Channing Tatum’s 10 Best Comedy Movies

Summary

  • Channing Tatum shines in comedies, showcasing his physical humor & comedic timing.
  • Tatum could star in his own Gambit movie after his Deadpool cameo, and it’s likely that he would bring a lot of humor to the role.
  • Tatum’s range as a comedic actor extends beyond typical roles, delivering charming performances in romcoms and action comedies.

Channing Tatum has starred in several hilarious comedies over the years, including romcoms, buddy cop movies and animated musicals. Tatum has always fit the mold of a handsome Hollywood leading man, but he has a funny side too, and he often plays the part of a dimwitted hunk in his comedy movies. He has a fairly broad range as a comedic actor, however, so it would be false to suggest that he is always boxed into such restrictive roles.

After his cameo appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, Channing Tatum could have his own Gambit movie coming soon. Tatum has the comedy chops to play Gambit with just as much humor as Ryan Reynolds brings to Deadpool. His best comedy movies show that he can master physical humor as well as comedic timing. Tatum doesn’t always appear in comedies, but the genre seems to bring the best out of him.

Director Adam Nee , Aaron Nee Release Date March 25, 2022 Cast Sandra Bullock , Channing Tatum , Brad Pitt , Danielle Radcliffe , Patti Harrison , Da’Vine Joy Randolph

Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock make a delightful pair in The Lost City, an adventure-romance that ticks all the boxes. She plays a romance novelist who has to accept the fact that she owes a large chunk of her success to the beefcake who poses for her book covers. Tatum has always looked like the kind of man who might adorn the front of a romance paperback, and he’s happy to play into the joke in The Lost City.

The Lost City does very little to surprise its audience, but this isn’t a criticism. With a breezy pace and some charming performances, the movie delivers on exactly what fans might want from a romcom set on an exotic but dangerous island. Tatum’s character is the key. He’s not the shallow, self-obsessed dimwit he initially appears to be. He’s also a tender and considerate guy who audiences can easily root for.

Director Karey Kirkpatrick , Jason Reisig Release Date September 28, 2018 Cast Channing Tatum , LeBron James , Yara Shahidi , James Corden , Danny DeVito , Gina Rodriguez , Ely Henry , Common , Zendaya , Jimmy Tatro

Smallfoot is an animated musical with a surprisingly forward message about challenging authority and being curious. Channing Tatum plays Migo, a yeti living in a small mountaintop community way beyond human reach. His elders live religiously by their rules, literally set in stone, which are passed down through the generations. When Migo sees a human – a “smallfoot” – for the first time, he realizes that everything he has been taught might not be so simple.

Smallfoot
is an animated musical with a surprisingly forward message about challenging authority and being curious.

While everyone in Migo’s village is content to blend in and stay in their lane, Smalfoot urges its young audience to think outside the box. Its sweet message comes with a large helping of cartoon slapstick, like a Looney Tunes cartoon set in the Himalayas. The songs serve the story well, but they aren’t memorable or funny enough to really cut through. Still, Smallfoot takes its quirky premise to some interesting places.

Director Matthew Vaughn Release Date September 22, 2017 Cast Jeff Bridges , Colin Firth , Channing Tatum , Halle Berry , Pedro Pascal , Mark Strong , Julianne Moore , Taron Egerton

The second movie in the Kingsman franchise lacks some of the magic from the first, but it’s still an enjoyable spy comedy with some brilliant action sequences. The movie made the decision to bring Colin Firth’s character back from the dead, concocting a ludicrous sci-fi way to allow him to survive a gunshot wound to the head. This tanked the franchise’s credibility, and it left The Golden Circle without any real stakes, since characters could die and come back minutes later.

The Golden Circle follows Eggsy and Harry as they meet their American counterparts at the Statesman agency. Among the many new faces is Channing Tatum’s Tequila. He is forced to take a back seat for most of the movie, with Pedro Pascal taking his spot as Eggsy’s partner. However, the movie’s ending suggests that he could feature more prominently in Kingsman: The Blue Blood.

Director Ethan Coen , Joel Coen Release Date February 5, 2016 Cast Josh Brolin , Channing Tatum , Tilda Swinton , George Clooney , Scarlett Johansson , Frances McDormand , Jonah Hill , Ralph Fiennes

Hail, Caesar hasn’t enjoyed the same widespread acclaim as some of the Coen brothers’ best movies, but there’s still a lot to like about their adventure into Old Hollywood. Channing Tatum plays Burt Gurney, one of many pampered movie stars causing problems for Josh Brolin’s overworked studio fixer. Gurney is a star of lavish musicals in the style of Singin’ in the Rain, so Tatum gets a chance to show off his dancing skills.

Hail, Caesar
hasn’t enjoyed the same widespread acclaim as some of the Coen brothers’ best movies, but there’s still a lot to like about their adventure into Old Hollywood.

One of the most common criticisms of Hail, Caesar is that there are too many loosely connected plot threads, some of which don’t amount to much. Tatum’s character is certainly not part of the problem, as he turns out to play a vital part in the Communist plot to infiltrate the movie industry. The rest of the cast have great moments, especially Alden Ehrenreich and Tilda Swinton, but their bit parts add up to little more than skits.

She’s the Man takes William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and spins it into a 21st century story about high school soccer. Amanda Bynes plays Viola, a teenage girl who disguises herself as her twin brother to attend a boarding school where she can play soccer on the boy’s team. Channing Tatum plays her roommate, and one point in the confusing love triangle that soon develops.

