Horizon Forbidden West Overview

Horizon Forbidden West, an action role-playing game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, is set in a post-apocalyptic version of the Western United States. It takes place after an extinction event caused by a rogue robot swarm. Players can explore the open world, complete quests, and engage in combat using ranged and melee weapons against hostile machine creatures.

Released on February 18, 2022, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Horizon Forbidden West received praise for its visuals, combat mechanics, vocal performances, and technical advancements. However, opinions were mixed regarding the writing and open-world design. By April 2023, the game had sold over 8.4 million units. An expansion called Burning Shores was exclusively released on April 19, 2023, for the PlayStation 5 version.

Development of Horizon Forbidden West began in 2018, a year after its predecessor, Horizon Zero Dawn, was released. Mathijs de Jonge served as the director, with Benjamin McCaw as the narrative director. The game features an original score composed by Joris de Man, The Flight (Joe Henson and Alexis Smith), Niels van de Leest, and Oleksa Lozowchuk. The voice cast includes Ashly Burch, Lance Reddick, John Hopkins, Angela Bassett, and Carrie-Anne Moss. Motion capture was used to bring Aloy’s movements to life through Peggy Vrijens.

Taking advantage of the PlayStation 5’s enhanced processing power, custom solid-state drive storage, Tempest Engine, and DualSense controller, Horizon Forbidden West offers advanced haptic feedback, 3D spatial audio, improved lighting, special water rendering, enhanced visual effects, and reduced loading times. The PlayStation 5 version includes an optional “performance mode” for 60 frames per second gameplay with a lower base resolution. The game utilizes an updated version of the Decima engine that supports high dynamic range.

Horizon Forbidden West was announced during Sony’s PlayStation 5 reveal event in June 2020, with an initially planned release in 2021. A 14-minute gameplay demo for the PlayStation 5 version was showcased by Guerrilla Games during Sony’s State of Play presentation on May 27, 2021. The game faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a release date shift to February 18, 2022. On January 27, 2022, Guerrilla Games announced that the game had “gone gold,” indicating readiness for physical production.

Players who own the PlayStation 4 version of the game have the option to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version at no additional cost. The PlayStation 4 version comes on two Blu-ray discs totaling 97 GB, while the PlayStation 5 version comes on one Ultra HD Blu-ray disc with a size of 98 GB.

In addition to the game, a comic book series set after the events of the first game was published by Titan Comics on August 5, 2020. Guerilla Games also released an extended play (EP) titled The Isle of Spires, consisting of four tracks, on June 3, 2021. Furthermore, Argentine singer Nathy Peluso released the electronic single “Emergencia” on February 16, 2022, which was inspired by the game. Peluso portrayed the character Aloy in the music video.

At The Game Awards 2022, a downloadable expansion called Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores was announced. It was released exclusively for the PlayStation 5 on April 19, 2023.

Horizon Forbidden West Plot

In the six months following the defeat of HADES in Horizon Zero Dawn, Aloy has been searching fruitlessly for a working backup of GAIA to restore the planet’s rapidly degrading biosphere. She discovers that her former associate Sylens did not destroy but stole HADES. Sylens contacts Aloy and asks her to continue her search in the region known as the Forbidden West.

Aloy, accompanied by her friend Varl, ventures into the Forbidden West to find the ruling Tenakth tribe amidst a civil war between Chief Hekarro and the rebel leader Regalla. During her search, Aloy tracks Sylens to a facility where she finds HADES badly damaged and permanently deletes it. She manages to recover a GAIA backup without its subsystems but is interrupted by a group of futuristic humans led by their leader Gerard, who possess advanced technology making them invulnerable. They take a second GAIA backup while Aloy narrowly escapes.

Zo, a member of the nearby Utaru tribe, guides Aloy to a control center where she reunites GAIA with her subsystem MINERVA. GAIA reveals the locations of the other missing subsystems—AETHER, DEMETER, and POSEIDON—and advises Aloy to retrieve them before attempting to capture the more advanced HEPHAESTUS. GAIA also reveals that the extinction signal that triggered HADES and mutated the subsystems originated from the Sirius system, leading Aloy to suspect that the futuristic humans sent it.

Beta, a clone of Sobeck, who is part of Gerard’s group, reveals that they are the Far Zenith organization, billionaire colonists who fled Earth during its global extinction and have returned to use GAIA for their own recolonization. They have already acquired several subsystems but Beta has stolen their GAIA backup.

