Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota, and grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota. His early exposure to blues, country, and rock music on the radio sparked his interest in music. Dylan formed a band during high school and moved to Minneapolis in 1959 to attend the University of Minnesota.
He developed a love for folk music and began performing locally, transitioning from a rock style to a more serious folk style. In 1961, he moved to New York City, where he met his idol, Woody Guthrie, and began to make his mark on the Greenwich Village folk scene.
