Patty Jenkins has had one of the most fascinating careers in Hollywood over the past two decades. The incredibly talented filmmaker’s debut film, Monster, was a crowning achievement that earned Charlize Theron a Best Actress Oscar. While she spent the next several years directing top-tier television, it surprisingly took Jenkins 14 years for her to make her next movie: 2017’s Wonder Woman. That film became a huge cultural phenomenon, even leading to Jenkins being named #7 on Time Magazine’s Person of the Year list.

Jenkins returned for Wonder Woman 1984, which had the misfortune of being released during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, she has been working to get her Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron, off the ground and was recently attached to a new LEGO project at Universal. The outspoken Jenkins has never been shy about her feelings regarding how women are treated in Hollywood. There is no doubt that she is a true visionary — resilient, strong, and uncompromising in her vision, much like the characters she brings to life in her diverse work.

Betrayal (2013)
Jenkins Directed The Pilot Episode For This ABC Drama
Patty Jenkins directed the first episode of the ABC drama Betrayal, which premiered on September 29th, 2013. The series, which lasted only one season, was a steamy soap centered on Sara (Hannah Ware) and Jack (Stuart Townsend) a couple embroiled in an affair. Their torrid relationship becomes even more complicated when Sara’s husband, Drew (Chris Johnson), and Jack end up on opposing sides of a murder trial.
While Jenkins brings visual style to a standard broadcast pilot and gets good performances from the cast, it’s not surprising that Betrayal had a short lifespan. The show feels like a misbegotten mashup of other hit shows from the time, such as Revenge, Scandal, and The Good Wife. For a show about an affair, it is surprisingly tame and likely would have worked better on cable, where it could have pushed the boundaries of its concept.

Five (2011)
Patty Jenkins Directed The Short Film Pearl For This Anthology
“Pearl” is a short film that Patty Jenkins directed as part of an anthology project for the Lifetime Network titled Five. Each segment explores the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives. The shorts were all directed by notable talent, including Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, Alicia Keyes, and Penelope Spheeris. The project was such a success that Lifetime released a follow-up in 2013.
Jenkins’ film follows an oncologist (Jeanne Tripplehorn) who, after dedicating her career to treating cancer parties and witnessing her mother succumb to the disease, is forced to confront her own breast cancer diagnosis. It was inspired by Spider-Man and Pretty Woman producer Laura Ziskin (via WebMD), who passed away from breast cancer in 2011. The all-star cast features performances by Bob Newhart, Alan Ruck, and Jeffrey Tambor. “Pearl” is an emotional and powerful short film that is definitely worth seeking out.

I Am The Night (2019)
Patty Jenkins Directed The First Two Episodes Of This TNT Limited Series
Patty Jenkins directed the first two parts of this limited series for TNT, created by Sam Sheridan (Jenkins’ husband). It reunited her with Chris Pine, whom she previously directed in the Wonder Woman films. Set in 1965, Pine plays Jay Singletary, a disgraced journalist who helps an adopted teenage girl investigate her biological family, uncovering that her grandfather might have ties to the infamous Black Dahlia murders.
Pine is fantastic as the damaged Jay, exuding charisma and convincingly embodying a classic noir protagonist. Jenkins fully immerses herself in directing period Los Angeles, bringing the city’s 1960s charm vividly to life. Her episodes are a visual feast, showcasing stunning cinematography and featuring authentic LA landmarks. While I Am the Night is confusing at times, fans of period detective dramas and true crime will find it worth catching up on.

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Jenkins’ Sequel To The Massive Blockbuster Didn’t Live Up To Expectations
It was always going to be a near-impossible feat for Wonder Woman 1984 to live up to its predecessor. The 2017 film was universally acclaimed and earned over $800 million worldwide. However, Wonder Woman 1984 faced harsh reviews from both critics and fans when it was released on Christmas Day of 2020 in both theaters and HBO Max.
Wonder Woman 1984 swaps the first film’s WWI setting for the vibrant neon-soaked aesthetic of the 1980s. In the film, Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) comes in contact with the Dreamstone, a mythical artifact that grants wishes. This leads to her accidentally bringing back Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), in the story’s most controversial plot line, while Diana simultaneously faces off against Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah, who are also influenced by the Dreamstone.
The film isn’t as bad as some critics and online fans made it out to be, but it does struggle under the weight of too many plot lines. Gal Gadot continues to shine in the role and there are plenty of fun and creative set pieces. However, the less said about the visual effects for Cheetah and Steve’s ridiculous subplot the better. If Wonder Woman 1984 had been released exclusively to theaters, it might have been received more favorably, but it probably still would have been divisive due to the audience’s expectations.

Entourage (2004-2011)
Season 3, Episode 5, “Crash and Burn” & Season 3, Episode 8, “The Release”
While many people might argue that HBO’s Entourage has not aged well, there’s no denying its impact. The series, which follows movie star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) navigating Hollywood with the help of his three best friends and his agent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven), was a massive success with both critics and audiences.
Entourage became a cultural touchstone of the early 2000s and remains one of HBO’s highest-rated comedy shows on IMDb. Patty Jenkins may seem like an unusual choice to direct episodes of the series, given how different it is from Monster, the credit she was best known for at the time. However, the two episodes she directed are both ridiculously entertaining, bringing a fun energy and cinematic flair to the series.
Jenkins’ first episode, season 3, episode 5, “Crash and Burn”, showcases all of Entourage‘s trademarks— fast cars, great director cameos (Hello, Penny Marshall!), and even a bit of genuine drama. Vince faces a tough choice when the production dates for his Pablo Escobar film Medillian conflict with Aquaman 2. Meanwhile, Turtle’s career gets a boost when Vince helps get his rapper client Saigon to get radio play, and Ari gets a hilarious subplot involving his daughter dating his arch nemesis, child star Max Ballard.