Aloy embarks on a quest to recover the missing subsystems. She helps Chief Hekarro advance in the civil war and recovers the AETHER subsystem. She retrieves the POSEIDON subsystem from the ruins of Las Vegas and then journeys to California, where she encounters the Quen tribe trying to solve ecological crises in their homeland. Aloy aids the Quen tribe member Alva in acquiring data while recovering the DEMETER subsystem.

Aloy obtains a high-level clearance from the mutated Ted Faro’s private bunker in the ruins of San Francisco. In an attempt to trap HEPHAESTUS, Aloy assists GAIA but is attacked by the Zeniths. Varl is killed by Erik, and Beta is recaptured, but Tilda, a member of Gerard’s group, double-crosses them and aids Aloy in escaping.

Tilda reveals that she was romantically involved with Elisabet Sobeck, the creator of GAIA, and regrets leaving her. Inspired by Aloy, she seeks to stop Far Zenith. Tilda also reveals that Sylens has been supporting the Tenakth rebels to use them against the Zeniths. Aloy refuses to sacrifice the Tenakth and defeats Regalla herself after foiling Regalla’s final attack on Hekarro.

Aloy, along with her remaining companions, launches an assault on Far Zenith’s base. Beta releases HEPHAESTUS into the Zeniths’ network, creating a massive army of machines that engage Far Zenith’s drones. Sylens disables the Zeniths’ personal defenses, allowing Aloy and Zo to kill Erik, while Tilda kills Gerard. Aloy and Beta learn that the Far Zenith colony was destroyed by Nemesis, a failed mind-uploading experiment created by the Zeniths. The Zeniths fled from Nemesis and sought to steal GAIA to colonize a new planet.

Nemesis also sent the extinction signal to Earth and is now on its way to destroy the planet. Tilda tries to convince Aloy to abandon Earth with her, but Aloy refuses and is forced to kill Tilda. Sylens, who had initially planned to escape Earth, has a change of heart and decides to aid Aloy in the fight against Nemesis. Aloy’s companions disperse to spread the warning about Nemesis, while Aloy and Beta reactivate GAIA.

In the “Burning Shores” downloadable content, sometime after defeating Far Zenith, Sylens informs Aloy that one Zenith member, Walter Londra, remains unaccounted for. Londra is believed to be hiding in the Burning Shores, the former site of Los Angeles. Aloy meets Seyka, a member of the Quen tribe, who agrees to guide her to Londra’s hideout in exchange for help in disabling a Zenith defense tower. Aloy accompanies Seyka to her settlement, Fleet’s End, where her fleet got stranded after being shipwrecked on the Burning Shores. Seyka has discovered a clue indicating that some of the missing crew members are located at Starlight Rise.

Aloy and Seyka destroy the defense tower and make their way to Starlight Rise, where they find signs that Londra has captured the missing Quen crew and is forcing them to excavate his old headquarters. They follow Londra’s trail to the wreckage of a Horus war machine near the Hollywood Sign. Aloy and Seyka come across a Quen camp where they discover that the missing crew willingly joined Londra, who they worship as a god promising them “Ascension.”

They infiltrate Londra’s Ascension Hall and learn that he plans to use Horus to build a rocket and escape the planet. However, using the experimental nuclear booster engines salvaged from Starlight Rise would irradiate the Burning Shore and its surrounding lands. Aloy and Seyka eliminate Londra’s henchman Zeth and discover that he has taken a small group of loyal Quen, including Seyka’s sister, to an abandoned amusement park for their journey.

Aloy and Seyka infiltrate the park and make contact with Nova, Londra’s personal AI. Nova explains that Londra is using the Mutiny Suppression Protocol to brainwash the Quen into becoming his loyal followers. Nova deactivates Londra’s security measures and requests Aloy to delete her. Aloy and Seyka enter Londra’s inner sanctum, where they find him about to seduce Seyka’s sister.

Seyka intervenes, forcing Londra to flee to his bunker underneath the Hollywood Sign. Londra activates the Horus and attacks Aloy and Seyka, but they sabotage its cooling system to weaken it. They breach its hull and Aloy infiltrates the Horus, ultimately killing Londra.

Afterward, Aloy sends the data from Londra’s Focus to Sylens and helps the Quen in Fleet’s End establish contact with Alva to coordinate the reunion of their fleets. Aloy also has the option to pursue a romantic relationship with Seyka before they temporarily part ways. Upon returning to her base, Aloy meets with Sylens, who has decrypted some of Londra’s data, revealing a list of 21st-century companies developing experimental weaponry that may hold the key to defeating Nemesis.