She’s the Man

She’s the Man is a clever synthesis of Shakespeare’s work and the tropes of teen comedies. It works by cutting through Shakespeare’s language to get to the heart of the comedic situations in Twelfth Night, and they are just as funny and just as confusing as ever. Tatum plays his role superbly, as a masculine jock who lacks the emotional intelligence to understand his strange feelings about his new roommate.

Fly Me to the Moon

Director Greg Berlanti Release Date July 12, 2024 Cast Scarlett Johansson , Woody Harrelson , Channing Tatum , Jim Rash , Ray Romano , Peter Jacobson , Joe Chrest , Colin Woodell

Fly Me to the Moon‘s 65% Rotten Tomatoes score is nothing special, but its 91% audience score suggests that audiences like the crowd-pleasing romcom a lot more than critics. The story puts a spin on decades-old conspiracy theories about the space race, presenting an alternative reality in which NASA’s back-up plan, in case of an emergency, is to stage the moon landing for PR purposes.

Fly Me to the Moon
is the kind of movie where everyone is beautiful and impeccably dressed, but its charming retro style barely conceals its cynical comedy.

Fly Me to the Moon is the kind of movie where everyone is beautiful and impeccably dressed, but its charming retro style barely conceals its cynical comedy. Channing Tatum’s Fly Me to the Moon character is based on a real person. His constant push-and-pull relationship with Scarlett Johansson’s fictional spin doctor emphasizes the importance of image in public relations and political decision-making. It’s a sly satire of America’s obsession with optics, as well as a charming love story.

22 Jump Street pulls off the nearly-impossible task of making a comedy sequel that is actually funny, and just as creative as the first movie. This time round, Greg Jenko and Morton Schmidt go undercover at a college, and their friendship begins to fray as they are pulled into different social circles. In the same way that 21 Jump Street parodies teen movies, 22 Jump Street lands a few shots at college comedies.

Channing Tatum stated recently that he would still be interested in a potential 23 Jump Street with Jonah Hill. This isn’t the only 21 Jump Street project that has been in development. There were previous reports of a female-led spinoff and even a crossover movie with the Men in Black universe, but none of these have come to fruition so far. 22 Jump Street makes fun of movie franchises which drag on for too long in its closing credits, as potential sequels are teased with the two main characters attending every kind of school imaginable.

Director Steven Soderbergh Release Date June 29, 2012 Cast Channing Tatum , Alex Pettyfer , Cody Horn , Olivia Munn , Matt Bomer , Joe Manganiello , Matthew McConaughey

When it was first released, Magic Mike was looked down upon in some quarters as a kind of socially acceptable pornography, but this was never a fair assessment. While the movie does deliver plenty of raunchy scenes of Channing Tatum and other Hollywood hunks as erotic dancers, it’s a surprisingly effective comedy-drama too. Magic Mike has charms even for those who don’t come for the dancing.

Magic Mike
is so effective in part because of how the story takes inspiration from Channing Tatum’s real-life experiences as a male stripper in Florida.

Magic Mike is so effective in part because of how the story takes inspiration from Channing Tatum’s real-life experiences as a male stripper in Florida during his teenage years. It’s his most personal movie, but that doesn’t mean it gets too solipsistic or self-serious. The sequels never quite lived up to the blend of racy fun and interesting character development of the first movie.

Director Steven Soderbergh Release Date August 18, 2017 Cast Channing Tatum , Adam Driver , Daniel Craig , Farrah Mackenzie , Jim O’Heir , Riley Keough , Rebecca Koon , Katie Holmes

Steven Soderbergh already had the Ocean‘s trilogy under his belt when he made his triumphant return to the heist genre with Logan Lucky. Far from the glamour of Monaco or the high-roller tables of Las Vegas, Logan Lucky stages a heist in a working-class area of West Virginia. Two brothers, played by Channing Tatum and Adam Driver, try to reverse their family’s historically poor fortunes by robbing a motor speedway.

Logan Lucky

Logan Lucky is a brilliant heist movie, just as tense and exciting as the genre’s best, but with a humorous streak too. Driver and Tatum strike up a likable comedic dynamic as the two brothers. Tatum is more sympathetic and emotional, while Driver seems to be having fun as a goofy sidekick, with his long hair and big eyes giving him the disheveled appearance of a wet dog. Soderbergh has a flair for controlled chaos, and it’s a joy to watch each piece falling into place in Logan Lucky.

Channing Tatum’s best comedy movie is still 21 Jump Street, and it’s hard to see that changing any time soon. The R-rated buddy cop comedy stars Tatum and Jonah Hill as two police officers who go undercover as high school students to investigate a new drug. Based on a TV show of the same name, 21 Jump Street takes things in its own direction, and the result is a hilariously creative comedy.

Channing Tatum’s best comedy movie is still
21 Jump Street,
and it’s hard to see that changing any time soon.

Tatum and Hill have plenty of ways of eliciting a laugh from their audience. The beauty of 21 Jump Street is that, unlike most other buddy cop comedies, the two main characters are genuinely best friends. Aside from their obvious physical differences, and a considerable intelligence gap, they have a lot in common. Rather than squabbling like so many other mismatched cop duos, they egg each other on into increasingly misjudged schemes.
