Draupadi Murmu is a tribal chief from Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Draupadi Murmu is a soft-spoken leader who has worked his way into Odisha politics. After winning the 2022 presidential election, she became the first tribe and the second woman to hold the top office. She is running against Yashwant Sinha, a candidate jointly nominated by the United Opposition for the top constitutional post.

Draupadi Murmu husband, personal life, education, family
Draupadi Murmu was born on June 20, 1958, in a Santhali tribal family of Biranchi Narayan Tudu in Uparbeda village in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Her father and grandfather were village chiefs under the Panchayati Raj Systems.
Draupadi Murmu was married to banker Shyam Charan Murmu, who died in 2014. The couple had two sons, both deceased, and a daughter, Itishri Murmu.
Draupadi Murmu Teaching Career
Droupadi Murmu started out as a school teacher and later entered state politics. Murmu worked as an assistant professor at Shri Aurobindo Institute of Integrated Education and Research, Rairangpur, and as a junior assistant in the Irrigation Department, Government of Odisha.
Draupadi Murmu’s political career
Draupadi Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1997 and was elected as the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat MP. In 2000, she became the president of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat and served as the national vice-president of the Scheduled Tribe Morcha of the BJP.

Draupadi Murmu: Governor of Jharkhand
Draupadi Murmu was sworn in as the Governor of Jharkhand on May 18, 2015, becoming the first female Governor of Jharkhand. She was the first female tribal leader in Odisha to be appointed as the governor of an Indian state.
In 2017, Draupadi Murmu, while serving as the Jharkhand Governor, refused to give his assent to a bill approved by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly that sought to amend the Chhota Nagpur Tenancy Act, 1908 and the Santal Pal, 1949 Ghana Tenancy Act”.
The bill seeks to give tribes the right to use their lands for commercial purposes while ensuring that land ownership does not change.
Draupadi Murmu: NDA 2022 presidential candidate
In June 2022, Draupadi Murmu was nominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party as the National Democratic Alliance candidate to participate in the 2022 Indian presidential election. As part of her 2022 presidential campaign, she has visited several states across the country to seek support for her candidacy from BJP legislators and other opposition parties.
Draupadi Murmu visited the northeastern states and many prominent opposition parties including Odisha BJD, Jharkhand JMM Party, Maharashtra Shiv Sena, Uttar Pradesh BSP, Karnataka JDS etc. extended their support to her .
Draupadi Murmu sworn in as 15th President of India
Draupadi Murmu was sworn in as the 15th President of India on July 25, 2022. She was sworn in by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana at the Central Hall of Parliament. Outgoing Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and Draupadi Murmu arrived in Parliament during a ceremonial procession shortly before the swearing-in began.
In her speech, President Draupadi Murmu thanked members of Congress and MLAs for electing her as India’s first tribal president. “I am the first president of a country born in independent India. We must accelerate our efforts to meet the expectations of our freedom fighters,” she said in her first speech as president of the world’s largest democracy, a citizen of independent India. “
