Bungie acquired the publishing rights from Activision in December 2018, making Destiny 2 an independent title.
Set in a captivating “mythic science fiction” world, Destiny 2 offers a shared-world environment with RPG elements.
Players engage in both player versus environment (PvE) and player versus player (PvP) activities.
The PvE content includes story missions, three-player “strikes,” six-player raids, and a free roam patrol mode with public events and NPC interactions. In PvP, players can participate in objective-based modes and traditional deathmatches.
As Guardians, the players’ characters wield the power of Light to protect humanity’s last safe city from various alien threats and the Darkness, a looming danger.
Destiny 2 continues to expand with various expansion packs that introduce new content and further the game’s narrative. The initial expansions were Curse of Osiris and Warmind in Year One, followed by Forsaken in Year Two, which significantly enhanced gameplay.
Year Three started with Shadowkeep in October 2019, marking a new era for the franchise. Alongside Shadowkeep, Destiny 2: New Light was released, offering a free-to-play version with access to the first two expansions and separate seasonal passes for each season’s content.
Year Four brought significant changes, with a large portion of the game’s content from the first three years placed in the Destiny Content Vault.
Beyond Light, the fifth expansion, introduced the power of Darkness to players, setting the stage for future expansions like The Witch Queen and Lightfall. A final chapter called The Final Shape will conclude the first saga of Destiny, known as the “Light and Darkness Saga,” before the start of a new saga.
Destiny 2 received generally positive reviews upon release, with critics praising its story improvements, gameplay mechanics, visuals, exploration aspects, multiplayer features, and public events.
However, there were varying opinions on weapon recategorization, the Leviathan raid, and some new game modes. The game earned nominations and awards at prestigious gaming events like The Game Awards 2017 and Game Critics Awards.
With its continuous updates and engaging gameplay, Destiny 2 has retained a dedicated player base and remains a significant title in the online gaming community.

Development of Destiny 2
After the release of the original Destiny in 2014, talks of a sequel began to surface. Activision’s CEO, Eric Hirshberg, mentioned a future full-game release in November 2014. The original plan was to release new, disc-based sequels every other year until 2019, with large downloadable expansions in between.
Initially planned for a September 2016 release, Bungie confirmed on February 11, 2016, that Destiny 2 would be released in 2017. Video game writer Christopher Schlerf, known for his work on Halo 4 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, joined Bungie during the same month.
In December 2016, it was announced that Vicarious Visions would join the development team alongside Activision. Rumors suggested that Destiny 2 would also release on Microsoft Windows, which was confirmed on March 30, 2017.
In Activision’s earnings report for 2016, Hirshberg stated that Destiny’s sequel was on track for a fall 2017 release and would broaden the franchise’s global reach. Bungie initially claimed that players’ characters and progression would carry over into future releases, but for Destiny 2, only physical appearances carried over.
On March 23, 2017, a promotional poster for Destiny 2 was leaked, revealing its release date as September 8, 2017, with a public beta for the game. A teaser trailer was released on March 27, followed by a full reveal trailer on March 30.
Destiny 2’s gameplay was showcased through a live stream on May 18. The game’s release date was moved up to September 6, 2017, and the Windows version was confirmed for an October 24 release.
Grimoire cards, present in the original Destiny, did not return for the sequel, as Bungie shifted its focus to in-game storytelling. The game featured in-depth lore accessible through various artifacts and gear.
Destiny 2’s original score was composed by a team of talented composers, aiming to capture the emotions of the game’s universe.
Overall, Destiny 2’s development involved multiple stages and collaborations to create a compelling sequel with enhanced storytelling and gameplay improvements.
