The first state assembly election was held in 1952 in New Delhi, the capital of India. Chaudhry Brahman Prakash from the Indian National Congress was elected as the first Chief Minister, serving from March 17, 1952 to February 12, 1955.

Thereafter, elections are held every five years to elect the Chief Minister of Delhi. The current Chief Minister of Delhi is Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned on September 15, 2024.
