Dragon Quest 5 Walkthrough, Guide, Gameplay, and More

Dragon Quest 5

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is a role-playing video game, part of the Dragon Quest series. It was originally released in Japan in 1992 for the Super Famicom console. However, it failed to make it to the U.S. due to programming challenges. The game was later remastered for the PlayStation 2 (Japan only) in 2004, followed by the Nintendo DS in 2008 (Japan) and 2009 (worldwide). The story tells the protagonist’s life journey from birth to marriage and family. One notable feature introduced by the game was the ability to recruit monsters into the player’s party in random encounters, a concept that would later appear in games like Pokémon and Digimon . Additionally, Dragon Quest V is considered the first game to feature pregnancy, influencing future games such as The Sims 2 and Fable II. In 2019, the animated film adaptation “Dragon Quest: Your Story” was released in Japan and later released globally on Netflix.

To recruit monsters, meet Monty in Fortuna and purchase the carriage. Recruitment usually depends on your level and game progress. Some monsters can only be recruited at certain points or levels. Monsters may randomly join your team based on luck. Manage monsters’ spells, abilities, armor, and weapons. When the carriage is full, store the unwanted monsters at Monty’s place. Initially, the Slime Knight makes an excellent recruit due to its healing spells and statistics.

Dragon Quest V gameplay

Dragon Quest V follows typical RPG mechanics, including leveling up through combat, turn-based combat, and equipping weapons and armor. A unique additional feature is the ability to recruit and upgrade monsters in the player’s party, which number up to 71 in the PlayStation 2 remake.
