Black Flag is a punk rock band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California. The band was formed by guitarist Greg Ginn, who wrote most of the band’s songs. Black Flag is known for being one of the first hardcore punk bands and helping to shape post-hardcore music.

They split in 1986 but got back together in 2003 and again in 2013. During their second reunion, they released What The… in 2013, their first album in nearly 30 years. In January 2019, they announced their third album reunion.

The band further explored these themes when Henry Rollins joined the band as lead singer in 1981. Most of their music is released on Ginn’s own label, SST Records.

They were one of the first punk rock bands to incorporate heavy metal sounds into their music.
