in terms of player count.

Apex Legends is an online multiplayer game in the battle royale genre that features squads of three players. The squads utilize pre-made characters known as “Legends,” each possessing unique abilities akin to hero shooters. The game offers alternate modes allowing for single-player and two-player squads in addition to the standard three-player squads. It follows a free-to-play model and incorporates microtransactions and loot boxes to generate revenue. These allow players to spend real money or in-game currency on cosmetic items such as character outfits and weapon skins.
In a typical match, twenty teams consisting of three-player squads compete against each other. Players can either team up with friends or be randomly matched with other players. Before the match begins, each player selects one of the 23 playable characters (as of season 15), with the restriction that no squad can have duplicate characters.
Each character has a distinct design, personality, and set of abilities that contribute to different playstyles. The teams start the match by boarding an aircraft that traverses the game map. One player in each squad acts as the jumpmaster, determining when the squad skydives out of the aircraft and where they land, with input from other squad members. However, players have the freedom to deviate from the chosen path.
Once on the ground, squads scavenge for weapons, armor, and other equipment scattered in buildings or crates throughout the map. They must remain vigilant for other squads. Apex Legends includes a nonverbal communication “ping system” that allows players to use their game controller to convey directions, weapon locations, enemies, and suggested strategies to their squad. While the game offers familiar movement mechanics found in other shooters, it also incorporates features from previous Titanfall games, such as the ability to climb over obstacles, slide down slopes, and use zip-lines for fast traversal.
As the match progresses, a shrinking safe zone is designated around a randomly chosen point on the map. Players caught outside the safe zone suffer damage and may perish if they fail to reach safety in time. This forces encounters between squads within a progressively smaller area. The last squad with surviving members is crowned the “Apex Champions” of the match. Players who are knocked down during gameplay can be revived by their squadmates. If a player is fully eliminated, they can still be resurrected if their teammates collect their respawn banner, which appears at their place of death, and bring it to designated beacons on the island. The respawn banner has a time limit, and if it expires, the player is permanently eliminated.
Season 9 introduced a permanent mode called “Arena.” In this mode, three-player squads engage in 3v3 team deathmatches against other squads over several rounds. The winning team must have a minimum of 3 points and maintain a 2-point lead. If a game reaches round 9 with both teams tied at 4 points, a sudden death round ensues.
This scoring system prevents excessively long matches and maintains the intensity of competitive games. Unlike the battle royale mode, players spawn in a “shop” in the arena mode. They can use materials earned in previous rounds to purchase equipment and charges for their Legend’s abilities, preparing for the next fight. This variation of the game incorporates mechanics from shooters like Counter-Strike and Valorant. It is the first permanent departure from the battle royale format and was later removed in Season 16.
