Brian Sledge, aka BJ the Chicago Kid, has had a fascinating journey in the music industry. Born in Chicago in 1984 to church choir directors, he grew up on Chicago’s South Side. After seeing Janet Jackson perform as a child, his love for music was ignited. At just 19, he moved to Los Angeles, became a backing singer for the gospel duo Mary Mary, and contributed to the music of Stevie Wonder.
BJ The Chicago Kid didn’t stop there. He went on to write songs for well-known artists such as Crystal Aikin, Shirley Caesar, Lalah Hathaway, Joe and Kindred the Family Soul. His big break came when he performed on Kanye West’s song “Impossible” with Twista and Keyshia Cole.
In the following years, he released mixtapes such as Taste of Chicago and New Beginnings. By 2012, he independently released his first studio album, Pineapple Now-Laters, and later signed with Motown Records. His song “Good Luv’n” became his first commercial single.
