Drew Hancock’s horror comedy Companion has received rave reviews for its twist-filled yet smart plot, entertaining performances and well-thought-out themes, but that doesn’t stop it from having a number of truly brutal deaths. Starring Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher, Companion takes a turn towards science fiction early on, and never looks back as it uses robots to deliver a powerful metaphor about abusive relationships. As the narrative unfolds, the seemingly idyllic lakeside setting is steadily splattered with blood, yielding some truly memorable horror movie kills.
You are watching: Companion’s 7 Deaths, Ranked By Brutality
Companion‘s inclusion of robotic characters introduces an interesting threat to the movie’s proceedings, as their advanced (and programmable, if you have the right mobile device) strength and lack of empathy lead to sudden, violent deaths. Somewhat impressively, the comedy element is never lost despite the violence and death. While Companion‘s cast isn’t very large to begin with, it dwindles fast once the real action starts to unfold, and by the end of Companion, there is really only one major character left standing.

Patrick (Lukas Gage)
Fries His Hard-Wiring By Sticking A Taser In His Mouth
One of the major twist reveals in Companion was that Sophie Thatcher’s Iris was not the only robot in the small group seemingly vacationing by the lakeside. Eli’s boyfriend, Patrick (Lukas Gage), proved himself to be a talented chef, a spontaneous dancer, and an overall fully engaged member of the group, making the reveal that he was an Empathix companion robot like Iris all the more shocking. Like Iris, Patrick’s personality and abilities were controlled by Eli’s mobile device, and also like Iris, Patrick was used by Josh to further his own goals.

Josh and Eli set Patrick on the trail of Iris once she escaped the lake house, and eventually Josh increased Patrick’s aggression controls to ensure that he would completely take care of Iris when called upon. As a result, Patrick essentially becomes a weapon for Josh, and several people die at his hands once his aggression levels are turned up. However, Patrick and Eli proved themselves to be evidence that real love can exist between a person and their robot.
Patrick was able to break free of his controls upon recalling his real love for Eli, and as a result he decides that he can’t live without Eli, knowing that he is in fact a robot and has no purpose without the person he loves. Patrick sticks the police officer’s taser in his mouth and fries his hard-wiring, essentially killing himself. It isn’t very violent or brutal, which is why it’s so low on the list.

Sid From Empathix (Matt McCarthy)
Shot By Patrick In The Driver’s Seat Of The Empathix Van
Close
When Josh’s plan goes awry and several people end up dead, he decides to call the company he rented Iris from, Empathix. They send two employees out to the lake house to deal with the “defective” Iris, but once they reveal to Josh that Iris has been recording everything and that they can see it, he sets Patrick (now under his control) on the two employees. It’s further proof of Josh’s ultimate selfishness, as he has no qualms with killing two more innocent people to preserve his own innocence and still make away with Sergey’s money.

The two employees, Sid and Teddy, load Iris up to haul her away, but before they are able to leave the property, they are stopped by Patrick. With his aggression levels turned up to 100, Patrick doesn’t hesitate to use any means to accomplish what he’s been directed to do, and he shoots the driver, Sid, several times in the Empathix van while Teddy manages to escape into the woods. It’s a sudden and violent death, but it’s over quickly and the camera doesn’t linger on the gore, so it doesn’t come across as brutal.

Eli (Harvey Guillén)
Shot In The Chest By Iris In Self-Defense
Harvey Guillén’s Eli acts mostly as comic relief in Companion, but like Josh, he proves that he’s not much better when it comes to committing unthinkable acts against Iris when millions of dollars are suddenly in play for him. When Iris first escapes after killing Sergey, the situation for Josh, Kat, Eli, and Patrick hasn’t completely spiraled out of control, so the four of them head into the woods to find her. Patrick and Eli set off in one direction while Josh and Kat head off in another.
Eventually, Eli catches up to her and tackles her to the ground, leading to them rolling around and struggling for the only gun that the group has, which Eli took from Sergey’s safe. Eli finally gains the upper hand and winds up on top of Iris, but as he attempts to shoot her and stop her once and for all, she manages to turn the gun on him and shoot him in the chest, killing him quickly. It’s an up-close death with the exit wound and blood plainly visible, making it slightly more brutal than Sid’s shooting death.

