Dave Matthews was born on January 9, 1967 in Johannesburg, South Africa, the second youngest of four children, and went on to become a well-known figure in the music industry. His father, John, was a physicist at IBM. In 1974, he brought his family to Cambridge, England, and then returned to New York. Unfortunately, Matthews died of lung cancer in 1977 at the age of ten. Matthews was a world traveler in his early years, living in London and New York and influenced by his Quaker and pacifist upbringing.
In 1985, faced with possible conscription in South Africa, Matthews left the country permanently. After graduating from St. Stephen’s College in Johannesburg, he settled in Charlottesville in 1986, where he began his musical journey publicly. Working as a bartender at Miller’s Jazz Club in Charlottesville marked the beginning of his American chapter.
The formation of the Dave Matthews Band in Charlottesville in early 1991 marked a pivotal moment and reflected Matthews’ collaborative efforts with local musicians. By 2018, the band’s success had soared, with more than 25 million concert tickets sold and a total of 39 million CDs and DVDs sold.

He moved to New York at an early age and later returned south to Africa when his father died when he was 13. In 1986, he immigrated to the United States, settling in Charlottesville and eventually becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1980.
