Clint Eastwood was one of the biggest movie stars of the 1970s and had several career-defining roles throughout this decade. Coming off his breakout success as The Man with No Name in Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy during the 1960s, Eastwood would not slow down in the following decade as he branched out into action movies, comedies, dramas, and thrillers. With an unmatched onscreen charisma and a tough-guy reputation, Eastwood’s 1970s filmography may just be the perfect encapsulation of his entire career.

In the 1970s, Eastwood continued to play tough Western gunslingers and even led a brand new franchise as Inspector Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry series. While this decade saw some extraordinary highs, it also featured several low points as some comedies and action releases failed to make the same impact as his greatest works. A true icon of the 1970s and beyond, Eastwood even carved out a second career as a director during this time and was among the most impactful performers of the decade.

While the idea of an offbeat comedy starring Clint Eastwood and his pet orangutan named Clyde may sound like the contents of a strange fever dream, this was actually a real movie released in 1978. As an interesting juxtaposition to Eastwood’s stern and serious tough persona in roles like The Man with No Name and Dirty Harry, there was something oddly engaging about the wacky antics seen in this strange story of love and revenge. While Every Which Way but Loose was the bottom rung of Eastwood’s 1970s work, the 1980 sequel Any Which Way You Can was far worse.

Clint Eastwood directed himself in the action thriller The Gauntlet, a story about a down-and-out cop in love with a prostitute. With Eastwood’s character escorting his love interest from Las Vegas to Phoenix to testify against the mob, in a development that surprised absolutely nobody, plenty of characters do everything in their power to make sure they don’t make it there alive. The Gauntlet was silly and over-the-top but maintained a certain charm as a love-it-or-hate-it type of movie.

The Eiger Sanction saw Clint Eastwood play an art history professor, mountain climber, and former assassin blackmailed by his secret government agency employers into coming back for one last job. With a disappointing screenplay and lackluster performances, the most impressive thing about The Eiger Sanction was the picturesque visuals of its climbing scenes in the Swiss mountains. This Eastwood action movie did not have the urgency of the star and director’s best work in the genre but still contained enough enjoyable sequences to make it worth seeking out for those who love Eastwood’s unique action-hero persona.

Clint Eastwood had some incredible Western movies from the 1970s, and one of the least spoken-about releases was Joe Kidd. This saw Eastwood portray an ex-bounty hunter hired to track down a Mexican revolutionary fighting for land reforms. As an incredible example of the revisionist Western film, Joe Kidd took many of the tenets of classic Western movies that had been taken for granted and delved deeper into the morality behind them. While Eastwood had better Westerns before and after this one, Joe Kidd was still an interesting addition to his Wild West filmography.

The World War II heist film Kelly’s Heroes starred Clint Eastwood as the leader of a crew of American GIs trying to rob a French bank of their Nazi gold. As a genre-bending war film that acted as a pointed satire on modern military efforts, Kelly’s Heroes had a clever subtext imbued in its hybrid narrative that went between a heist caper and a battlefield action war movie. While some of the humor may not stand up to today’s standards, Kelly’s Heroes was a witty, lighthearted adventure that highlighted Eastwood’s often underappreciated comedic talents.

By the third entry in the Dirty Harry series, The Enforcer, this franchise had started to embrace its more comedic side with witty dialogue and a high level of violence. Inspector Harry Callahan was still an engaging anti-hero as he teamed up with a rookie female inspector to take down a gang of terrorists made up of Vietnam veterans, yet this remained the series’ weakest entry in the 1970s. The Beguiled was a Southern Gothic Western that incorporated elements of a psychological thriller to explore the story of a recovering Union soldier who found his way into the hearts of the women in a Confederate girls’ boarding school. As a hypnotic Civil War drama, the women in The Beguiled were complex as the film propagated a strange, schizophrenic air of suppressed sexual hysteria.