Her second episode, season 3, episode 8, “The Release”, is just as strong. Vince and Billy Walsh fight back against a more commercial cut of their indie film Queens Blvd., while Drama gets his best storylines of the season when he auditions for a new pilot from real-life director Edward Burns, who plays himself. While these episodes might not compare to Jenkins’ more noteworthy work, she delivered top-notch episodes that remain fan favorites.

The Killing (2011-2014)
Season 1, Episode 1 “Pilot” & Season 2, Episode 13 “What I Know”
There was no more exciting network in the early 2000s than AMC, as it broke into scripted programming with groundbreaking series such as Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead. In 2011, AMC added Veena Sud’s murder mystery The Killing to its roster. Patty Jenkins directed the pilot for The Killing and later returned to direct the season 2 finale. While not a cultural phenomenon like some other AMC shows, it still enjoyed a respectable four-season run (three on AMC and one on Netflix).
The series, based on the Danish series Forbydelsen, follows Seattle detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) as they investigate the murder of teenager Rosie Larsen. A show often compared to Twin Peaks, The Killing has a unique structure, offering unique perspectives on the case, including insights into Rose’s grieving parents, and the impact of the case on the local mayor’s race.
Jenkins excels at directing the pilot, establishing a distinct visual palette for the series. She masterfully captures the gloomy rain-soaked atmosphere of Seatle, making the city feel like a character in the series. The two leads’ performances are also exquisite. Both actors bring a unique energy that immediately differentiates them from the countless other TV detectives. Jenkins returned for The Killing season 2 finale, which finally revealed who murdered Rosie a delayed resolution that frustrated many viewers.

Arrested Development (2003-2019)
Season 2, Episode 2, The One Where They Build A House
Arrested Development is one of the most beloved sitcoms of the 2000s. The series, centered on the dysfunctional Bluth family, was celebrated for its unique structure, rapid-fire jokes, and brilliant callbacks to previous episodes. With one of the greatest casts ever assembled for a television series, the show remains a comedic masterpiece. Patty Jenkins directed season 2, episode 2, “The One Where They Build a House”. While it’s another outlier in her filmography, Jenkins delivers a laugh-out-loud episode featuring some of the funniest gags the series ever produced.
Like most of Arrested Development, this episode is densely packed, weaving multiple storylines into 20 minutes of chaos. Michael and Gob are tasked with creating a fake model home to satisfy the board, Buster discovers that his mother is having an affair with his Uncle Oscar and decides to go off to war, and Lindsay’s open marriage with Tobias gets competitive, so she decides to start dating an unhoused man — who turns out to be actor Thomas Jane, playing himself.
Jenkins demonstrates a remarkable aptitude for comedy which will hopefully lead to her tackling more in the future.
Jenkins deftly balances the intertwining plots while delivering an impressive number of jokes per minute. The episode introduces fan-favorite Ann (and her love of mayoneggs), brings back George Sr.’s infamous invention the Cornballer, and David Cross’ awkward Tobias spends most of the episode in blue paint as he pursues his dream of becoming a member of the Blue Man Group — a gag that became one of the show’s most iconic recurring bits. Jenkins demonstrates a remarkable aptitude for comedy which will hopefully lead to her tackling more in the future.

Wonder Woman (2017)
Patty Jenkins’s Superhero Epic Breathed Life Into The DCEU And Became A Cultural Phenomenon
It’s hard to imagine now, but leading up to its release, many fans were very skeptical that Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman would deliver the goods and do justice to the beloved character. While 2013’s Man of Steel and 2016’s Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice had their large fan bases, their receptions were decidedly mixed. And even though 2016’s Suicide Squad performed well financially, most agreed it was a mess. But Patty Jenkins defied expectations and delivered one of the most exciting and heartfelt superhero films of all time.

The story of Diana, the Amazonian princess who meets a young WW1 pilot after he crash-lands on her island, resonated with audiences worldwide and was met with universal acclaim. Part war epic, part love story, part fish-out-of-water fantasy, Wonder Woman shouldn’t work as well as it does. Yet, through Jenkins’ assured direction and Gal Gadot’s career-defining performance, all the elements come together to create one of the most purely entertaining superhero movies since the genre’s resurgence in the 2000s.

Monster (2003)
Patty Jenkins Makes An Incredible Debut With This Oscar-winning Serial Killer Thriller
Patty Jenkins made her directorial debut with 2003’s astonishing true-crime thriller Monster, and it remains her greatest achievement. Charlie Theron won a well-deserved Oscar for her portrayal of Aileen Wuornos, a sex worker who murdered seven of her clients in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Roger Ebert hailed Theron’s performance as “one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema.” The film was not only a critical sensation but also a box office success, grossing $58.5 million on an $8 million budget (via Box Office Mojo).
What makes Monster such a defining film in the serial killer genre is its ability to humanize Aileen Wuornos. While many films sensationalize the killer or their crimes, Monster is more interested in exploring the events that led Wuornos to become a murderer. The film is intimate, honest, and offers empathy towards Wuornos, without excusing her actions. Adding depth to the story is the tender romance between Aileen and Selby Hall (Christina Ricci) which brings unexpected heart to the film and cotrasts poignantly with the film’s gritty themes.
But it’s Theron’s mesmerizing performance and extraordinary transformation that elevates Monster to another level. Patty Jenkins took a big risk casting Theron, who had enjoyed moderate success in films like The Devil’s Advocate and The Italian Job but had yet to land a role that showcased the full scope of her talent until Monster, which remains the defining work in both of their careers.
