Does Nightingale run on Steam Deck?

Yes, technically Nightingale can be launched and played on Steam Deck. However, it is important to note that it is not considered officially supported at the time of release. This means that customer support for issues related to Steam Deck will not be provided, as it is currently considered an unofficial platform. The development team is actively working towards full support for Steam Deck and will provide updates once the status is confirmed.

If you happen to own a Steam Deck, you are still welcome to use Nightingale and provide valuable feedback or bug reports. It is helpful to disclose that you are playing on a Steam Deck so that the internal team can easily reproduce any issues you may encounter. It is also worth mentioning that other versions of Linux are not officially supported at this time, but the team is willing to accept bug reports with details about the specific version that encounters the problem.

Nightingale pre-release update

HUD Updates

In case you missed our developer update video, we announced some changes to our UI based on feedback and observations from server stress testing. Some key changes:

  • The hotbar now starts at 1-0 (can be re-bound in settings), the default 1-5 keys are still for the main hand (character’s right hand), and the off hand (character’s left hand) is still linked to the 6-0 keys by default
  • Changed the status bar display, added icons for each status
  • If no operation or survival pressure is triggered for a short period of time, the HUD will disappear

Other UI updates

  • Gear items (gear, quickbar) no longer show up in your inventory
  • You can drag and drop items from your inventory to your hotbar and vice versa
  • When inactive, the stamina bar is not visible
  • Crafting recipes have been changed to text instead of cards
  • When in a menu, additional menu screen options appear in the top bar
  • Damage numbers are no longer displayed by default. You can toggle it back in Settings

There are also some UI related updates:

  • Press the “H” key to put the item into your hand
  • You can now activate Streamer Mode in the Settings menu. This will prevent your character name from being displayed while you play (thus saving creators from being bombarded with party invites when viewers see their name)

We’ll continue to refine and update the UI as we move into Early Access, so please let us know how you discover updated features.

Controller support

As we quickly adjusted the front-end UI presentation and integrated various back-end features in less than a week, there was an impact on controller functionality. At the time of the Early Access release, it will be possible to play the game with a controller, but you may need to use keyboard or mouse input occasionally. We will work hard to integrate full controller support as soon as possible in a future update.

Although it is not yet in its final form, please feel free to provide feedback during the Early Access period.

We’ve updated our Accessibility page and Store page to reflect these changes.

Delete FSR3

After reviewing crash data from server stress tests, a significant portion of the data seems to point to FSR3 integration, regardless of whether the user has the setting enabled.

To ensure better stability, we have temporarily removed FSR3 from release builds and are working with various external and internal teams to see if we can implement it or older FSR builds in a future update.

We have added an update to the Performance Expectations blog to reflect this change.

For those who wish to use XeSS or DLSS, those features will still be available at launch.

Nightingale Gameplay

Nightingale is an immersive and colorful game experience set in a post-apocalyptic world. After a catastrophic event on Earth, interdimensional travelers seek refuge in procedurally generated realms. Players will play as one of these travelers and explore the enchanted wonderland of Nightingale. Nightingale draws inspiration from the Victorian era and combines elements of gaslight fantasy and steampunk aesthetics to present a visually stunning and unique setting.

Survival is key in Nightingale, as players must forage for food, rest to restore strength, and gather resources to craft necessary tools. Crafting ranges from simple items like sheets, which provide rest without shelter, to more advanced items like umbrellas, which allow players to glide through the air like Mary Poppins. Combat plays a major role, and players can use melee weapons or firearms to fend off hostile mobs. However, not all mobs are aggressive, and some will only retaliate if provoked.

The game also introduces non-player characters, including iconic literary figures such as Victor Frankenstein and Mr. Hyde, who offer quests and aid players during combat and resource gathering. Nightingale offers a variety of gameplay options, including dungeon crawling and raid-style combat, ensuring there is always something exciting to explore.

Dedicated servers allow players to travel between realms, allowing them to explore different biomes such as deserts, woodlands, and swamps. The world customization aspect adds depth, as players can use cards to tailor the realm to their liking and determine what resources are available.
