Cake is a rock band from Sacramento, California. They have five members: John McCrea, singer; , on trumpet; Xan McCurdy, guitar; Daniel McCallum, bassist; and Todd Roper, drummer. The band is known for its singer’s sarcastic lyrics and unique sound. They incorporate different musical styles such as country, disco, rock, funk and hip-hop into their songs.

Cake was formed in 1991 with John McCrea, Vince DiFiore, Greg Brown, Frank French and Shon Meckfessel. Gabe Nelson later replaced Meke Fessel. They released their first album independently, Motorcade of Generosity, before signing with Capricorn Records in 1995.

Their song “Rock ‘n’ Roll Lifestyle” was a hit, reaching number 35 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and appearing on MTV’s 120 Minutes. After some changes in the band’s lineup, they released their second album, Fashion Nugget, in 1996 and achieved great success with the hit single “The Distance”. As they continued to create music, they released more albums, such as 1998’s Prolonging the Magic and 2001’s Comfort Eagle, which featured the popular song “Short Skirt/Long Jacket.”

In 2004, they released their last album “Pressure Chief” with Columbia Records. They then founded their own record label, Upbeat Records, and released Showroom of Compassion in 2011. The album performed extremely well, debuting at the top of the Billboard charts. They haven’t released many new albums since 2011, but they still perform live shows and sometimes hint that they may release new music in the future.

cake music style

Cake’s music is a fusion of many different styles. They incorporate country, mariachi, new wave, college rock, jazz, funk, Iranian folk, Brazilian and hip-hop into their songs. Vocalist John McCrea has received credits from artists including Hank Williams, Tom Zé, the Golden Gate Quartet, and Sly and the Family Stone inspiration.

The band’s style is recognized for several things. First and foremost, Vince DiFiore’s trumpet playing is a huge part of their sound. McRae wanted another instrument to accompany his songs, and the trumpet fit the bill, adding a different melody. McRae himself is known for his clever and sarcastic lyrics, delivered in a deadpan, direct manner. He sings in a monotone voice, which gives their music a unique feel. Additionally, they use an instrument called a vibraslap, which adds a unique sound to their music.

Overall, Cake is known for mixing different genres of music together and creating a unique and eclectic sound.
