Emily Osment
got her start in the industry in the late 1990s when her older brother, Haley Joel Osment, was also interested in acting, but her best movie and TV roles are all from later years in her career. Osment has an interesting acting career because she was able to successfully transition from projects aimed at children to projects aimed at adults very quickly compared to some of her peers. In addition to her work in movies and television, she is also a musician and has released music for some of her on-screen projects as well.

Though she has appeared in dramas as well as comedies, sitcoms appear to be where Osment’s acting style is the best fit. Osment has a knack for comedic timing and physical comedy that is nearly unmatched in her age group. That is part of what has allowed her to be a scene stealer in roles as a child and an adult. Osment’s best roles in movies and TV shows are largely ones that show off her comedic skills, though there are some dramas sprinkled in.

In the mid-200s, Hannah Montana was the biggest property on the Disney Channel. That’s why it makes sense that, much like Lizzie McGuire years earlier, the series got a feature film. The film was released in the middle of the series, however, instead of when the series had been canceled.
Hannah Montana: The Movie sees Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) sent home to Tennessee to reconnect with her roots after her life as pop singer Hannah Montana gets out of control. There, she connects with her family, but she also reconnects with her music, penning a new song that demonstrates she understands how much her behavior has changed. At first, Lilly is angry with Miley because her own birthday party is one of the things ruined by Hannah Montana, but she joins Miley in Tennessee and the two reconnect.
Osment plays Lilly who, in the series, is often relegated to the role of comic relief. Here, she gets to be a bit more authentic in her support of her best friend as she tries to help Miley. The movie is a nice change of pace from the more frenetic family movies Osment was in at the time, demonstrating that she had a depth other child actors might not.

One of many comedy series that Osment has been a part of is Pretty Smart. The show was canceled after only one season, but if given the chance to find its footing, it could have been a success.
Chelsea (Osment), a Harvard graduate and aspiring novelist finds herself moving in with her sister and her sister’s roommates, but she is very different from them. While Chelsea has always been academically gifted, her sister and her sister’s roommates are more focused on their appearance, leading to a clash of opposites in the 10-episode series.
Some of the criticisms of the show involve that it relies on stereotypes, but it appears that the series might have been heading toward a direction in which it would be breaking down those stereotypes. Pretty Smart focuses on the differences between Chelsea and the others and just how she misjudges them because of their focus on their appearance. Osment has her fantastic comedic timing here, and the show could have used it to its advantage if Netflix had given it future seasons.

Cyberbully (2011)
As Taylor Hillridge
Made-for-TV movies have a reputation for their more dramatic moments being a little too cheesy. While Cyberbully does have some of those, it’s also got a powerful performance from Emily Osment.
The movie follows Osment’s Taylor after she receives a laptop from her mother as a gift. Excited to finally be using the computer out from under the watchful eye of her mother, Taylor finds herself targeted by online harassment after her brother posts a fake message posing as her and someone else lies about her sexual experience online. Because her classmates are also online, the online harassment bleeds into her real life, causing her to consider taking her own life and entering a support group.
The movie has a lot of over-the-top moments, but Osment is perfect in her role. As Taylor, she rapidly unravels under the weight of so much harassment and bullying. She paints a very real picture of what young people online can go through every day, and her part in the movie helped open up a dialogue about cyberbullying having real consequences.
The movie was nominated for five Canadian Screen Awards, winning one for Emily Osment’s performance.

Though Osment has been acting since she was a small child and has plenty of experience in both comedy and drama, she is clearly born for sitcoms.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is the second spin-off in The Big Bang Theory franchise. Osment’s Mandy made her first appearance in the first spin-off before getting her own series.
The sitcom follows the titular characters after they get married and move in with Mandy’s parents and their baby. The story begins in 1994 as a sequel to Young Sheldon and is something of a coming-of-age story for the couple as they grow in their relationship and as parents. As the audience will likely know from The Big Bang Theory, however, their marriage does not last, so this early look into their time as newlyweds will eventually not have a happy ending.
Though Osment has been acting since she was a small child and has plenty of experience in both comedy and drama, she is clearly born for sitcoms. Osment has the gift of comedic timing and delivery that few have, which is why this relatively new show is one of her best tv series.

For those at all interested in what it means to be an actor, The Kominsky Method provides a humorous take on the nitty-gritty of it all. The series follows an aging acting coach (Michael Douglas) while he teaches an acting class. Though he had brief success as an actor himself in his earlier years, he spends his time helping to make others successful now. It’s an interesting look at what it means to be aging in an industry that prizes youth.
Osment does not have a large role in the series in the sense that she is not playing one of the characters who is often singled out for larger stories. Because of the nature of the show, however, there is a large ensemble, which includes Osment, who are learning their craft. Her character is one of the students of the title character, and she gets to employ some subtle comedy and great timing here.
While most of the acting nods from major award shows went to Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin for the series, the ensemble was repeatedly nominated by the Screen Actors Guild for their work in the show.

Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara are undoubtedly the stars of the original Spy Kids movies. One thing the movies are great at establishing, however, is that they are not the only children to take on spycraft in families where their parents are international spies. The Spy Kids franchise is a sprawling and fun universe that does not take itself too seriously and it is just as entertaining for adults as it is for kids.
The second movie in the franchise involves some competition for the main characters in the way of the Giggles siblings. A mysterious island full of genetically modified animals becomes the main battleground as the sets of siblings fight for being the ones to take on a prestigious mission.
Osment plays Gertie Giggles, the younger sister of the competing agents. She is initially smug and sure of her abilities before eventually being able to admit that she needs help. Gertie also becomes an ally of the main characters as she is willing to admit her brother’s betrayal and her father’s bad actions. Gertie is a great addition to the franchise, but the third movie sees her only appear in a short scene, so this movie is where Osment gets to have the most fun in the role.

Dead End: Paranormal Park combines elements of fantasy and horror to create a fun and inclusive animated series with characters of various genders and ethnicities, even allowing different mental health issues to be highlighted. The show is inspired by Hamish Steele’s graphic novel series Dead Endia. Unfortunately, the show only lasted for two seasons before it was canceled.

The series kicks off when a transgender teen gets a job at an amusement park and decides to take up residence in the haunted house to avoid the complicated relationship he has with his family. He and a teenage girl on the autism spectrum become friends while working together and also end up meeting a demon who has been blending in by pretending to be part of the haunted house attraction.
Osment plays the demon known as Courtney. Though Courtney is thousands of years old, she fits right in with the teens. She has been taking orders from a higher-ranking demon in the hope that she will eventually be able to go home. Osment, who has done a lot of voiceover work in her career, mostly for Disney’s networks, is right at home in an animated project. Her comedic skills come through with her voice as well as they do with her physical performance in sitcoms.

This is the show that provided Osment with the foundation for her comedic work.
Though Emily Osment started working in the late 1990s as a child performer, Hannah Montana is likely the project most people, especially millennials or anyone with access to Disney+ today, will recognize her from. Osment’s big break was playing the best friend to Miley Cyrus’ character.
The series follows Miley Stewart, who is a normal teen by day, but dons a wig and stylish clothing to become the pop star Hannah Montana. A double life is supposed to allow her to maintain her privacy and still have a relatively normal childhood. What she finds, however, is that navigating both worlds can come with a lot of pressure.

The very first episode of Hannah Montana involves Lilly finding out that her best friend is secretly a pop star. Lilly is initially hurt that the secret was kept from her, especially since Hannah Montana is her favorite pop artist. Once the show gets beyond that, however, Lilly gets to have her own secret identity as Lola Luftnagle who accompanies Hannah to different events.
This is the show that provided Osment with the foundation for her comedic work. There is plenty of physical comedy, one-liners, and changes in tone for the kids in the show to keep up with. During the show’s run, it also boasted some impressive guest stars like Carol Burnett, Dolly Parton, and Jon Cryer whom the cast could learn from. Hannah Montana is one of Osment’s best TV shows because it is what gave her all the makings of a sitcom star.
Hannah Montana was nominated four years in a row for an Emmy for Oustanding Children’s Program.

She proves herself to be a modern-day Carol Burnett or Lucille Ball…
Young And Hungry was the first big project Osment had after Hannah Montana came to an end. While she did movies in between the two and attended college, Young And Hungry was Osment’s first television show where she was the lead instead of the supporting best friend character. It proved she could carry a show.
Young And Hungry follows a young woman who is an aspiring chef. Though she has impressive skills, she does not have great finances, so she has trouble getting her career off the ground. She becomes the personal chef for the owner of a tech company – and has a complicated on-and-off-again romantic relationship with him throughout the show.
Osment is energetic and charming in the role. She proves herself to be a modern-day Carol Burnett or Lucille Ball because she is always ready with the punchline, impeccable comedic timing, and not afraid of physical comedy. The show itself rests somewhere between a family sitcom on Disney and a more adult sitcom on network television, allowing it to capture that audience sweet spot of teens and young adults.
Gabi Diamond is inspired by real-life food blogger Gabi Moskowtiz.

For those adults who do not know Osment from her Hannah Montana or Young and Hungry days, they might know her from her most recent television project. Osment joined Young Sheldon, a Big Bang Theory spin-off (and prequel) series in the fifth season. While she was initially recurring in season five, she was bumped up to series regular in season six and remained with the show until it ended and her own spin-off series began.
Young Sheldon follows the titular character during his childhood in Texas. This is the same Sheldon from Big Bang Theory as Jim Parsons’ narrations allow the audience to know. While the show fleshes out Sheldon’s childhood stories from the flagship series, it also allows the entire Cooper family to shine as an ensemble.
When Osment joins the show in season 5, her character lies about her age, and at 29, accidentally ends up in a relationship with a 17-year-old, who has also lied about his age. Despite the age gap and their very different ideas about life, the two have a daughter and get married by the end of the series.
Osment’s place in Young Sheldon is very different than her roles in most other sitcoms. While she’s a supporting player, she is not the person with the most one-liners. She is often playing the “straight man” in scenes where other people are getting to make the jokes. It offers a different perspective on Osment’s acting abilities as she is just as adept at holding an ensemble together as she is being the one making everyone laugh. With her long career, Young Sheldon proves to be Emily Osment’s best TV series so far.
