Anya Taylor-Joy’s most popular Netflix original series is The Queen’s Gambit. In The Queen’s Gambit, Taylor-Joy plays Beth Harmon, a chess prodigy who struggles with several tragedies in her personal life. The miniseries follows Beth as she grows up in an orphanage, hones her preternatural chess abilities, and tries to juggle being the best chess player in the world with the challenges of being a single woman in the 1960s. It’s also one of her most acclaimed performances, as Taylor-Joy won three separate best actress awards for The Queen’s Gambit: a People’s Choice Award, a Golden Globe, and a SAG Award.

Though she wasn’t an original cast member, Anya Taylor-Joy added quite a bit to Peaky Blinders when she joined the show in 2019. Taylor-Joy began playing Gina Gray, Michael Gray’s (Finn Cole) wife, in Peaky Blinders season 5. She was one of the few American actors in the series at that point, and she became a regular on the show through the ending of Peaky Blinders season 6. There’s currently no telling if Taylor-Joy will join the cast of the Peaky Blinders movie, as her involvement in the film hasn’t been confirmed.

Anya Taylor-Joy’s only Netflix original film was 2016’s Barry, not to be confused with Bill Hader’s black comedy series, which came just a year after her breakthrough role in The Witch. Barry is a biopic movie about former President Barack Obama’s early life at Columbia College. Taylor-Joy plays Charlotte in Barry, though her character is a mixture of the several different women Obama dated during his collegiate career. Barry is also a bit unusual among biopic films, as it was released while Obama was still the sitting President of the United States. Despite its timing, Barry received 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Anya Taylor-Joy famously took over Charlize Theron’s Mad Max: Fury Road character for the franchise’s latest installment, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Furiosa follows Taylor-Joy’s titular character as she grows up in the Wasteland, fights for her independence in several different warlords’ captivity, and eventually becomes a legendary warrior. Despite boasting both Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in leading roles, continuing one of the most beloved action franchises in film history, and achieving widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike, Furiosa bombed at the box office. Luckily, it set records for video on demand sales and streaming metrics.

Anya Taylor-Joy’s most recent addition to Netflix’s streaming catalog was her 2022 horror-comedy The Menu. It follows Taylor-Joy as Margot, an average woman invited on a date to a world-renowned chef’s private island for a luxury meal, and one that turns violent very quickly. Taylor-Joy led The Menu alongside co-stars Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult, and the combination of actors proved to be a success. The Menu holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%, and many critics and viewers praised the film’s dark humor and biting societal critiques.

Anya Taylor-Joy rarely takes voice acting roles, but one of her three voice acting credits came in a Netflix original show. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance features Taylor-Joy voicing Brea, one of three Gelflings who start a planet-wide rebellion. There’s also a lot to love about The Dark Crystal. As a legacy sequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 film of the same name, it features the same iconic puppetry the legendary creator of The Muppets was known for. It also features a star-studded cast aside from Anya Taylor-Joy, such as Mark Hamill, Taron Egerton, and Helena Bonham Carter, among many others.
