In the year 1905, a man travels to a remote island to rescue his sister, who’s been kidnapped by a religious cult. Netflix picked up the film in March 2017, about a month before production began. It had its world premiere at the 2018 Fantastic Fest.

Apostle is a gothic horror film directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla), and is about a former missionary who returns home to find that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. What works so well about Apostle is how it builds the sense of dread through the atmosphere, forgoing standard horror film scares for something that digs a little deeper. It’s a brutal and often terrifying watch, but excels at what it sets out to do.

Dan Stevens is asked to do a lot in his role as Thomas Richardson, the former missionary who has lost his faith. It’s one of the most demanding roles of his career, and he knocks it out of the park, capturing the intensity of the character, and he commands attention in every scene that he is in. Over his illustrious career, Stevens has shown that he is an actor with a diverse range, and films like Apostle prove just that.

The Sea Beast is a wonderful animated adventure film that takes to the high seas to tell the story of a young orphan girl who joins the crew of a sea-monster hunter as they search for an elusive beast. The movie is playful and light, while also featuring some touching moments and beautifully animated action in spades. While it may feel a little conventional in its narrative, The Sea Beast features a delightful cast of characters.

A sequel to The Sea Beast is currently in development for Netflix.

This includes Dan Stevens who plays Admiral Hornagold, the main antagonist of the film, leader of The Crown’s Royal Navy and captain of The Imperator, the rival sea beast-hunting vessel. Stevens has played antagonists before, and he does so here as well, crafting a delightful thorn in the side of the crew, sucking up to the king and queen along the way.

Sense and Sensibility (2008)

Dan Stevens as Edward Ferrars

Dan Stevens in Sense and Sensibility

Sense and Sensibility is a 2008 BBC miniseries adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel of the same name. The story revolves around two sisters in 1800s England as they try to find love, and they couldn’t be more opposite. It isn’t the first adaptation of the novel, but it succeeds quite well, capturing the spirit of the source material with gorgeous cinematography and costuming, something BBC always excels at. It’s a touching story about the role of women in society and marriage.

Dan Stevens plays Edward Ferrars in all three episodes of the adaptation, the oldest of Fanny Dashwood’s two brothers. Edward develops an attachment and eventually marries Elinor Dashwood, the calm and proper sister, alongside Marianne, the passionate one. H is a key character in the story and Dan Stevens gives a spectacular performance as Edward, who is both honorable and shy.

Solar Opposites is a delightful animated series about a family of aliens that crash-land on Earth and are forced to stay in middle America, and continuously argue whether it is a good thing or not. It’s an incredibly charming show that is equally hilarious and sincere, making it one of the freshest American animated comedies to premiere in quite a while. Pop-culture references and meta-gags are featured heavily in the series, and the writing is so good that it never gets grating, thus elevating the humor even more.

I’m Your Man is a touching, science fiction romantic comedy about a woman named Alma, a scientist who participates in a study to live with a humanoid robot for three weeks in order to secure funding for her project. Given the rise of AI, I’m Your Man feels more timely than ever, and it is also a great romantic comedy in its own right, with a pair of great leads that touch on humorous and thought-provoking concepts with a lot of skill and care.

Dan Stevens plays the robot Tom in the film, and his performance is excellent, keeping all of that charm he has while doing something a little different. Examining what it means to be human, Stevens infuses a lot of humor and heart into his character, and viewers can’t help but be swept away by the heartwarming nature of it all. I’m Your Man is a great little gem of a film.

Love, Death & Robots is an entirely unique Netflix animated anthology series that explores one or more of the three titular concepts in each episode, diving into various genres like comedy, horror, science fiction, and fantasy. Every episode is able to stand on its own, and with them all having their own animation style, it remains visually arresting across all three of the show’s volumes. Love, Death & Robots particularly wears its cyberpunk influences on its sleeve, and it is better off for it.

Given that it is an anthology series, Dan Stevens only lends his voice to one episode called “Mason’s Rats”, playing Nigel, who is an extermination technician who installs a system of firearms to automatically take care of a farmer’s rat problem. Dan Stevens was perfect as David, who is often restrained by off-putting for a lot of the film. There is something delectably creepy about his performance, and as the cracks begin to show, he can be downright terrifying. The Boy and the Heron is simply magical, telling the story of Mahito, a boy who moves to the countryside after the death of his mother. There, he meets a mysterious, talking grey heron that leads him into a magical new world. Touted as legendary anime director Hayao Miyazaki’s last film, The Boy and the Heron is one of his best, winning Best Animated Picture at the Academy Awards, the second of his career. Empathetic, beautiful and poignant, animated films really don’t get better than this.

It’s hard to properly evaluate Dan Stevens in The Boy and the Heron, given that he has a tiny role in the English dub, but the story behind why he wanted to be in the movie is really great. Given that Stevens is a huge Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki fan, he told IndieWire that his love for the studio led to him taking the gig, and that it was “very cool to get a sneak preview of a new Miyazaki movie.” While he only voices a parakeet in The Boy and the Heron, it’s great that he was able to be part of what might be Hayao Miyazaki’s final swan song.

Legion was the first of two live-action “X-Men” shows to be released in 2017, coming out in February, while The Gifted premiered in October. Legion is a mind-bending, surrealist take on the comic book genre, starring Dan Stevens as David Haller, a man diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age and tries to harness his mutant powers while evading a government agency. The series is one of the best projects to feature Marvel’s X-Men characters, creating something wholly unique over the course of its three-season run.

Dan Stevens is really special in his role as David Haller, and is given a lot of complex material to work with. He knocks it out of the park, of course, diving into the inner workings of the character to create a truly unique protagonist in the world of comic book movies. The series is full of incredibly talented actors, and Dan Stevens outshines them all, really driving home just how good of a show Legion is.
