List of Dadasaheb Phalke Award Winners 2023: The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is given annually at the National Film Awards by the Directorate of Film Festivals, a body set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The winners are honoured for their “outstanding contribution to the growth of Indian cinema”. These winners are selected by a committee of prominent figures in the Indian film industry.

The latest Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival awards ceremony on Monday attracted many well-known Bollywood and television stars who were honored for their contributions to Indian cinema. Alia Bhatt won the Best Actress award for her performance in Gangubai Kathiawadi, and her husband won the Best Actor award for Brahmastra (Part 1: Shiva). The awards include a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medal, a shawl and a cash prize of 1,000,000 rupees ($13,000).

Why is India’s highest film award given in the name of Dadasaheb Phalke?
Dadasaheb Phalke’s real name was Dundiraj Govind Phalke. He was born on April 30, 1870 in Trimbak, Maharashtra, into a Marathi-speaking Chitpavan Brahmin family. He received training in acting and photography at the Sir JJ School of Arts in Bombay. After that, he went to Germany to study filmmaking. After returning to India, he made India’s first feature-length silent film, Raja Harishchandra. He was given the honorary title of “Father of Indian Cinema” for his sincere commitment and belief in cinema.
Later, the Indian government instituted the Dada Sahib Phalke Award in 1969 to recognize and reward the best performances in various categories that year in his memory of his outstanding contribution.