Kat (Megan Suri)
Stabbed In The Back By Patrick
Kat is Josh’s surprise accomplice in the planned robbery of Sergey’s lake house. As Sergey’s girlfriend, she sets Josh upon him claiming Sergey is a “bad guy”, even though he wasn’t actually involved in anything illicit. Her lies are what prompt Josh to scheme Iris’ murder of the Russian businessman in the first place, but Kat certainly does not escape the incident at the lake house unharmed.
When things go completely off the rails and Patrick kills Deputy Hendrix during his pursuit of Iris, Kat decides she can no longer stomach Josh’s callous attitude towards violence and willingness to keep killing innocent people just for the money. Unfortunately for her, when she attempts to leave, Josh tells Patrick to stop her instead of doing it himself. Patrick, with his adjusted aggression levels, chooses to stab her in the back with a kitchen knife. Kat is able to make her way to the couch where she slowly bleeds out, making this more brutal than a gun death.
3
Sergey (Rupert Friend)
Stabbed In The Neck By Iris
Iris spends most of the movie with her face and clothing covered in blood, and it all comes back to the murder that kick-started the narrative. While Iris is enjoying the lake, she is approached by Sergey, who creepily attempts to assault her, supposedly with Josh’s approval. Iris, still unaware she is a robot, resists him, and the two struggle to the point of rolling around on the sand.
Sergey’s death is a moment of extreme violence in what had, up to that point, been an idyllic setting, and it sets the tone for the rest of the movie.
As Sergey forces himself on her, Iris pulls a pocket knife out of her pocket (which Josh planted on her for the very purpose) and stabs Sergey in the neck with it. There was no real malevolence on Iris’ part, as she was defending herself. Nevertheless, Sergey’s neck begins to spurt blood, covering Iris’s face and body, and leaving Sergery dead in short order. It’s a moment of extreme violence in what had, up to that point, been an idyllic setting, and it sets the tone for the rest of the movie.

Deputy Hendrix (Marc Menchaca)
Beaten To Death With His Own Gun By Patrick
When Iris first manages to escape in Josh’s car, she thinks she has made a real getaway, until the self-driving car shuts itself down once Josh reports it stolen. As she attempts to break out of the car by kicking the window out, she is passed by a police deputy, who stops and confronts Iris. Iris clevely changes her own language settings to German, as she knows it’s unlikely that he speaks the language, and it will allow her to tell him the truth of anything he asks her about without him understanding the answer and becoming suspicious.
Unfortunately for Deputy Hendrix, the language gap gives Patrick enough time to catch up with him and Iris. With his directive not to harm anyone turned off, and his aggression set to 100, Patrick brutally beats the deputy to death with his own gun, smashing his face multiple times until it’s little more than a mess of gore and bone. He then stuffs both Deputy Hendrix and Iris in the trunk of the car and returns to the lake house. It’s maybe the single most extreme act of violence in Companion, and easily one of the most brutal kills.

Josh (Jack Quaid)
Brains Scrambled By An Automatic Wine Bottle Opener
Close
There is certainly an argument to be made for Deputy Hendrix’s death being the most brutal, but Josh’s death takes the top spot here due to the creativity and end result of his death. Once Patrick fries his own circuitry for the sake of his own desperate love, Iris finds Teddy, the surviving Empathix employee in the woods, and has him grant her the ability to fully control herself without the use of any sort of device. She then returns to the lake house to confront Josh one final time as he attempts to make off with the money.
Iris is held down by men three times in the movie (Sergey, Eli, and Josh) and kills all three, serving as a potent metaphor for the horror comedy’s examination of abusive relationships.
Josh still attempts to use the influence he believes he has over Iris against her, and for most of their final interaction, it seems to work in keeping her from killing him. However, they eventually come to blows and wind up on the ground, where Josh gains the upper hand. Just as he’s about to kill Iris, she jams an electric corkscrew into his temple, which drives its point deep into Josh’s skull and brain, and sickeningly pulls bone and brain matter into the cork reservoir. It’s an inventive and brutal death that acts as the exclamation point for Companion.
