Welcome to the 2023 Azur Lane community tier list. In this comprehensive tier list, we’ll showcase the best-performing ships in the game, divided into S-, A-, B-, and C-tier tiers. This list is intended to help players make informed decisions when building fleets for different game modes.
- S-Class: These ships represent the pinnacle of power and versatility, shaping the meta for all game modes. With their excellent attributes and powerful skills, they are an indispensable asset in your fleet. Some of the famous ships of this class include Helena (light cruiser), Friedrich der Grosse (aircraft carrier), Centaur (light aircraft carrier), and Roon (heavy cruiser), among others.
- A-Class: While not as dominant as S-class ships, A-class ships are still powerful choices with high stats and combat abilities. They thrive in a variety of combat situations and contribute significantly to your fleet’s success. Some of the famous ships in this class include Neptune (light cruiser), Yukikaze (destroyer), Chapaev (light cruiser), and Illustrious (aircraft carrier), among others.
- Tier B: Ships in this tier are stable and can be powerful in the hands of a skilled player. While not as powerful as higher tier ships, these ships can be considered a meta choice as long as the player has the experience and knowledge of the game. Ships such as Jean Bart (battleship), Birmingham (light cruiser), Albacore (submarine) and Kaga (aircraft carrier) belong to this class.
- C-Class: C-class ships are considered average in performance and may have lower statistics compared to ships of higher tiers. While they may find suitable use in specific scenarios, they may not be as versatile or effective in general combat situations. If available, players may consider replacing these ships with more powerful alternatives. Ships like Newcastle Retrofit (light cruiser), Kawakaze (destroyer), Belfast (light cruiser) and Gangut (battleship) belong to this class.
- D Tier: Unfortunately, D Tier ships have the lowest statistics and performance, making them less likely to provide the best gaming experience. While they may be the only option available initially, players are encouraged to seek out higher-tier ships and replace them as soon as possible. Ships such as Curacoa Retrofit (light cruiser), Mikasa (battleship), Eagle (aircraft carrier) and U-556 (submarine) belong to this class.
- In “Azur Lane”, players can organize two fleets, including the vanguard and the rear queue. Each fleet has specific ship types suitable for different roles. Vanguard ships usually consist of destroyers, light cruisers, heavy cruisers, large cruisers and battlecruisers. For the back row, players can choose from battleships, aviation battleships, surveillance ships, repair ships, aircraft carriers, light aircraft carriers, submarines, and submarine seaplane carriers.
- Understanding a ship’s strengths and choosing ships strategically is crucial to the success of the game’s main PvE mode, in which players navigate a grid-like map to reach bosses while fighting a variety of enemies. In PvP mode, players must prepare defensive and offensive fleets to challenge other players’ defenses.

Azur Lane gameplay
Azur Lane is an engaging side-scrolling shooter, simulation, and role-playing video game in which players collect adorable anthropomorphic interpretations of World War II battleships known as “ship girls.” These shipgirls represented a variety of naval forces, including the United States Navy, the Royal Navy, the Imperial Japanese Navy, the German Navy, and others, with other ships from other countries later added.
In the game, players form a fleet of six ship girls to fight against artificial intelligence-controlled enemies or other players’ fleets. Ship girls can gain experience points (EXP) through battles, commissions, or being placed in dormitories, which helps them level up and enhance their abilities. Each ship girl has unique upgradeable abilities that players can activate during battle.
As players embark on their journey, they have the opportunity to choose personifications of famous battleships such as the American destroyer USS Laffey (DD-459), the British destroyer USS Javelin and the German destroyer Z23 (in Chinese and English versions) or the Japanese destroyer USS Ayanami (in Japanese and the Korean version) as their starting ship and considered the protagonist of the game.
During the development of the game, over 450 characters were introduced, representing ships from nine different countries that fought in World War II. A notable feature of the game is its inclusion of famous museum ships such as the Japanese Mikasa and the Russian Aurora, adding to the game’s historical significance.

Azur Lane plot
At the start of the game, players witness an anthropomorphic depiction of the Battle of the Denmark Strait, with the famous British battlecruiser HMS Hood being depicted as being sunk by characters representing the German military.
The game centers on a military alliance called “Azur Lane”, which consists of the Eagle Alliance (United States), the Royal Navy (United Kingdom), the Sakura Empire (Empire of Japan), the Iron Blood (Nazi Germany), the Dragon Tribe and other countries. Empire (Republic of China), Northern Council (Soviet Union), Iris Orthodox Church (France), and Empire of Sardinia (Kingdom of Italy).
However, due to alien interference, the alliance collapsed, leading to the formation of the “Scarlet Axis” of hostile factions such as the Iron Blood, Sakura Empire, and Sardinian Empire.
Using advanced technology provided by aliens known as the Sirens, the Scarlet Axis launched an invasion against their former allies. This resulted in many Azur Lane territories being occupied by the Scarlet Axis and the Iris Orthodoxy splitting into the Iris Liberties (Free France) and the Dominion of Vichy (Vichy France).
The game’s main plot is set against the backdrop of U.S. naval engagements during the Pacific War, with chapters devoted to major battles such as the Battle of Midway, the Battle of Guadalcanal, and the Battles of the Marianas and Palau Islands. Players can experience and participate in these historical events as the game’s storyline progresses.
