The game was originally published by Activision until December 2018, marking the transfer of publishing rights for the series to Bungie. Set in a “mythical sci-fi” world, Destiny 2 blends multiplayer and role-playing elements, splitting activities into player versus environment (PvE) and player versus player (PvP) game types.
The Guardians, the player characters, wield the power of light to protect the last safe city on Earth from alien threats and the looming darkness. The story unfolds through expansions, and major changes in the fourth year move content into the Destiny content library.
Year 4 begins with Beyond Light, introducing the forces of darkness and laying the foundation for subsequent expansions – The Witch Queen in 2022, Lightfall in 2023, and the final chapter, The Final Form.

Destiny 2 Gameplay
Destiny 2, like its predecessor, blends elements of first-person shooters with role-playing and massively multiplayer online (MMO) features. In the original Destiny, a dynamic matchmaking system facilitated instant connections, limiting player interactions to those who were “matched” in the game.
Before the later introduction of in-game text chat, interacting with others required using the console’s messaging system. Destiny 2 introduced a refined matchmaking method called “Guided Play,” which gave players the opportunity to find clans seeking more members for raids.
The game divides the campaign into Player vs. Environment (PvE) and Player vs. Player (PvP) game modes, a structure reminiscent of the original Destiny. This setup ensures a diverse gaming experience with a variety of challenges and engagements both in cooperative and competitive aspects.
Destiny 2 is dedicated to enhancing the player’s journey by optimizing communication and matchmaking, building on the foundation laid by its predecessor and introducing new features to deliver a richer, more immersive gaming experience.

A sequel was mentioned when Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed the progress of Destiny’s development in November 2014, just two months after the original game’s release. The original plan called for disc-based sequels to be released every two years until 2019, with a number of downloadable expansion packs released in between.
The game was originally scheduled to be released in September 2016, but Bungie confirmed on February 11, 2016 that a full sequel would be released in 2017. In December 2016, Bungie welcomed Vicarious Visions and Activision to the development team.
On March 30, 2017, it was rumored that Destiny 2 would be coming to Microsoft Windows, a departure from the original version. The game was released worldwide on September 6, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and on October 24 for Microsoft Windows.
The standard base game comes with various editions, including the Collector’s Edition, Limited Edition, and Digital Deluxe Edition. A pre-order bonus, the Expansion Pass, provides early access to the first two expansion packs. Sony’s exclusive deal continued, providing exclusive content to the PlayStation 4 until the end of 2018, and ended in October 2019 with the Shadowkeep expansion pack.
