To prepare for the role, MacDonald worked with opera coaches in Los Angeles, Canada, and Scotland to improve her singing skills and make her performances seem more realistic. Although MacDonald did not sing the songs herself, she still had to sing them live during filming in order to lip sync with the dubbing parts.
MacDonald performed convincingly, even though the songs were sometimes beyond her vocal range. Singing live in front of the crew was a nerve-wracking experience for her, but she found ways to build her confidence, such as turning up the music loudly during filming.
While MacDonald is no stranger to musical roles, having received acclaim for her performance in the rap-themed film Patti Cake$, she has found that both rap and opera require dedication. Despite the differences in genre, she believes music has a way of bringing people together and evoking emotions, and even though she hasn’t sung the songs herself, her experience in Figaro was fulfilling.
