Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, also known as Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven’s Door, is a 2001 Japanese anime film based on the Cowboy Bebop series. Created by Hajime Yatate, the film takes place between episodes 22 and 23 of the original series. The film tells the story of a starship’s bounty hunter crew trying to stop a mysterious terrorist who plans to release a virus and wipe out the human race on Mars.

The film is the result of a collaboration with key staff from the original series, including director Shinichiro Watanabe and composer Yoko Kanno. In keeping with the series’ continuity, the film retains the style of the series but introduces improvements such as enhanced animation and live-action filming techniques.

The film incorporates Arabic aesthetics, and Watanabe even traveled to Morocco to research it. The film was released in Japan in 2001 and in the United States in 2002, grossing over $3 million worldwide, receiving critical acclaim and being nominated for Best Animated Film by the Online Film Critics Society.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

On Mars, on Halloween Eve, Faye witnesses terrorist Vincent Volaju causing a tanker truck explosion, releasing a deadly pathogen, for which the government offers a 300 million bounty. The crew’s goal is to capture Vincent. Faye and Edward discover that Vincent used to be a soldier who was immune to the pathogen, but is now insane. Jet discovers the origin of nanomachines at Cherious Medical.

Spike encounters Chelios agent Erica and is thrown off a train by Vincent, who releases more nanomachines, leaving only Erica alive. She provides a blood sample for the vaccine, which Vincent plans to spread using giant Jack-O’-Lantern balloons in a Halloween parade.

Jet recruits crop-duster pilots to distribute the vaccine, while Faye manipulates the weather system. Spike duels Vincent, and despite the release of the nanomachines, he survives thanks to the vaccine. Erica shoots and kills Vincent, who expresses gratitude before dying.
